0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not Gaskell's best By Rilla Z As I read the story, I kept wondering if there had been a mistake: Was I really reading Elizabeth Gaskell's work? Had her book title accidentally been placed on some other novelette? (The title of the story only makes sense at the end.)Where most of Gaskell's plots utilize natural means to move the story, this one is anchored in the supernatural. There is a copious amount of backstory before the reader arrives at an explanation that employs no little amount of religious mysticism. I'd liken the story's resolution to a scene from Les Miserables for all of its pathos. I suppose it will please some readers, but I was disappointed.

In this tale it is written about curses, witchcraft, exorcism just to touch on the subject matter. I can't say it was one of her best works but it was unusual and interesting.

By Cassandra This is a sweet short story about a man worn out from a life of running a business that was passed on to him and that he never cared to run. Finally breaking free from that heavy chain, he discovers afresh the beauty and goodness of life. Throughout the story he struggles with self-condemnatory thoughts, and it is only through being drawn out of himself to help the people around him that he rises above his low self-image and comes to experience the joy, beauty, and value of self-giving love.I don't know anything of the background of this story or at which period of his writing career that Dickens wrote it, but it did not seem to have, I'm going to say, as "Dickensy" a flavor as his other works I've read. A Dickens fan, I think, would definitely still be able to pick out certain turns of phrase, themes, ideas, or literary ploys that are characteristic of Dickens, but on the whole, it seemed to be lacking something of the Dickens I am familiar with. Perhaps that is only because this is a short story, and it is the first of his short stories that I have read. Overall, it was an enjoyable short read and I definitely recommend it.

Thomas Hardy, OM, was an English author of the naturalist movement, although in several poems he displays elements of the previous romantic and enlightenment periods of literature, such as his facination with the supernatural. In the novel, Hardy chose to leave one of his protagonists, Knight, literally hanging off a cliff staring into the stony eyes of a trilobite embedded in the rock that has been dead for millions of years. This became the archetypal — and literal — cliff-hanger of Victorian prose.

Some good, Some boring By blake7521 This was a good collection of stories, while some take a while to ponder before you actually get the concept, and the sad part is, by that time the excitement of the story has worn off. However, that is only a fraction of the stories. Many of the others are just plain disturbing and terrifyingly real.

By Amazon Customer Jamaica's First Hero. Huareo is a historically based story centering around a man who became leader, or local Cacique of his people. There aren't many accounts of first contact from the perspective of the Taino. This story contrasts the pre and post contact world of the Taino beautifully. Kennedy captures an image of an Eden like Jamaica before the arrival of Germs and Steel. Most people assume the Taino disappeared entirely within a few decades of the first masted ships sailing into Discovery Bay, however, Kennedys account leads one to assume otherwise. The research and detail in this book is impeccable and will leave readers eagerly awaiting his next book. This story would translate remarkably well into a fantastic historical movie in the right Directors hands.
