Review "Essential reading for Cuba-watchers who want to go beyond traditional social science research to appreciate the extraordinary cultural talents of Cubans."-Latin American Research Review "A vital and interesting anthology about contemporary Cuba."-Oscar Hijuelos, author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love "Looks at Cuban creativity from an integrated perspective, refusing to kneel before the painful and often arbitrary divisions that have split the voices of this passionate culture into forever separate bands. The results are magnificent. Read this book and get a long overdue understanding of contemporary Cuban literature and art."-Margaret Randall, author of Women in Cuba: Twenty Years Later "In order for memory to be recovered, there must be a community that remembers and tells the story...Bridges to Cuba displays a wealth of insights that leave the reader with a sense of having experienced firsthand the intricate web of thought and feeling that is Cuban life."-Latino Review of Books "Unquestionably one of the most suggestive and imaginative anthologies of Cuban voices published in English in recent years. By bringing together personal essays, poetry, fiction, historical writings, and art, this collection is able to illuminate both the Cuban diaspora and cultural and political debates on the island."-Arcadio Diaz-Quinones, Princeton University

About the Author Ruth Behar is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and the author of "Translated Woman: Crossing the Border with Esperanza's Story" (1993). Deborah Gordon is Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at Wichita State University.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Behar has given us an incredible gift By M. Cristina Grabiel Bridges to Cuba is a collection of art, poetry, personal essays, and fiction written by Cubans on both sides of the straits of Florida. A magnificent attempt to bring together all who are Cuban by birth, to share the complexities of what it has been like to be separated these many years. The submissions in this book capture magnificently the diversity of experiences, thoughts, emotions and conflicts caused by the separation of Cubans from each other, and for many, from the land of their birth. Having been born in Cuba and having lived in the U.S. for the last forty years, the contributions in this book spoke personally to me in a way that nothing I have ever read before has done. But the beauty of this book and the gift Behar has given, is to present the challenges and emotional depth of separation that all us feel in our lives. Each contribution gives us a different perspective, a unique view of the subject, and a deeper understanding of what it is like to be separated from that and those which we love.Ruth, thank you.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Relevant and Revealing By kubanna It has been over ten years already since this anthology was first published, but the writings, photos, art, and interviews contained within it are still as stimulating, inspiring and necessary as when Behar's beautifully edited book first came out. Despite what was hoped for in the mid-90's, relations between Cuba and the United States have worsened and it seems that the possibility for dialogue between the two countries has narrowed even further. But at least we have the dialogue that Behar has so elegantly revealed in this volume.Bridges to Cuba presents a diversity of perspectives in an attempt to piece back together the fragments of what politics and exile have divided. An excellent interview with poet Nancy Morejon succinctly summarizes this project. Morejon says, "the miracle that we could hold a conversation. That we could confront each other. Without imposing exile as a precondition, and without us imposing the precondition of being revolutionary islanders... it was only through [Cuban] culture that we could establish those links, recognize each other" (134).The conversations are physical, between Cubans on the island and exiled Cubans, as well as intertextual. Fundamentally, however, this book converses with the reader, challenging his or her notions of the Cuba that resides in the popular imagination. Until the embargo is lifted, this book is the closest the average American reader can get to Cuba.

It was after 80% of the book before Cass found out that her prince charming was really a frog . The author made Cass look real stupid the entire book. I looked at some of the other books that this author has written and all of her stories are the same . I hope that Fire is what Cass needs . I'm sorry but this is the last book I will be purchasing from this author .

I like Fire and his background story as well as the fact that the author including characters from her past books. I didn't like that sometimes one characters' point of view would go on and on before the last characterS' could finish. That can sometimes get confusing and frustrating, making you want to skip pages to figure out what is going on. There was some similarity to the book Wife of A Legend where the plot and storyline can seem the same as far as the main character loving someone who has beef with their family. Nonetheless I can't wait for part 2 because I'd really like to see where this story goes. I hope the author mixes it up and doesn't make it predictable or like the other series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I think that like many of us I looked at the cover and ... By W. Michelle Davis First I must start off by saying I owe this author a HUGE apology. I have had this book in my to-be-read list for a minute now and just kept skipping over it for one reason or another. Last night I decided that I was going to go through my list of books that were in my to be read folder on my kindle and this was the first one to pop up. As I began my ritual of getting my coke and popcorn together to settle down into what I hoped was going to be an OK read, I became so engrossed in the book that i knocked my bowl of popcorn over NOT once but TWICE!!! Instead of the OK read I was anticipating I was completely and utterly surprised to happen upon a book that was not just merely OK but a masterpiece in the making!!! I think that like many of us I looked at the cover and because it wasn't as aesthetically pleasing to my eye I just figured that the words wouldn't keep me engaged. OK enough about me an my erroneous conclusions!!! This book was excellent from beginning to end. The characters in the book seemingly were your typical girls that you might read about in any other urban fiction novel, however Ms. Swint took her creativity to another level by adding an additional twist. Camille, Naomi, and Tamara all were well rounded fully fleshed out characters. Upon meeting Tamara for the first time, I was endeared to her simply because of her sweet nature. In today's day and age of everyone wanting to be the "baddest bih" and turning up to 1000, she had her head on straight, was working a part-time job and going to school full-time. While I was a little disappointed that she didn't stand her ground and demand that David fixed his issues on the home front before deciding to go all in, I understand it. Every woman understands that feeling of logically knowing that you should make a certain decision but allowing your emotion and heart to override that. Call it women's intuition or whatever but Camille struck me wrong from the very beginning. She never came across as genuine and always seemed to have an ulterior motive. My inner gut feeling was proven as I continued to read the story. Naomi, Naomi, Naomi, what I can I say other than she had me completely snowed!!! I had absolutely NO idea that she was going to turn out to be the way that she was. Now let's get to these men. David, Luke, Chop, Jaron, and Stephen. With all of his messiness, his baggage, and awful pride I still liked David. I know that he was wrong the way he went about pursuing Tamara but I could also tell that he had genuine feelings for her and wanted to do the right thing by her. Luke was just an enigma that caused my eyebrows to continuously raise. I like him I don't think he is as smart as David but that in no way means that he isn't on top of things. I am anxious to see if he has a clue about Naomi and her deceitfulness I think that revelation is going to be exciting to see unfold. Chop and Jaron were your typical BOYS trying to play a Man's game!!! Jealousy, envy, and disloyalty seemed to be the life's blood that pumped through their bodies. I was glad to see one piece of the puzzle put to sleep permanently but I am very anxious to see what role Stephen is actually playing and how everything will eventually come to a head. This is my first read by Ms. Swint but it definitely will not be my last. She clearly has the talent to write an intriguing tale that leaves the reader anxiously awaiting what twist, turn, or new surprise we may encounter next!! Kudos Ms. Swint Job EXTREMELY Well DONE!!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. How does the title connect to the story? By Kay The author clearly has talent and knows how to paint a picture. Unfortunately, the cliffhanger ending was not necessary. I think this would have worked as a stand alone. I understand the reason why it's done, but with cliffhangers you run the risk of losing readers. Because,we forget about the book. Unless there is a girl or guy in love with their partner's best friend in book 2, I don't get how the title connects to the story. The story unfortunately drug along without enough movement. I'm hoping I don't forget about it by the time part 2 comes around because i'm interested as to how she will wrap it all up.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great read! By Pamela Johnston Ward This was a great read and the authors debut book. There's twists and turns with the turn of each page. Just when you think that you have things all figured out, something else comes to light. I really enjoyed the storyline from beginning to end. It was full of twists, turns, and snakes in the grass. It just goes to show you that the one that you think is for you, is actually out to get you instead. I was not prepared for that ending, and I can't wait until part 2 to find out what's going to happen.

The Black Dwarf is set in the immediate aftermath of the Union between England and Scotland in 1707. The political action is centred on the first uprising to be attempted by Jacobites after the Union, the aborted landing of the exiled James Francis Edward Stuart and a large French fleet in March 1708. The dwarf of the title is Sir Edward Mauley, who, in his youth, has embraced the quarrel of his friend and kinsman Richard Vere, killing his rival the Laird of Earnscliff. While imprisoned for manslaughter, he learns that Vere has betrayed him by marrying his intended bride. How does the dwarf plan to take vengeance?

Patrick Killough Sir Walter Scott's short novel of 1816, THE BLACK DWARF, begins by presenting the back side of a tapestry: colors dull, patterns obscure. Mysterious, too, but not without clues leading from one isolated insight to another. Only at novel's end is the tapestry turned and all piercingly revealed.Let's look at the mysteries as they appear to the principal female of the BLACK DWARF, beautiful teen-age Miss Isabella Vere of Ellieslaw Castle. What does she know of herself and her family? Her long dead mother is buried in the castle's chapel in a tomb of Italianate beauty (Ch. 17). Her wealthy, stern father is a political schemer, aiming to become more powerful to restore the male line of the Stuarts. To that end he is pressuring Isabella to wed the odious Jacobite, Sir Frederick Langley. Yet Isabella herself is fonder of a young nobleman named Earnscliff. She is being visited by two cousins, Nancy and Lucy Ilderton. Lucy in particular knows that Isabella hates the one and loves the other. There is also some dark but hushed up ancient stain on Isabella's father's honor; he was almost killed in a brawl when his best friend, Sir Edward Mauley, saved his life by slaying his opponent. After a year's imprisonment for manslaughter, Sir Edward disappeared. Meanwhile Isabella's father had married Isabella's mother, a kinswoman of Sir Edward.Isabella unknowingly meets her destiny one day in 1707 riding in the wilds of Scotland near the English border with her two cousins. They come upon a tiny hut recently constructed on Mucklestane Moor. They had heard that it was built by a strong but hideous misanthropic dwarf who calls himself Elshender the Recluse. In the few months he has been there, despite his constantly invoking the deserved doom of the entire human race, he has done much grudgingly offered good to the local people by way of healing and advice. From them he has earned from the names Canny Elshie and the Wise Wight of Mucklestane Moor (Ch. 5).The dwarf dismisses with sarcasm the cousins after Lucy offers to pay to have her fortune told. But Elshender detains Miss Vere, whom he calls Isabel. He has known her parents.Does he also know her, Isabella asks. "Yes; this is the first time you have crossed my waking eyes, but I have seen you in my dreams." He added that he was no common fortune-teller but knew that her life was beset with real and potential evils. These included "unsuccessful love, crossed affections, the gloom of a convent, or an odious alliance." Her sad situation combined with her kind words to him made the ugly little man shed a rare tear. Those tears had been a good deed done to him by her. The dwarf rewarded her with a rose from his garden and the promise that if ever she needed him, she should deliver to him in person that rose or one of its petals.Who is this Wise Wight of Mucklestane Moor? Why does he except Isabella Vere from his general self-pitying loathing of the human race. It would spoil the ending to provide more clues. Suffice it to say that THE BLACK DWARF is a masterly study of what happens when a deformed but sensitive, generous young nobleman is betrayed by fiancee and best friend, loses his mind, partially recovers it and is caught up in a planned rebellion of Scots against Queen Anne and the recently created United Kingdom. -OOO-

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Read for Today By R. Lee What a pity that young people and some adults can't go back to the Classics for novels such as Sir Walter Scott's "The Black Dwarf."Slightly difficult to become involved in but after the first two chapters it starts to become exciting.Better than "Dungeons and Dragons" but not as good as "Ivanhoe" yet with some imagination it is very engaging.Scott is a master of description and forces the reader to get into his English syntax which is not familiar to Americans. When I read one of today's popular novels I feel as if a 15 year old wrote it.Definitely recommend this book!!!!!!!!!Also any of Walter Scotts other novels.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not your typical Walter Scott story By Edward Hetzler Many of the characters speak in dialect. This makes the Black Dwarf challenging to read. It also requires familiarity with 18th century English / Scottish history to understand what motivates some of the characters. The story is slow to start, but once you get past the beginning it moves along at a good pace. The plot is thin for a romance novel and revolves around hidden identities and misunderstandings. It is more like a Jane Austen story then a Walter Scott story. This is a great book for learning to use the power of the Kindle to define words and look up background information.

A man torn between two continents finds himself in a dangerous confrontation between tradition and corruption. Solo is a former cop who ran away from a dark past in France to start his life over again in Bamako, Mali, as a PI. An ordinary case turns out to be not so ordinary. The drug mule gets her throat slit. The French lawyer is too beautiful and too well-informed. The cocaine is too plentiful. This is classic hard-boiled noir with a modern twist set in Africa.

Review "Fans of classic hard-boiled PI fiction will relish Guillaume’s first book to be translated into English... He delivers a tale of high-level corruption that will resonate with James Ellroy readers.” ―PUBLISHERS WEEKLY STARRED REVIEW and Book of the Week"A thrill ride of epic proportions―the real deal! The perfect combination of street smarts and literary talent." ―Craig Johnson, NYT-bestselling author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries, a Netflix drama"This is crime fiction as hard-boiled as it gets. Guillaume, winner of literary prizes in France, is likely to win fans here, too." ―Booklist "West Africa is brought vividly to life in this enthralling, fast-paced noir." ―Foreword Reviews "A powerful novel with keys to understanding what is at play in Mali." ―Midi Libre "Guillaume displays remarkable knowledge about Mali and its underworld." ―Liberation "Guillaume's energetic writing offers readers a hard-boiled mystery set in a Sahel eaten away by corruption." ―Alibi Magazine"An intensely true-to-life mystery on steroids. It's raw, authentic and topical." ―Emotions Literary Blog "Guillaume's familiarity with the Mali government and community is evident in his vivid, unflinching portrayal of the novel’s setting and characters." ― Killer Nashville Book of the Day "No matter how gritty a hardboiled detective novel can be, it'll always get grittier in the Sahara." ―Book Page

About the Author After a successful career in law enforcement, Laurent Guillaume is now a full-time, award-winning crime fiction writer. He studied law, then served France, and graduated from the police academy a lieutenant. He started working urban crimes in the projects outside of Paris. His unit’s logo was a bat and the men called Batmen. They worked nights, in direct contact with dealers and drug addicts, thieves and vandals, traffickers and the down-and-out. His excellent physical and organizational skills led him abroad, on missions of international cooperation in Chad and North Africa. Back in France, he returned to his home region of Annecy for a calmer job. There, he discovered crime fiction and began reading the genre’s founding writers. Eager to be on the move again, he signed up to be an advisor to the police in Mali in 2007, where he specialized in fighting drug trafficking. It was in Mali he began to write. Two novels, two literary prizes and TV rights sold right off the bat, Guillaume returned to France in 2011 to work financial crimes in Annecy. In 2013, he left behind the red tape, judges and lawyers to write full time. He has seven published novels to date. White Leopard is the first to be translated into English.

The PI set on a case by a woman, and continuing on it to avenge a friend... it's like The Maltese Falcon, except there's no falcon, and I have a feeling that Sam Spade might take awhile to get up to speed in this modern world, where it's drugs people are after, not mysterious and legendary falcons.Solo, the PI, has cunning and guts, and is startlingly cool under pressure. Yet he's human, like everyone else in this drama, and he has his weaknesses. Beautiful women, girls without protectors, his friend and houseman, and a kid needing a job. Like most PIs, he's troubled, and running from (or just plain avoiding) a troubled past. He's also quick-witted, reminding me somewhat of Henry Kane's hero, Pete Chambers (just minus New York).Bringing noir to an African setting instead of a more typical US metropolis got me interested quickly, and Guillaume's compelling writing kept me reading. I am so glad Le French Book had this one translated. I hope they'll translate more from M. Guillaume in the near future, because I think I've found another favourite author. He’s escaped from France, leaving behind a murky past, to begin life afresh in Bamako, Mali. Here, living in his late father’s house, Solo work as a private investigator. Solo has learned a lot about how power works in Mali, how who you know and how much you pay can get results. He’s doing okay. But then he’s approached by Farah Tebessi, a Parisian lawyer to look into the arrest of her sister Bahia. Bahia has been arrested as a drug trafficker. She had 13 kilos of cocaine hidden in her luggage. Can Solo help? He’s been recommended to Ms Tebessi by his former boss.‘I have a saying: in Mali everything’s possible and nothing’s certain.’But freeing Bahia becomes the beginning of Solo Camara’s nightmare. There are plenty of people with an interest in protecting a drug empire, and murder is of no concern to them. But who is in control? Any possibility that Solo could walk away from this case is quickly removed: it’s become personal. And while Solo works on solving the case, we learn more about his past. About how he’s in the position he’s in, and why this case matters. This is a fast-paced story, with an abundance of bribery, death, sex and violence.I enjoyed it, and I hope Laurent Guillaume writes more novels featuring Solo Camara.Note: My thanks to NetGalley and Le French Book for an opportunity to read an advance copy of this novel.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

If you like thrillers set in |Bamako, in francophone Africa, with lots of sadistic violence; violence towards women (who taunt men with their power and appear to love rough sex); violence toward men; cocaine; money-laundering; and the kind of hero who benefits from good-guy corruption and somehow doesn't die of huge abdominal wounds; as well as lots--and lots--of bad guys buying Mali wholesale; is a damaged PI whose wife and son were murdered (we know not how); stereotyped characters; some nice scenery; and a certain complexity of plot, then you're probably a man who likes adventure and more than a bit of rough. The ending is tied up hugger mugger, and the beginning is never entirely clarified. Not as good as, say, Robert Wilson, but not as bad as some right-wing French thrillers.
