“The moorland cottage” is a very moving and emotional story written by Elizabeth Gaskell in 1850. Mrs Browne and her children, Edward and Maggie, lives with their elderly servant, Nancy, in a cottage near the town of Combehurst. It’s no secret that Edward is their mother’s favourite child but while she dotes on her son, she never has a kind word for her daughter. In a big house nearby live the wealthy Mr Buxton and his gentle, loving wife. There are also two children in the Buxton household: their son, Frank, and their niece, Erminia. The Buxtons attempt to befriend the Brownes, but while they can all see the goodness in Maggie, they find it difficult to like the spoilt, selfish Edward and the cold, snobbish Mrs Browne. As the years go by and the lives of the Brownes become more and more entwined with their neighbours’, Maggie is forced to make a decision which could potentially affect the future of both families. The Moorland Cottage shows us the ways in which boys and girls were treated differently in Victorian society and I felt so sorry for Maggie.

By Savannah The Moorland Cottage is a predictable 19th century British romance (actually written in the 19th century) that follows the literary formula of its day. With that said, sometimes don't you just want to let yourself fall into a romantic novel and pretend it's your life? I don't know anything about the author, Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, so I don't know how successful she was, but she succeeded with this little novel. I fell in love, had my hopes dashed, and was rescued from a fate worse than death all in the space of a few hours. Gaskell is no Jane Austin, but Ms. Austen didn't write enough books to satisfy my thirst for a good romantic fairy tale written during a time when those books were the bestselling fiction of their day. If you're in the right frame of mind, pick it up and enjoy.

Another work of Mrs. Gaskell's that is well worth a read By 19th century brit lit fan If you enjoyed Cranford you will enjoy this sweet little novella. It is the story of Maggie Browne, a truly kind, sweet, and totally unselfish girl who has a brother, who is the complete opposite of her in personality.Although Maggie knows her brother for what he is,she still loves him, and I am sure you can imagine the conflict, sacrifice, and pain, Maggie will face because of her brother's selfishness.Maggie and her brother's relationship reminded me much of Molly and Cynthia's in "Wives and Daughters," another of Mrs. Gaskell's stories. Mrs. Gaskell never finshed "Wives and Daughters", and so we do not know for sure that Molly is rewarded with the love of the man she loves. However in in this novella, Maggie is eventually rewarded with the devotion of the man she loves, in spite of her brother.I understand this story will be woven into the new Cranford adaptation sequel. It has the caliber of Cranford, Mr. Harrison's Confession, and My Lady Ludlow, a good choice to be sure!

The writing made me like a few characters, loath a couple others and even cry a tear or two.... All was rolling along, I'm enjoying the storyline very much - until the last few chapters. The author took an odd turn in the storyline and then abruptly ended it. The turn of events is so strange I'm tempted to look as see if the upload of the public domain title has been tampered with. Is it a strange joke?I also have no idea why the story is called The Moorland Cottage. I expected the dwelling to take on some big significance in the story, but it didn't.Go ahead and skip this one. Instead I recommend The Enchanted April or Understood Betsy. This upload also had a handful of strange typos. I won't score it low for that reason but it could be easily fixed.

When Quail returns home from prison and tries to stay legit, he is offered an opportunity by his once protégé in the game. Kalanji sets his old mentor up with everything he needs to chase his dream of becoming a successful photographer. Their paths never conflict until Meda enters their lives. She too is chasing a dream, and stuck in a dilemma of which man can get her there the quickest. Gemina on the other hand, is not one to simply stand in the background, and will do whatever it takes to win the father of her child back. Witness 4 souls, caught up in the moment.

This story grabs you in and pulls you in. This is book 11 for this author and you can definitely see the growth in his writing. A few minor errors but, not important enough to take away from the story. This book tells the tails of LaQuail, Kalanji, Gemina, and Meda. A love rhombus. When a beautiful woman comes into play friendships will be questioned and love will be lost. Who is the the better man? Who is the better woman? When love distracts you who will be there to get you on track? Or will they just stab you in the back? I love this authors ability to write ping pong scenes and actually do them right! This is his best work hands down. If you want something with substance and actually has more to offer than the typical dope boy and hood rat girl. Then cop this joint right here! You won't be disappointed at ALL.

What a colorful love story penned with that original and poetic flare only Niles Manning can deliver. Meda is beautifully portrayed and handled with care, unlike most women of color in urban fiction. Light was cast on her well and as you can tell, she was my favorite. Four in the Moment takes you on a journey of love, betrayal, greed and ugly truths that can only be revealed when looking thru the lens of filtered eyes and hearts of resolution. I love the softness of this novel, the care and analogy Manning put into developing his characters like a photographer does when trying to get that perfect shot..in order to develop that perfect masterpiece. Finally, a real love story worth staying up until #4am.
