It is composed of poetic, powerfully symbolic short stories that grapple with basic issues: what is truth, love, freedom, justice, heaven and hell? What enobles or destroys relationships?I read and reread them then. And I still do. The language is of an older time, though easily understood and lovely. Glad to see this finally available in print.Highly recommended.

It was not the Little Leather Library edition as advertised. It was for a gift and I didn't have any time to send it back or I would have. False advertising.

A close friend of Charles Dickens' from their meeting in March 1851 until Dickens' death in June 1870, William "Wilkie" Collins was one of the best known, best loved, and, for a time, best paid of Victorian fiction writers. But after his death, his reputation declined as Dickens' bloomed. Now, Collins is being given more critical and popular attention than he has received for fifty years. Most of his books are in print, and all are now in e-text. He is studied widely; new film, television, and radio versions of some of his books have been made; and all of his letters have been published. However, there is still much to be discovered about this superstar of Victorian fiction.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Victorian Soap Opera By K. Wagner I read this book on my Kindle from the Wilkie Collins Collection. Its not one of his greatest but it is a fine book. A young man suffering from an emotional shock is being manipulated by 2 groups. The first group is made up of friends who want to see him married. The second group is headed by a Catholic priest who wants to see the young man converted and return the Abbey* property back to the Church. [*Lands which were taken from the Church by Henry the VIII in the 16th century and given to the young man's family.] The 2 groups working against each other make the book humorous in the beginning. It only turns tragic later on with a somewhat happy ending. It is one of Collin's shorter works and well worth reading. If this book was being written in modern times. A fictional cult would be created, but the Roman Catholic Church is useful for the plot because of its views on marriage and divorce.

20 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Victorian prejudice By Francine Smith This book contains tiresome characters in an anti-catholic setting. For a Wilkie Collins book, it is absolutely dreadful. Still, it is a Collins book, so at least it is well written. A man and woman marry. A Jesuit, out to get the man's property, breaks up the marriage and succeeds in making everyone miserable, including the reader. While I had heard of the prejudice against Jews and Catholics in Victorian England, it never hit home until I read this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Read and awesome characters By Verena Techie This book did not get great reviews and compared to his other books it perhaps was not as suspenseful and a little sad but I loved the characters and the interplay between marriage or religion, who would win and how sometimes religion can take advantage of people who are down on their luck and needing something and so can women for that matter! I also loved the ending. I am loving everything that Wilkie Collins writes and I wish I could have met him. His books will deal with topics that were taboo in his day and that's fun. (Like pregnancy out of wedlock or the sad state of marriage and inheritance laws for women.)

"Anne of the Island" is the third novel of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic "Anne of Green Gables" series. The red-haired orphan Anne Shirley has earned a second chance at college, at Redmond College in Nova Scotia. At eighteen, she has also grown into an attractive young woman, a fact noted by her male friends and acquaintences. However, Anne has her own very strong ideas about romance...Anne will attend Redmond with several friends from Avonlea and Queens Academy, including school chum Gilbert Blythe. Together with three girlfriends, including a new friend, the charming and contrary "Phil" Gordon, Anne sets up housekeeping in a perfect little cottage on the edge of campus, their home base for studies and an exciting new social whirl. And Avonlea is still be close enough for treasured holiday and vacation visits. At Redmond, Anne will find a connection to her long-dead parents. She will comfort a dying friend, and help a former student adjust to the passing of childhood. And, best of all from the reader's point of view, she will be the recipient of a series of marriage proposals, some funny, some hopelessly awkward, and at least two that will challenge Anne's cherished dreams of a romantic knight in shining armor.Montgomery wrings a great deal of drama, comedy and suspense out of Anne's romantic adventures. The big question, of course, is whether Anne will accept one of her suitors, and just who that will be. The suspense is good to the very last drop, and very highly recommended to her fans.

Published by MobileReference (mobi). There are no better short stories than those of Anton Chekov. He wrote characterizations that resonate across the years and across cultures. Chekov takes you deep into these people's lives and struggles so that the reader feels a very definite strong connection with these characters that populate pre-revolutionary Russia. Short on plot and yet each story is satisfying and memorable. Some are masterpieces of the short story form.Excellent translation and stories that you can read and enjoy again and again for years. You can't go wrong here.

He was born Abraham Stoker in 1847 at 15 Marino Crescent – then as now called "The Crescent" – in Fairview, a coastal suburb of Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Abraham Stoker and the feminist Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornely. Stoker was the third of seven children. Abraham and Charlotte were members of the Clontarf Church of Ireland parish and attended the parish church (St. John the Baptist located on Seafield Road West) with their children, who were both baptised there. Stoker was an invalid until he started school at the age of seven — when he made a complete and astounding recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, "I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years." After his recovery, he became a normal young man, even excelling as an athlete (he was named University Athlete) at Trinity College, Dublin (1864 – 70), from which he graduated with honours in mathematics. He was auditor of the College Historical Society and president of the University Philosophical Society, where his first paper was on "Sensationalism in Fiction and Society". In 1876, while employed as a civil servant in Dublin, Stoker wrote a non-fiction book (The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland, published 1879) and theatre reviews for The Dublin Mail, a newspaper partly owned by fellow horror writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu. His interest in theatre led to a lifelong friendship with the English actor Henry Irving. He also wrote stories, and in 1872 "The Crystal Cup" was published by the London Society, followed by "The Chain of Destiny" in four parts in The Shamrock. In 1878 Stoker married Florence Balcombe, a celebrated beauty whose former suitor was Oscar Wilde. The couple moved to London, where Stoker became business manager (at first as acting-manager) of Irving's Lyceum Theatre, a post he held for 27 years. The collaboration with Irving was very important for Stoker and through him he became involved in London's high society, where he met, among other notables, James McNeil Whistler, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the course of Irving's tours, Stoker got the chance to travel around the world. The Stokers had one son, Irving Noel, who was born on December 31, 1879. Bram Stoker died in 1912, and was cremated and his ashes placed in a display urn at Golders Green Crematorium. After Irving Noel Stoker's death in 1961, his ashes were added to that urn. The original plan had been to keep his parents' ashes together, but after Florence Stoker's death her ashes were scattered at the Gardens of Rest.

Well, I would, and wasting time reading a bad book would be something I'd regret... Not with this one.A longer book (for a freebie), with a bit of everything in it. Romance, action, drama, death, tragedy.Tells the story of Stephen, a girl (yes a girl) growing up in rural England in the 19th Century. A girl way ahead of her times, only daughter (her dad wanted a boy hence her name), who inherits a fortune. The Man tells the story of her and her two main love interests, and one of their adventures overseas. It also touches on good and bad times growing up, and Stephen's relationship with her aunt.Telling too much more would give a lot away of the plot but it is well written, though drags at times (but not often). Great character development, not only Stephen, but her best friend Harold and a lot of other characters, some who don't enter the story until well into the second half. Not the kind of story I would usually read, though I enjoyed it immensely after being recommended by a friend.4 - 4 1/2 stars

It starts out slow, but after a while became a major page turner. I found myself crying during parts of it! It is set in the very late 1800's and the story centers around a young woman who has a great ideas for her life; I liked her ideas and do well remember being frustrated with the "way things were" when I was the same age. Problems develop for her when she makes a decision in haste, and acts upon it. I was completely impressed her ability to recognize her error, and how she corrects it. Loved it! Would make an excellent film!

Worth The Read By Amazon Customer Chose this book to read for Halloween and instead of being a horror story like so much of Stoker's work, found it to be a sweet love story. The classics are one of the best ways to learn and understand how people in different eras interpreted life. Well worth the read especially for modern women who might need a check on their views. Worth the read!

Grammar was not the best and all of those heartfelt confessions of love regarding Deyon and Kay were a little over the top... The basic plot of the story was decent it had potential but it was just all over the place without any direction or focus.... Not really looking forward to part two unless the author gets it together and drives her story in One Direction...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hot,hot, hot By Angelface I loved this book. There are so many life lessons in this. First off, I would like to thank Krystle Yvette for writing such a true to life story.Kayy was a young lady that had her head together, she didn't care what people thought, she was vher own woman. Deyson and Kane were my favorite, they were hard, but had a lot of softness about them. Raymond and Chaz were to idiots, Raymond for lusting after his stepsister and trying to rape her. Chaz, I really had no clear understanding for his stupidity, beating women, then raping Kayy. This could be a real life story with all of the twists and turns.

Entering into the Realms of Faerie By Franklin Waters I have not written any reviews before but I felt that the works of George MacDonald deserved reviews to bring the works of this forgotten genius back to the light of day. Especially as you can get many of them for free on your kindle. It must first be understood that George MacDonald inspired such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien, W.H. Auden, Madeline L'Engle and E. Nesbit. C.S. Lewis regarded him as his master. "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." If you are a fan of these authors then you might want to seriously consider exploring the works of one who inspired them. Before I fully get into this review I want to say that you can download this great book from the Gutenberg Project for free instead of paying the fee that Amazon charges here. Call me cheap but I like the zero price tag which I feel is appropriate for most books whose copyright has expired. This is an awesome piece of work. Reading it I felt as if I had been placed into a trance and transported into the realms of Faerie. The protagonist wanders from place to place and through adventure through adventure in a manner that is seemingly aimless at first glance. Such an aimlessness though to me gives an illustration of how Faerie must feel and in truth such meanderings are rarely without purpose they are just rarely obvious. Upon reflection you will see that there is a purpose to the journey of the protagonist though even he may not realize it until the very end. The realms he wanders through are beautiful and terrible. The entire work stirs ones imagination. In this work more than any other I can see how and where MacDonald influenced Lewis and Tolkien. I would describe this work as dreamlike and magical. The only dislikes I have is that MacDonald often goes on and on for many pages with song and poetry. While I like songs and poetry the ones he uses did not hold my attention or interest. However this may not be the case for everyone. Like all of this authors works there are messages of morals, vices and virtues. As he was a Minister you should not be surprised that there is an underlying message in keeping with his religion. Some may not care for this but for me I find the authors touch with such things light and not unpleasant in the least. His philosophies seem to me to be quite deep and worthy of reflection regardless of your own religious beliefs.Altogether I found this book to not just be a great read but a trip into the Dreamlike realms of Faerie. In the future I shall use this book as my key to journey there again and be inspired by a true master in every since of the word.
