Randall Grange has been tricked into admitting herself into a treatment center and she doesn’t know why. She’s not a party hound like the others in her therapy group―but then again, she knows she can’t live without pills or booze. Raised by an abusive father, a detached mother, and a loving aunt and uncle, Randall both loves and hates her life. She’s awkward and a misfit. Her parents introduced her to alcohol and tranquilizers at a young age, ensuring that her teenage years would be full of bad choices, and by the time she’s twenty-three years old, she’s a full-blown drug addict, well acquainted with the miraculous power chemicals have to cure just about any problem she could possibly have―and she’s in more trouble than she’s ever known was possible.

How to Grow an Addict: A Novel, by J.A. Wright

Review "Raw, honest, fascinating insight into the growing-up years of a girl raised by what might be an ordinary family with ordinary flaws, and the extraordinary effects their lives have on her. J.A. Wright makes Randall so real, you want to go round and pick her up, make her a decent meal and tell her she's going to be okay." - Michele A'Court, columnist at The Press, New Zealand Comedy Guild's  Comedienne of the Decade 2010 and author of Stuff I Forgot to Tell my Daughter "J. A. Wright's book is a compelling illustration of what fertile ground families are for nurturing addiction. It's not all doom and gloom however - the story is told in a clear-eyed, unsentimental voice which, for me, made it utterly convincing. It's captivating, heartrending and uplifting."- Morrin Rout, Former Literary Director of Chch Writers' Festival, Director of Hagley Writers' InstitutePortland Book Review - Feb 2016The review for How to Grow an Addict received 5 stars."J.A. Wright's How to Grow an Addict is a novelization about Randall, a young girl who is trying to navigate the testy waters of her family life and come out unscathed despite growing up in a house full of addicts and abusers. It reads like a memoir, a sort of "come clean" string of consciousness that chronicles her rise (or rather, fall) from a young girl to a young woman. The novel is literally what the title implies, a sort of explanation of a series of factors both genetic and environmental that lead to the rise of a small, precocious, and anxious child becoming a full blown addict. Randall has an abusive father and a mother who has a hard time defending her as it is clear that she's terrified of losing him (going so far as to get breast implants in a failed attempt to stop him from sleeping around). He behaves like he hates Randall, and she chews her fingernails to nubs as a result - and has a hard time functioning in a normal world without fidgeting.Randall is immensely likable, and though the reader begins to see her make a series of missteps as she gets older in an attempt to seek out love in "all the wrong places," the novel never takes on a judgmental tone. Randall is just a girl who's trying to navigate a very difficult situation that gets increasingly more difficult as life takes away some of her fiercest protectors and supporters. She is selfish, but only in a way that an addict is - someone who cannot see past their impulsive decisions into what the consequences may mean. It doesn't matter to her as she's just trying to get by in the only way she knows how. Her family resembles a million families, and some readers might even see some parallels between her family and their own in an alcoholic, abusive father who prioritizes a son above a daughter and creates another monster in the process; her brother who comes to hate her and lack empathy as much as her father does; her mother who is not perfect, but sad and unable to manage an angry and abusive husband, and who turns to anti-anxiety pills and alcohol as a way to cope. The novel ends with Randall beginning to accept help from those who have to foist it onto her and ends with an uplifting message: people can make a choice to recover and do the right thing. There may be mistakes and trip-ups in the process, but it's a process worth doing. This is a great book, and even if readers don't have first-hand experience with addicts or dysfunctional families, Randall feels real-life enough to turn to when it comes to trying to deal with real-life addiction. Readers should definitely give this one a shot."- Portland Book Review“Wright deftly and insightfully describes how a life can spiral toward addiction and rehab. The story is raw and touching and I found myself rooting for Randall as she navigates redemption and sobriety. A gritty and honest read.” —Susie Orman Schnall, award-winning author of On Grace and The Balance Project “Wright dares to stomp where others only lightly tread, and does so with grace, craft, and an unusual ease. This is not a sob story about abuse, damage, and addiction, it’s a story of how bravery, self-recognition, and the desire for happiness slap the former in the face and gleam with hope. A great read and lesson for anyone who’s been there, hopes to get elsewhere, or simply needs to read a story that resonates.” —Maria Kostaki, author of Pieces: A Novel

Wright’s novel, “ How to Grow an Addict”. The title grabbed me and the writing kept me reading. I didn’t want to put it down. It’s beautifully and descriptively written. The main character, Randall Grange is an intensely loveable girl, often in frighteningly circumstances, due to drugs and alcohol. The author engages the reader at depicting a believable progression of addiction.Randall has meaningful loving relationships with her Aunt Flo and Uncle Hank , and horrid ones with her brother and father, as well as other men in her life. Some scenes are heart-breaking to read, and yet when she gets to rehab, she writes and is away from her crazy life, a calmness comes. I was relieved her life found new meaning as we moved through the story.I miss Randall. I didn't want the book to end. As Wright makes very clear, at times with humour and at other times, in a very frank manner, that addiction starts one day at a time and so can recovery, and that life can change from a nightmare to one with endless possibilities.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The seeds of addiction are planted early By Connie Mayo How does a seven year old take the first step, and the next, on the path to drug and alcohol abuse? Randall Grange will tell you in her raw and authentic voice. Author J.A. Wright, with her 30 years of recovery under her belt, has the street cred to write this novel, and that makes it all the harder to witness the situations her protagonist faces - being handed tranquilizers by her mother, learning the hair-of-the-dog hangover cure from her father, tolerating sexual abuse from a boyfriend that supplies her pills. But that street cred also makes it compulsive read, the kind where you plan to stop at the end of the next chapter and then find yourself continuing on. How To Grow an Addict delivers on the promise of its title, telling us all the things that should never happen to a child.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. naive and doesn't understand adult situations like alcoholism and family struggles in general By Debi @2014 & Beyond My road to recovery did not resemble the walk of the main character of this book, a young girl named Randall Grange. How to Grow an Addict starts out with the main character entering rehab and being asked by her counselor what 'three things' led her to become an addict. As the title suggests, the book then begins to share the story of Randall's growing up and basically shares with readers exactly what caused Randall to be an addict, and ultimately, we go back to get a glimpse of the beginnings of her recovery as well. The author succeeds at sharing the voice of a child with much more honesty than expected. Randall is young, naive and doesn't understand adult situations like alcoholism and family struggles in general. She is desperate to be noticed and to be loved by her father and tries so hard to please him. At the same time, she feels feelings of hatred for him for his actions. She blames herself for the death of an uncle by marriage, only to discover many years later that he had a heart attack and his death was of no cause of hers. With no one explaining life to her, how could Randall think anything other than what her childish mind could imagine. While her father is an alcoholic, Randall's mother is also emotionally unavailable and is very fond of various pills to help her sleep and/or forget the pain of her own life. Randall learns early on that those pills will help her erase the pictures in her mind and she helps herself to her mother's pills with no consequences, thus entering into the beginning stages of her drug addiction. Randall's brother can do no wrong in everyone's eyes, except for the fact that no one sees him becoming exactly like his father, with a very mean spirit. We learn of Randall's bad choices and her dependency on men for love, and we read on as we watch her grow into a young woman who uses her body in exchange for pills. It was very realistic and painful and I could identify with portions of the story pertaining to the lack of self worth while I not in recovery too.I really felt that author did a great job with the characters and that they were very well written. They could actually be real people I that I have known or could know. It's not one of those "happily ever after" books, but it mixes great humor and honesty while sharing a very powerful portrayal of a dysfunctional family and one woman's harrowing journey through childhood and into rehab.I'm not sure if it's because I'm farther and farther away from my last drink/drug, or if I'm just a prude, but I did feel that the language and sexual content when Randall's addiction were in full force were a little too much for my liking. Overall, the book had a great story and a quick read, but I do think the book would have been just as good without being so explicit. That's just my opinion.I received a complimentary paperback copy of this book from the publishers and BookSparks in exchange for this post, which is my honest review and unbiased opinion.

By One Haute Mom ... if you are like me and read entire bodies of an author's work. This book was previously released (Nov 1, 2010) under a slightly different title (Impetuous Innocent), which is not mentioned in the book's description. You do get an additional story of the Accidental Princess, but really I wouldn't have ordered the slightly different book had I realized it was a re-release.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable stories By Sandy Milan +++Some minor spoilers+++Impetuous InnocentI preordered this book ages ago and didn't realise it was a re-release of an older book. I think it was first released in 1999. I for one really enjoyed the story because it was romantic and clean. I was surprised because like everyone else I'm more familiar with Ms Laurens' later books, which are known for their steaminess. The h first meets the H when she runs away from her villainous cousin, who is trying to force himself on her and into marriage. The H lives on a neighbouring estate and is known for being a rake. He quickly realises that she is an innocent and takes her off to stay with his sister in London and asks his sister to launch her into society. Later the H realises he is very attracted to the h and begins to court her but the h keeps thinking he has ulterior motives of one kind or another. If there is one thing annoying about the book it's the h's refusal to accept that the H truly cares for her and this goes on a bit too long for my liking. Otherwise I loved the story. The Accidental PrincessI'd read this story some time ago but I decided to reread it because it was years ago that I read it. The story isn't bad but there were things I wasn't crazy about. The H is a commoner and a soldier and well below the h's place in society. He rescues her when one of the h's suitors tries to compromise her. The h's parents don't accept him as a possible match because of his low birth and try to force her into marrying the suitor. When the suitor tries to force himself on her whilst 'proposing' to her, the H rescues her again. Meanwhile the H is on his way to Lohenberg (a fictional country) because the ambassador believes him to be related to the current king. The H is adamant he isn't related but slowly he begins to remember things from his very early childhood that perhaps confirm that he is. At one point the main characters pretend to be married to allow them to travel together on their own and the inevitable happens. It's a theme I'm not crazy about because neither of them consider that she might fall pregnant. Now the boot is on the other foot and the h believes she isn't good enough to marry royalty. I was intrigued enough to buy the rest of the books in the series.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Frustrating Read! By Read a lot:~) I was so frustrated with this book! The author seems to have a hard time putting a good plot together. Ms Laurens seems to have a plan in mind but then she gets "stuck" in that plan and never moves beyond it to more substance. She drags out a scenario chapter, after chapter, after chapter, making her characters seem stupid to the extreme! I mean really, her heroine is that innocent, that completely unable to believe she is desirable, and attractive enough for someone to love her for herself? Instead the heroine believes two old people she doesn't even know, and allows that to run her future!!! And the hero, a rake who is very "experienced", doesn't figure things out or try to figure things out for over half the book!!!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Intrigued. By Candy This was a good end to the Boss series. Kudos to the author for not allowing this story to drag out with making part 5's and 6's. Boss and Neicy's back in forth love was proof that they needed to get it together. Honestly, I half expected for Tez to spazz out in this one. The plan he was in on with her dad allowed me not to feel sorry for him. I hope Toshima learns the significance of loving yourself more than your significant other. Maybe then she'll find her happiness.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lovely ending! By Fancy I was very pleased with this read. Boss: Still Intrigued picked up where Intrigued by a Boss leaves off. Although Neicy is now engaged to Tez, she is still battling with her feelings for Boss, who may have to become a permanent fixture in their lives. More secrets are revealed and flirting here and there leave both Neicy and Boss, struggling with what’s right vs. what’s real. I also enjoyed seeing more develop with supporting characters such as Dee and Al, who we were able to learn more about in this installment.Danielle Marcus did a great job delivering this story. The storyline was great with excellent character development and consistent details and narratives throughout the entire read. I recommend Boss: Still Intrigued to any reader of urban fiction who enjoy a steady paced urban love drama. Although the author stated this story concludes this series, I would love to see a spin-off revolving Dee and Al, that also included updates on Toshi and Tez.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Boss: Still Intrigued By tani8604 Neicy and Boss had the most going on. I still felt bad for how Tez was being treated even though Don played a role in him and Neicy getting together. I liked Al and was glad he stopped settling for what Dee was taking him through without considering his feelings. Toshi was as thorough as they come but very underappreciated. I applauded her for trying to hold on to her marriage but realizing some things must come to an end. Once she took the initiative and decided enough was enough I was happy for her. I can't say I'm too thrilled with Neicy and Boss because they were being selfish in the beginning and staying in situations that could've been avoided had they kept it real. In the end it worked out for some and just in case Boss and Neicy pop up again, I hope she'll be able to say Boss didn't take her through the same thing he did with Toshi.

Bertrand Russell, a man generations ahead By Hal 9000 It amazes me that a book written at the turn of the 20th century could have so much modernity in it's critical thinking. Mr. Russell writes straight unadulterated English which will require no dictionaries or Thesauruses. I found it a good read - the kindle version looks as though it was scanned by a scanner and made into a book. I'm thinking that the book it not published anymore and nobody wants to republish it, but I could be wrong. There were some sections that were hard to read because of the aforementioned problem, but it was still worth the small change they charged- In my opinion- I should be considered a classic and required reading in high school, to say the least.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Still timely and thought-provoking after nearly 100 years By Nofyfb Azo I agree with Hal 9000. The most amazing thing about this book is that it's so timely after nearly 100 years. The problems Bertrand Russell described and analyzed in this essay, unfortunately still confound society in the 21st century. Reading it was like a kick in the head. Russell's writing is so clear and convincing that you can't help but wonder why so little progress (or, perhaps negative progress) has been made. If this doesn't make you think, nothing will.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. make several nice points, and make for a nice read By Cogitus An interesting essay, although rather dated and simplistic, in some ways almost child-like, by "modern" standards. It does, make several nice points, and make for a nice read. It's principal interest though, is the perspective it offers in two areas: (1) The environment, intellectual view, and concerns, regarding its title subjects ca. (post-WWI, largely pre-Soviet Era) 1922; (2) A century-long panorama of same for today's readers, say by comparing the pre-1922 synopsis of this book, the later 1960's, and the 2010's. Fascinating:Human nature and human follies change but little with time; like the SR-71 Blackbird, the "flight" of each new generation largely self-anneals them .... "Self-annealing Folly" : Only its expression "evolves".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a glimpse into a great mind By jackel88 I believe it is extremely hard to objectively criticize poetry and essays. They are so subjective to the individual according to their own personal preferences.Personally, I enjoyed reading Pope from the first time that I read him in school. I think anyone who likes poetry should read him. His satire is sublime. If for nothing else in this book, you must read "The Rape of the Lock".But poetry isn't the only thing in this book. You get some incite into his own ideas about poetry and his own take on life from the preface and the explanatory notes at the beginning of the book and his own notations. There is a lot to absorb in this book. Some readers may not be too keen to the language of the period. I've noticed that complaint from some readers of period pieces. Just keep that in mind. This is also an interesting take on the period of time that Pope lived in.I realize that someone else might not be so inclined to like his works, but since it is free, you can always delete it from your library.Highly recommended for the poetry lover and essay enthusiast. I know they will enjoy the book.

Poetical Works of Alexander Pope By Priscilla Ciccariello How can you know be impressed with a person who wrote a world of poetry in "heroic couplet"? Alexander Pope, elevated the already well-known heroic couplet into a 19th century standard by which to write. Loved his "Dunciads" - worth the price of the book. We're talking about a poetic form that is not much written in any more, but stands as a beacon of what can be done with meter, rhyme and structure. Love it. Timeless.

Praise for Esmahan Aykol:

"Kati could be the love child of Miss Marple and NPR's Andrei Codrescu. It doesn't matter who done it. What matters is that Aykol uses the genre to tell us more about the world than we're used to."—Newsday

"An offbeat amateur sleuth with a distinctive narrative voice. Fans of Amanda Cross's Kate Fansler and Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher will find a lot to like."—Publishers Weekly

Kati owns Istanbul's only mystery book store and, as usual, gets involved in a case that is none of her business. Every day, a beautiful woman lunches alone in the restaurant next to the bookstore. When the woman is found dead in her apartment, Kati immediately recognizes the stranger from the restaurant in images in the newspaper photos. Although the police believe it was an accident, Kati suspects something more sinister has happened.

Sani Ankaraligil was an attractive young woman and a politically active ecologist in the middle of a divorce from her wealthy husband. So who would benefit from her death? The industrial companies Sani had accused of polluting the rivers of western Turkey, or her jealous husband seeking revenge through an honor killing, or a Thracian separatist group? The investigation pulls Kati into murkier waters: the marriage may have been a sham, designed to cover up Sani's husband's homosexuality . . . the role of her mother-in-law goes from distasteful to outright criminal.

Review ‘The heroine could be the love child of Miss Marple and NPR’s Andrei Codrescu. It doesn’t matter much who done it. What matters is that Aykol uses the genre to tell us a little more about the world than we’re used to hearing from more commercial writers.’ Newsday‘Aykol makes her English-language debut with Hotel Bosphorus her first mystery featuring Kati Hirschel, an offbeat amateur sleuth with a distinctive narrative voice. Fans of such female detectives as Amanda Cross's Kate Fansler and Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher will find a lot to like.’ Publishers Weekly‘In Aykol’s impressive second Kati Hirschel mystery Baksheesh set in Istanbul (after 2011’s Hotel Bosphorus), Kati, a German expatriate “who loves reading detective stories and has a shop specializing… once again turns amateur sleuth with aplomb.’ Publishers Weekly‘When you want to be more than a pretty wife, you may have to go above and beyond the call of duty. With characters all around her putting the pressure on her, Kati Hirschel pushes herself to keep her independence, until her interest becomes her business in more than one way. Baksheesh is a strongly recommended pick for lovers of international mystery, highly recommended.’ MBR Bookwatch

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Kati's best friend and fellow amateur gumshoe have their share of ... By Melinda The mystery aspect was mild. The search for the culprit(s) is slow and as expected enlightening. The victim was a distant acquaintance of Kati's and as she peels back the layers and inner circle of this woman's life things become very interesting as secrets and possible motives are exposed. The drawn out narrative can drag a bit, however Kati's often brash personality keeps you entertained. Fofo, Kati's best friend and fellow amateur gumshoe have their share of witty repartee allowing for plenty of chuckles. Momentum ebbs and flows, other scenarios interrupt causing minuscule subplots.Kati Herschel possesses a strong personality. At times she grates on your nerves with her jagged edges, other times her edges are smooth and you appreciate her softer side. I have a better grasp of her by the end of the book, although the road was bumpy. Once you learn of her past, concerns, and there is enough presented, you understand this fiercely independent, strong woman much better. The fact Kati is the owner of the only crime/mystery book store in Istanbul is clever. She reads so much crime she's confident she can solve local crimes of merit, and she does. Kati is so adept at sleuthing she impresses the police, in fact they quasi consult her, adding to her over abundant level of confidence.Another interesting aspect I enjoyed, seeing Turkey through Kati's eyes. Kati is an expatriate from Germany, still adjusting to Turkish ways and people despite residing in Turkey for quite some time. Interesting to learn the intricacies of Turkey along with Kati as well as her comparisons of Germany vs. Turkey.Mild mystery filled with numerous and electric characters. A few surprises along the way to solving the murder. I was off base as to the culprit, which was welcomed. Not until the very very end did all the pieces come together. Kati and Fofo will entertain you both on and off the case. Given Turkish is a difficult language to translate I found the translation strong. I still wish I could read every language to fully experience each story in their original tongue. This is the third book in a series. I have not read the previous books, however it did not deter from my reading experience. This book is fine as a standalone, although bits and pieces of the previous books are scattered throughout the narrative gleaning enough insight into previous exploits protagonist has been involved in.
