The characters were well developed and complicated. The storyline draws you in and all you want to do is root for the Justin and Amira. It was good to read a story about a young couple trying to live according to God's principles and overcome the obstacles life throws that can sometimes get us off track. This is ultimately a story about trusting God's will for your life and not losing sight of who God is and what he can do.I hope this book blesses you as it has certainly blessed me

Such a powerful message about not only relationships but listening to the voice of God concerning your relationship. Wow the characters were very identifiable and I could just feel the emotions coming from each of them. I could not put this book down once I started reading. The emotions between the characters were felt through every page even when they went through their test and trials. I was going through the emotions with them. This book was not a disappointment and I am thankful that I ran across this book. Hopefully, this author will write more books like this.

PDF Ebook The Master of the Prado: A Novel, by Javier Sierra

New York Times bestselling author Javier Sierra takes you on a grand tour of the Prado museum in this historical novel that illuminates the fascinating mysteries behind European art—complete with gorgeous, full-color inserts of artwork by da Vinci, Boticelli, and other master artists.Presented as a fictionalized autobiography, The Master of Prado begins in Madrid in 1990, when Sierra encounters a mysterious stranger named Luis Fovel within the halls of the Prado. Fovel takes him on a whirlwind tour and promises to uncover startling secrets hidden in the museum’s masterpieces—secrets that open up a whole new world to Sierra. The enigmatic Fovel reveals how a variety of visions, prophesies, conspiracies, and even heresies inspired masters such as Raphael, Titian, Hieronymus Bosch, Botticelli, Brueghel, and El Greco. The secrets they concealed in their paintings are stunning enough to change the way we think about art, uncovering mysteries about historical facts, secret sects, and prophetical theories. It is these secrets that lead Sierra to question his entire understanding of art history and unearth groundbreaking discoveries about European art. At once a captivating novel and a beautifully illustrated reference guide to Madrid’s famed museum, The Master of the Prado is full of insights and intriguing mysteries. Sierra brings historical characters alive in this astounding narrative filled with dazzling surprises that will entrance you as much as the pictures within.

The Master of the Prado: A Novel, by Javier Sierra

Review Sierra is at once a great art historian and a greatwriter, and these two worlds merge and mesh in this wonderful book. Part guideto my favorite museum, part fictionalized autobiography, part dialogue on themysteries of the art world and part novel, the sum is prism refracting thelikes of Bosch, Velazquez, Titian and Raphael through the author’s ingeniouseye. (Dr. Noah Charney, bestselling author of The Art Thief and The Art of Forgery)“Sierra's triumph is to have forged a novel that instructs so easily and deliciously (yes, there are footnotes, but they're easily ignored if you're uninterested) you'll feel enriched however you read it. You may even be inspired to book tickets to Madrid. Just because we read something doesn't mean we're finished with it.” (NPR)

THE MASTER

Let me start at the beginning—in the beginning was the doubt. What if it had just been a ghost? People who know me are aware of my penchant for stories where the supernatural ends up deciding the ending. I’ve already written about these a lot, and am not likely to stop now. Here in the West we live in an increasingly materialistic society that tends to scorn the transcendent, but I don’t think it’s anything to be embarrassed about: Poe, Dickens, Bécquer, Cunqueiro, Valle-Inclán—all these writers fell under the spell of this fascination for the unknown. They all wrote about ghosts and tortured souls and the beyond, in the vague hope of being able to explain the here and now. In my case, as I grew up I left most of those stories behind, only holding onto the really important ones, the ones where the protagonists have actually played a role in shaping our civilization. When you consider these, the mysterious stops being just anecdote, and becomes vitally important. Which is why I’ve never hidden my interest in encounters between the great figures of history and these mysterious “visitors.” Angels, spirits, guides, daemons, genies, tulpas—it doesn’t matter what we call them. These are just various labels that we use to mask our ignorance of that “other side” that all cultures talk about. One day I will set down in writing what really happened when George Washington came across one of “them” at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777, during the campaign against the British that led to America’s independence. Or the account of Pope Pius XII, who was seen talking to an angel from another realm in the private gardens of the Vatican, according to more than one witness. Following the trail of events like these can lead us to the very origins of our written culture, and can also often bring us warnings about the future. Tacitus gives us a good example. In the first century, the illustrious Roman historian and politician wrote of the encounter that none other than Brutus—Caesar’s protégé and assassin—had with one of these intruders. The ghost foretold his ultimate defeat at Philippi, in Macedonia, and the warning drove him to such despair that he chose to throw himself on his sword rather than to live with his defeat. In most of these stories the visitors take a human form but also give off something invisible and powerful that marks them as different. Exactly like those “messengers” I wrote about in The Lost Angel. So who—or what—was the unexpected teacher who appeared to me in the Prado that day? Did I find him, or did he find me? Could he have been one of them? I can’t be sure. I do know, however, that my apparition was flesh and blood, and that he uttered the ancient Eastern proverb, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears,” then proceeded to introduce himself. “Dr. Luis Fovel,” he said, clasping my hand as if he didn’t want to let it go. He had a grave tone of voice and spoke with authority, while at the same time managing to respect the hush of our surroundings. “I’m Javier Sierra,” I replied, surprised. “You’re a doctor?” He arched his eyebrows then, as if my question had amused him. “In name only,” he replied. His tone revealed a hint of surprise, as if he hadn’t expected this young man to respond with a question. Which is perhaps why he then took control of the conversation, leaving a deathly coldness in the palm of my hand as he turned his eyes to the painting by Raphael that I’d been gazing at. “I couldn’t help noticing how you look at that painting, young man, and I’d like to ask you something. If you have no objections, of course.” “Go ahead,” I said, curious. “Tell me,” he went on, in a rather familiar tone, as if we’d met before, “why does it interest you so much? It’s not exactly the most famous painting in the museum.” Following his gaze, I cast another glance at The Pearl. I didn’t know much about the painting then, let alone how it had been esteemed by King Philip IV of Spain, the monarch with perhaps the most exquisite artistic taste in history. There are only four paintings in the Prado that come directly from Raphael’s hand, plus another few from his studio, and various copies from that era Out of all of them, this is without a doubt the best one. It shows the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth sitting in front of some ruins and tending two infants who, upon further examination, begin to look suspiciously similar—the same blond curls, the same chins and cheekbones. One of the infants, who has a subtle halo and is partly dressed in an animal skin, is John the Baptist. The other—the only figure in the painting without a halo—can only be the baby Jesus. St. Elizabeth, John the Baptist’s aging mother—who could also boast an immaculate conception—regards the children with a pensive expression, while the little Savior’s own attention appears to be caught by something or someone outside the frame of the painting. Not St. Joseph, Mary’s husband, who is in the background engaged in some activity impossible to divine. Whatever it is that the young Messiah is looking at is beyond the edges of the scene. “Why am I interested in this painting?” I exhaled loudly, taking a moment to weigh my reply. “Actually, Doctor, it’s pretty simple—I want to know what it means.” “Aha!” He lit up at this. “Isn’t it obvious? You’re looking at a religious scene, a painting that is meant to be prayed to. The Bishop of Bayeux commissioned this from the great Raphael Sanzio after he was already famous and working for the pope himself in Rome. The French bishop would have heard plenty about Raphael and his paintings of babies and virgins, and would have wanted one for his own devotional purposes.” “That’s it?” The doctor wrinkled his nose, as if my incredulity amused him. “No,” he replied, his voice switching to a low, conspiratorial tone. “Of course that’s not all. Usually in paintings from this period, nothing is what it seems. While you may at first think you are looking at a religious scene, in fact, there is something there that is decidedly unsettling.” “Yes, I can sort of feel it,” I admitted, “but I can’t put my finger on it.” “That’s how real art works, my boy. Paul Klee once said that ‘art doesn’t reproduce what we see—it makes us see.’ If art simply showed us what was there, it would be tedious, we’d tire of it, and in the end, we wouldn’t value it.” He paused. “Tell me, do you have a few minutes? I can show you exactly what it is that this extraordinary painting is doing.”

Buy the Prado's Official Museum Guide Instead By Deborah 2.5 starsI'm not sure what I was expecting from Javier Sierra's The Master of the Prado, but whatever it was, it certainly wasn't this. The Master of the Prado sounded, from the publisher's description, as if it were the literary equivalent of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, featuring a protagonist who discovers historical and supernatural mysteries hidden in plain sight in paintings by Old Masters. In The Master of the Prado, those artists include Raphael, Sandro Botticelli, Titian, Hieronymus Bosch, Brueghel the Elder, and El Greco, along with the lesser known Sebastiano del Piombo, Ambrogio Bergognone, Bernandino Luini, and Juan de Juanes. The book contains beautiful full-color reproductions of the works Sierra discusses with his enigmatic guide Dr. Fovel, which show up magnificently even on an e-reader. Unfortunately for a novel, however, the paintings are the highlight. The prose is pedantic - the visual analog of the stereotypical art history professor's drone in a darkened classroom; while I learned a couple of interesting things about Renaissance imagery, this is not why I pick up a novel.Sierra ably summarizes the entire 294-page book (excluding endnotes) in a single paragraph on page 184:"I now thought of [some of the paintings in the Prado] as tools built by extremely sensitive minds not at all concerned with achieving mere aesthetic pleasure. I'd begun to convince myself that the larger purpose behind these paintings - where their true meaning lay - had always been to keep open certain portals to the "other world." It was as if the art was simply keeping alive its original mystical mission dating back to the cave paintings in northern Spain some forty thousand years before. If Fovel was right, this was a secret that only those painters had known, perhaps along with some of their patrons. And now me."If that paragraph intrigues you, then by all means pick up a copy of The Master of the Prado; if not, the official museum guide published by the Prado is cheaper and can be purchased from its website.I received a free copy of The Master of the Prado through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A beautiful book By Bookreporter Imagine standing in Madrid’s Prado, one of the world’s greatest museums, before a huge painting by Raphael, just contemplating the masterpiece, when a man who has stood quietly next to you breaks the silence with a question that stuns you. He strikes up a conversation that, despite your better judgment, you cannot resist. The painting you have been admiring has hidden meaning, he says. Moreover, so do many others within these walls. Would you like to hear more? That is just what happened in 1990 to Javier Sierra in this “fictional memoir.” The man he met on a cold winter day in the Prado called himself Luis Fovel, and he promised to return again and again to reveal the secrets scattered throughout the galleries. True to his word, whenever Javier visited the Prado, somehow Fovel found him, appearing as if by magic. It so unnerved him that Javier laughingly wondered if the man was real or a ghost.A journalism student, Javier had school obligations, but as soon as he could complete them, he eagerly hurried off to meet with the Master, as he began to call Fovel. Also, as a healthy young man, he had a young lady friend, Marina, who he wished to become more than a friend. Luckily, many of her interests ran parallel with his. In fact, she nearly begged to be part of his newfound activities. Because of this, he took her into his confidence. Maybe they could work together on these discoveries, yet Javier remained reticent to introduce Marina to Fovel. Something kept him from sharing his Master with his girl. Maybe he didn’t want to lose either of them, or perhaps he wanted each to be his alone. Whatever the reason, he had to face the consequences of his decisions.Aside from the great artists who are the focus of the story, there are few main characters, but a sinister one does pop up: a man Javier dubs Mister X. He threatens Javier’s continued meetings with Fovel and even his relationship with Marina. What does Mister X fear that Javier might find out? There are fascinating secrets revealed and intriguing theories proposed about what some paintings might portray if one looks beyond the obvious. In the Master’s conversations with Javier, he expounds on symbolism and ideas about scenes and the magic they hold. A real treat for the reader is the full-color artwork peppered throughout the book, which is there in order to join Javier in his visual search for the answers to the teachings of the Master. There is no question that Sierra has a superb grasp of his subject. However, it felt a bit like a lesson that was trying to disguise itself as a mystery. The story thread at times seemed a bit thin. The long conversations with Fovel, while interesting for art historians or students of religious debates, dragged on somewhat for me as a fiction reader. More menace from Mister X and more interaction with Marina might have added to my reading pleasure. Still, the book is a beauty and the ideas abound, almost to the point of being overwhelming. Thus, if you are of the mind that you can’t have too much of a good thing, THE MASTER OF THE PRADO is for you.Reviewed by Kate Ayers

Poor-quality art history lectures, "sugar-coated" poorly By Owl in a Pine I was hoping for: at best, an Umberto Eco exploration of hidden knowledge and those who seek it, at worst, a Dan Brown hidden knowledge thriller. It was actually significantly worse than the DaVinci Code, which is a high bar of mediocrity to clear. The book is basically the author's pet theories about hidden symbology and meaning in ~8 famous paintings of The Prado, delivered essentially as lectures, glued together with the thinnest connective tissue of a plot. I actually would have enjoyed some straight-up art history (and the full-color plates of the paintings in my edition were lovely), but I had three major problems with this book's approach. First, there was no sense of scholarly context to any of these "secret interpretation" lectures so it was hard to learn what was generally accepted theory, what was a fringe theory, and what was completely the author's own invention. Second, the paintings weren't particularly thematically related, so they may have been linked by the concepts of "hidden meaning," but otherwise there was almost no thread between them, so each was a context-free lecture, which we all know, makes learning a challenge. This leads me to my last peeve, which is by far the biggest to me, personally. Each painting is introduced by a mysterious, erudite "Master" who lectures the narrator while the narrator gushes about how mind-blowing and fascinating it all is. Since the "Master" is basically an author stand-in (since the book is an excuse to lecture us on his pet theories), that makes the narrator the stand-in for the reader. So he has told us what to know, and also what to think about it all, namely that it's all incredibly fascinating!!! I don't much care for authors to straight-up tell me how to feel about information, especially when it's so thinly-disguised authorial lecturing. I got about 20 pages to the end and just put it aside in disgust. I can't think of a single book I've done that with.

Conner I agree with the review of TK below, but as for the ending leaving the reader "hanging", I know exactly what has happened. If one buys the Fredonia edition of the book, it comes in two volumes. For whatever reason, when searching the Amazon site and calling up the book, only volume one appears. It is possible to find volume two by typing in the ISBN number: 1589631714. After reading volume two, all those loose ends are tied up quite nicely and it makes it a very rewarding reading experience. The whole series of books in Dumas's Valois series: Queen Margot (Margaret de Valois), Chicot the Jester, and the two volumes of The Forty-Five Guardsmen are a wonderful story and deserve more attention.

Though "La Dame de Montsoreau" is my favorite of the series, the Forty-Five does not lack young, handsome and rich gentlemen and beautiful and graceful ladies, not to mention the private lifestyle (humorous I found) of the King Henri III and his brother the duc d'Alençon. It was overall just captivating, I felt like I was reliving this time period. Again, I suggest you read the whole series, especially since this is the last book in the series. But I prefer this 'Valois' series to the 'D'Artagnan' or 'Marie-Antoinette' etc. series... It's more fascinating for me. The only thing is, that the end leaves a little something to be desired. I don't know if Dumas meant to write a fourth book in the series, cuz he seems to leave a few things hanging. But if you can ignore that, the rest of the plot is great!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Beginning By shouldbestudying25 It was really thrilling to read the story of the beginning of the King's musketeers. Excellent translation, wonderful action and characters, Dumas did it again. highly recommended.

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was a Russian writer who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays. His two most famous works, the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are acknowledged as two of the greatest novels of all time and a pinnacle of realist fiction. Many consider Tolstoy to have been one of the world's greatest novelists. Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King

Tolstoy delves deeply into the mind of a near-perfect person who wants to be better, holier. When Father Sergius cannot figure out how to serve God if he's busy serving people he comes to a life's crossroad.Very timely in 2015 as we examine our ethical position and our collective courage in matters of conscience. A delightful discussion tool

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. classic By nebnilknarf2000 Thought this was a classic from the first time i read it. This was the first book i read from the author Leo Tolstoy and must admit that I am in awe of his genius and brilliance.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another brilliant Tolstoy tale By Israel Drazin Stepan Kasatsky was a prideful, handsome and intelligent man who wanted to excel in whatever he undertook. He was very persistent and always successful. When, while in the army, he decided to rise high in rank, he succeeded. When he wanted to enter the top levels of society by marrying a princess, she accepted him. But then she told him that she had been the mistress of the emperor and his pride forced him abandon her and the military and leave to become a priest and assume the name Father Sergius.Tolstoy tells the tale of his priesthood, how he rose to higher and higher positions, but while he had pride and was driven by it, he had no faith and was constantly bothered by sexual temptations. Once, when a young woman tried to seduce him, he avoided the temptation by a horrible disfiguring act of "piety" that saved him and caused the girl to enter a nunnery. Soon, as could be expected with all his successes, he became a famous hermit known for the healing powers of his prayers. But, although he excelled in pride and in rank, Father Sergius was a failure, as Tolstoy reveals in his novel's ending when Sergius meets a woman who the world considered a failure. Thus, this short novel is another example where Tolstoy shows the nobility of the Russian peasants.Readers may want to ponder this last point. Elizabeth Kolbert has an excellent article in the March 22, 2010 The New Yorker, pages 72-74, in which she reports many scientific studies showing that acquiring success, such as winning a lottery or securing a higher paid job, does not increase happiness. In fact, these people are less happy than those who do not win or are not promoted.

Review QUOTES:"Superior to any other Uncle Vanya I've read or seen... Baker practices astonishing verbal magic over and over again." - Clancy Martin, Paris Review"Strikingly intimate... Free of the stilted or formal locutions that clutter up some of the more antique-sounding translations... Napoléon le Petit (literally, "Napoleon the Little") was an influential political pamphlet by Victor Hugo which condemned the reign of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French. Hugo lived in exile in Guernsey for most of Napoleon III's reign, and his criticism of the monarch was significant as he was one of the most prominent Frenchmen of the time, and was revered by many. It includes the concept of two and two make five as a denial of truth by authority, a notion later used by George Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-Four Victor Marie Hugo was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the acclaimed novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831 (known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). He also produced more than 4,000 drawings, which have since been admired for their beauty, and earned widespread respect as a campaigner for social causes such as the abolition of the death penalty. Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed, and he became a passionate supporter of republicanism; his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and artistic trends of his time. He was buried in the Panthéon. His legacy has been honoured in many ways, including his portrait being placed on francs.

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: French

About the Author The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo s literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Not for mere entertainment By Mazda 6 This is a difficult book to rate as its appeal is limited. It is not for casual reading. It is an interesting example of history from a different viewpoint than usually found in textbooks. Victor Hugo demonstrates how to cut an egotistical dictator down to size with carefully crafted words and examples. The nephew of the more famous first Napoleon (the Great), emperor of France, was a Hitler like politician who took advantage of popularity to impose his will and desires on the French people, who blindly followed where he led. At the cost of personal exile, Hugo wrote this book attempting to waken fellow citizens to the danger they faced. Compared to modern tirades against political opponents, his words seem quaint and dated, but they were devastating. It made me admire Hugo for his courage and clear insight, and wish we had more political leaders like him today. The title of the book adequately summarizes its contents.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic! By Omni Modis This book is a must read if you're even slightly interested in Napoleon or the Napoleonic era. The "real" Napoleon, that is. Important thing to note before you pick this book up: Hugo is not comparing Napoleon I and II, instead it's between I and III. Napoleon II only reigned in title, and for such as insignificant time that it's not even worth mentioning (though on a personal level, it's a tremendously tragic life and one that should get more exposure...) but just keep that in mind. The writing is very clear and not academic. It's more of a manifesto than an academic report of sorts. It was clearly written for the people!

He was quick to regonise the social unrest in France. He was also quick to take advantage of it. His records speaks for its self. He was a genus of military and of power. Oddly, he was notgreatly interested in wealth. He gained his position thru wars. He loved to fight. It became his downfall.

Review I would read Gitanjali as I would read the Bible for comfort and for strength. -- Paul Nash --W. B. Yeats, September, 1912The translations were undertaken prior to a visit to England in 1912, where the poems were extremely well received. A slender volume was published in 1913, with an exhilarating preface by W. B. Yeats. In the same year, based on a corpus of three thin translations, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel prize. --WikipediaRabindranath Tagore, like the Indian Civilization itself, has been content to discover the soul and surrender himself to its spontaneity --W.B.Yeats

Mazza "Gitanjali" is a collection of prose poems by Indian author Rabindranath Tagore. The Dover Thrift Edition contains an introductory note on the life of Tagore, who lived from 1861 to 1941. According to this note, Tagore, who wrote poetry in Bengali, translated "Gitanjali" himself into English. The Dover edition also contains a 1912 introduction by William Butler Yeats. This English version of "Gitanjali" is a series of prose poems that reflect on the interrelationships among the poet/speaker, the deity, and the world. Although Tagore had a Hindu background, the spirituality of this book is generally expressed in universal terms; I could imagine a Christian, a Buddhist, a Muslim, or an adherent of another tradition finding much in this book that would resonate with him or her.The language in this book is often very beautiful. The imagery includes flowers, bird songs, clouds, the sun, etc.; one line about "the riotous excess of the grass" reminded me of Walt Whitman. Tagore's language is sensuous and sometimes embraces paradox. Like Whitman and Emily Dickinson, he sometimes seems to be resisting traditional religion and prophetically looking towards a new spirituality.A sample of Tagore's style: "I surely know the hundred petals of a lotus will not remain closed for ever and the secret recess of its honey will be bared" (from section #98). As companion texts for this mystical volume I would recommend Jack Kerouac's "The Scripture of the Golden Eternity" and Juan Mascaro's translation of the Dhammapada.

A treat to the spirit By Sheeba Arnold The word and the deed were never far from each other in Tagore's life and not surprisingly he advocated the Universal Man. He was a polymath: a poet, fiction writer, dramatist, painter, educator, political thinker, philosopher of science. He was also a genius in music, choreography, architecture, social service and statesmanship. Over six decades Tagore gave the world some 2,500 songs, more than 2,000 paintings and drawings, 28 volumes of poetry, drama, opera, short stories, novels, essays and diaries and a vast number of letters.I would enthusiatically recommend this book by my favorite author. Like the Psalms of David, Gitanjali is a soothing balm to the spirit. I read this entire book in less than two hours and has been my long-trip travel companion ever since. The introduction to the book by W. B. Yeats is magical and all the poems in this book transcend your imagination. The variety and quality of the poems are unbelievable!

Tagore's poetry appeals to the highest spiritual plains yet at the same time appeals to the human heart to the highest order. To achieve something like this will require a person of high spiritual attainment.Gitanjali, or 'Song Offerings', is a collection of prose written with the Creator in mind, reflecting Tagore's wish to be united with the Creator. In his poetry one cannot miss his show of devotion and his pure love for the Creator, using variuos metaphorical subjects like flowers, rivers etc. One cannot but admire the beauty and art in it.To give you a feel of his poetry, the Gitanjali starts with this : "Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life..."W.B. Yeats, who contributed greatly to the exposure of Tagore to the Western world and subsequently to Tagore's award for the Nobel prize in Literature, has this to say, "...these prose translation from Rabindranath Tagore have stirred my blood as nothing has for years...".Highly recommended.

Precious Jewell will do what is right to protect those she cares for, even for the man she won't admit to needing. For Gareth Conroy, death doesn't matter anymore. He purposes that his spilt blood will bring the salvation of the colony, but will he realize too late that no single man of flesh and blood can bring redemption? Will the burgeoning hope of two stubborn, wounded souls fray or smolder in this exciting conclusion of The Bargain, Season I? The Bargain: Coming to London has given Precious Jewell a taste of freedom, and she will do anything, bear anything, to keep it. Defying her master is at the top of her mind, and she won’t let his unnerving charm sway her. Yet, will her restored courage lead her to forsake a debt owed to the grave and a child who is as dear to her as her own flesh? Gareth Conroy, the third Baron Welling, can neither abandon his upcoming duty to lead the fledgling colony of Port Elizabeth, South Africa nor find the strength to be a good father to his heir. Every look at the boy reminds him of the loss of his wife. Guilt over her death plagues his sleep, particularly when he returns to London. Perhaps the spirit and fine eyes of her lady’s maid, Precious Jewell, might offer the beleaguered baron a new reason to dream. The Bargain is a serialized story or soap opera told in episodes. Each episode averages from three to eight chapters, about 15,000 to 30,000 words. Each episode resolves one issue. Emotional cliffhangers may be offered, but the plot, the action of the episode, will be complete in resolving the main issue. My promise to you is that the action will be compelling, and I will tell you in the forward the length of the episode. This episode, Episode IV, is nine chapters long, 32,000 words. There are 4 episodes total for Season 1. Enjoy these Regency Tales set in South Africa. --VR The Bargain is the first Port Elizabeth Regency Tale. Episode 4: Redemption by Shed Blood

A Rare Treasure By Amazon Customer I adore this series; Baron Welling and Precious Jewell will have you pulling at your hairs, but that is also what has made this an amazing series. It is always a plus to read a historical that features a person of color. This was so good that I'm excited about The Bargain Season II, that will be released in 2016 . So fellow readers don't hesitate to go on this journey with Baron Welling and Precious Jewell, it is exiting, intriguing, frustrating and Joyful. Yes, come along and discover this rare, but beautiful treasure ( The Bargain).

Precious and Captain, Gareth worked through personal issues in all four episodes. Precious' issues were related to her life as a slave. Captain Gareth was plagued by thoughts that his deceased wife was unfaithful. Mzwamadoda, the South African is an interesting character and added an extra oomph to the story. Both Gareth and Mzwamadoda competed for Precious' love. I could not decide who I wanted to win her. This is a lovely story about the healing power of love for people who are deeply wounded.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Shirley By Shirley Having spent 38 years with my husband in the pastorate, I found the book to be relevant, reverent, and realistic. Our internal struggles of growth plus the stress of dealing with others' difficult problems caused us to lean on the Lord continually for guidance and wisdom. The author, a former Pastor, portrays all of this in a slower-paced novel set in the 1800s. His ability to apply spiritual understandings to everyday people/problems is unsurpassed. I admire MacDonald's writings, and would go so far to say he's my favorite author.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pastoral fiction -- an old masterpiece By R. W. Schwerdt I'd gladly recommend this novel to anyone in pastoral ministry, involved in the "cure of souls." It relates the ministry of a pastor new to his parish and the relationships that he encounters in the course of his service to the community, as well as his own interior wrestling over personal matters. It's slow paced (as befits a story written in the late 1800s), but wonderful. It's hard to tell how much might be autobiographical from George MacDonald's own life, but clearly his interest in ministering to the hearts and souls of people comes through.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful book By J. Colvin I love George MacDonald's writings. They require slower reading, come from a time when people had the time to meditate on higher values and the importance of leaving a true life. Mr. McDonald shows how a true life in the spirit is woven into our life through the simple events of every day life.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good By BABYSUNSET67 Gave it a 5 stars because the plot is good and juicy. Even though it has a few mistakes it doesn't take away the interest of continuing reading. The more you read the more intense and thicker it gets. I dislike Jerome. Emma seems cool but damn she is weak to men. That can be her downfall. Moving on to book 2

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good book!! By Chanell Nicole I gave this book 4 stars because of the errors but this was a very good story. It was very exciting and had a lot of drama going on.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good story, I laughed out loud By Book Me This is my first read from this author but I really enjoyed it. It's totally different than what I expected, but once I got into the story, it was fast paced and enthralling. I actually found myself laughing out loud and how terrible a judge of character Emma is at times only because the situations were crazy. The scene with the yellow panties...I cracked up. Anyway, this chick needs some counseling and higher self esteem but I could see this being a situation that other chicks who think they are bosses could get into. It's always the ones who think they have it all in the bag that don't know squat. Looking forward to book 2

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. Originally earning his way as an influential London music and theatre critic, Shaw's greatest gift was for the modern drama. Strongly influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he successfully introduced a new realism into English-language drama. He wrote more than 60 plays, among them Man and Superman, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Pygmalion. With his range from biting contemporary satire to historical allegory, Shaw became the leading comedy dramatist of his generation and one of the most important playwrights in the English language since the 17th century.

The Dark Lady of the sonnets, by Bernard Shaw

From Library Journal CBC Radio has recorded skilled actors of the renowned Shakespeare Festival of Canada reading dramas in front of audiences. The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, a playlet set in London around 1600, involves a palace guard, a quirky Shakespeare, and his lady of the title. A peevish Queen Elizabeth lords it over them amusingly. On the same cassette, a shorter Shakes vs. Shaw has Shakespeare debating George Bernard Shaw about which writer is greater. The author is clever, but these curtain raisers are trifles. Filumena is a worthy production of a popular 1946 Italian classic. For 25 years Filumena, a Neapolitan prostitute, has been the sometime mistress of a stolid businessman from whom she stole money to support her three illegitimate sons. Now she wants to marry him and make them legitimate; only then will she tell him which one is his. The majority of the actors do not affect Italian accents. Brisk pacing keeps this romantic comedy lively. This play, frequently revived in Italy, is recommended for general libraries where drama, especially of foreign origin, is sought. Stephen and Mr. Wilde fictionalizes events in 1882 when Oscar Wilde was in Toronto on a lecture tour. Stephen, his 39-year-old black valet, an illiterate slave until he was 19, uses words like dignified, spontaneous, and modulated. Oscar receives brash reporters at the hotel, one of whom identifies Stephen as a fugitive murderer. This mixture of biography, stock characters, and melodrama lacks conviction. Not recommended. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Shaw does a great job of imagining that the "dark lady" is Mary ... By Marette Stiritz Shaw does a great job of imagining that the "dark lady" is Mary Fitton, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, and of imagining an encounter between Elizabeth and Shakespeare when he slips in to meet Mary. Although Shaw knows by the time that he publishes his play that Mary Fitton is a blonde, this does not take away from his interesting depiction of Elizabeth nor his giving Shakespeare the eloquence he undoubtedly had.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Shaw and Shakespeare By Anthony T. Nasuta A cleverly written play in which Shaw presents his appeal for a National Theater by having Shakespeare appeal to Elizabeth the Queen. One of the main characters that Shaw incorporates in the process is Shakespeare's famous and controversial "The Dark Lady of the Sonnets". A truly enjoyable little sketch of a play.
