In this eloquent and atmospheric novel, Li Ang further cements her reputation as one of our most sophisticated contemporary Chinese-language writers. The Lost Garden moves along two parallel lines. In one, we relive the family saga of Zhu Yinghong, whose father, Zhu Zuyan, was a gentry intellectual imprisoned for dissent in the early days of Chiang Kai-shek’s rule. After his release, Zhu Zuyan literally walled himself in his Lotus Garden, which he rebuilt according to his own desires. Forever under suspicion, Zhu Zuyan indulged as much as he could in circumscribed pleasures, though they drained the family fortune. Eventually everything belonging to the household had to be sold, including the Lotus Garden. The second storyline picks up in modern-day Taipei as Zhu Yinghong meets Lin Xigeng, a real estate tycoon and playboy. Their cat-and-mouse courtship builds against the extravagant banquets and decadent entertainments of Taipei’s wealthy businessmen. Though the two ultimately marry, their high-styled romance dulls over time, forcing them on a quest to rediscover enchantment in the Lotus Garden. An expansive narrative rich with intimate detail, The Lost Garden is a moving portrait of the losses incurred as we struggle to hold on to our passions.

The Lost Garden: A Novel (Modern Chinese Literature from Taiwan), by Ang Li

Review

A beautifully written novel, from a prominent and prolific Taiwanese writer, including multiple themes of love, gender, sex, capitalism, as well as ethnic identity and Taiwan's historical and political memory. This expertly executed translation is long overdue.

(Yenna Wu, University of California, Riverside)

Encoded with an impressive array of tantalizing allegorical meanings, complete with a fantastical re-envisioning of Taiwan's local history and its ancestral ties with China, Li Ang's The Lost Garden has often been read as a political parable. Yet the novel boasts other arresting features as well, among them the author's daring treatment of female sexuality―taken here as the core of the relentless war between the sexes―in the mise en scène of a modish urban romance.

(Sung-Sheng Yvonne Chang, University of Texas at Austin)

This novel's dense sensuality―from its tropical flora to its frenetic lust―weaves time and space into mesmerizing patterns, like the looping paths of the title garden itself.

(Joseph Allen, author of Taipei: City of Displacements)

Stories of an old Chinese garden replanted with native Taiwanese species, a sultry island with a buried past, and liaisons between old money and nouveau riche hint at torrid energies and hidden traps in Taiwan's postwar past.

(Jeffrey Kinkley, author of Corruption and Realism in Late Socialist China: The Return of the Political Novel)

An exploration of contemporary Taiwan through the lens of the past, this novel hits many poignant notes as it threads its way.

(Kirkus Reviews)

The lush, descriptive narrative immerses the reader in the humid garden of the title that sits at the core of the novel, standing for history, desire, and family.

(World Literature Today)

Beautiful Reading By PIA I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. What a beautiful book!A story of falling terribly in love and then becoming disenchanted, it's also the story of the magnificent garden that surrounds Zhu Yinghong and her family. The book evolves around two different story lines: One regarding Yinghong's father, his political arrest and imprisonment and the return to his family home and the garden. The other takes place many years later, and regards Yinghong and her love affair with Lin Xigeng, a wealthy businessman. The book has a sad and poetic feeling, and it is written in a smooth, flowing prose. The translation is also very good and I can imagine it honors the original language.

Hamby Wonderfully written, this is a poignant novel of one person's journey through the joys and sorrows of navigating a relationship. What I found so engaging was that I never found the main character pitiable. Too often that can be the case as authors are too heavy handed in creating situations as this book poses. The other compelling aspect is the look at Taiwan itself, Its culture and the movement through time capture a world that provides an almost fantastic background balancing the events of the characters personal lives and the wonderful garden that provides an interesting and apt parallel,

I own ALL of Ms. Russ and she has NEVER disappointed. A book for a mature audience without brassy language. It is a pure love story where amends and forgiveness is achieved. Where do-overs are possible while recognizing mistakes were made by both parties. NEXT: BRING ON THE GEEKY NERD!!

Camille feeling as though she had no other choice did just that with Nathan. Destined is that sweet story where you root for redemption. You want the hero (Nathan) to be able to show how with time he was able to grow. He was able to recognize that success means nothing without your soul mate. Coalton was a great backdrop. The people and their since of community. Building the gap and supporting the decisions of Camille. It was a sweet novella that one can enjoy.
