At the start of this masterful thriller, a famous English mathematician is kidnapped and his two bodyguards are killed at a guest house in the beautiful wine country outside Cape Town. It’s clearly a professional hit, and the spent shell cases offer a chilling clue: Each is engraved with the head of a spitting cobra.Meanwhile, in the city, a skilled thief is using his talents to put his sister through college. But he picks the wrong pocket, grabbing the wallet of a young American woman delivering something very valuable and dangerous to South Africa. The thief not only becomes the target of the Cobra, but unwittingly has in his possession information that could cause an international outcry. And it’s up to Captain Benny Griessel and his elite investigation team to find the pickpocket and track down the Cobra as the novel hurtles toward a brilliant, heart-stopping finale. Cobra is a first-rate thriller from a writer at the top of his game.

Cobra, by Deon Meyer

Review Shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association International DaggerA Publishers Weekly Top 10 Mystery & Thriller for Fall“Mr. Meyer, the leading thriller writer in his native country, traffics in crime-novel situations familiar the world over: drunken cops, charming robbers, dangerous murderers, sudden violence—and sometimes, issues of race. Mr. Meyer’s South Africa, however, is unique. His books, translated from Afrikaans, are usually set in the Cape Town region, where mountains spectacularly meet the sea on the Horn of Africa. Amid these vistas his detective confronts his own—and his country’s—tortured past and the legacy of Apartheid.”—Wall Street Journal“Meyer . . . vividly depicts the story of South Africa in his novels, from the hope and turmoil of the fall of apartheid to the corrupt and desperate aspects of present-day Cape Town. . . . Meyer’s novels have an insistent forward motion, and the ones featuring Captain Griessel in particular have a pleasing relentlessness.”—Los Angeles Review of Books“An excellent South African thriller featuring one of the best ensemble casts of policemen currently pounding the crime beat.”—Deadly Pleasures“Meyer’s assured fourth Bennie Griessel thriller takes the Cape Town homicide detective to South African wine country. . . . Suspense builds as the action shifts between Griessel’s and [Cape Town pickpocket] Tyrone’s increasingly life-threatening exploits.”—Publishers Weekly“Meyer combines intricate plotting, a compelling cast, and timely themes in this fourth novel featuring Captain Benny Griessel. . . . Meyer has added another provocative novel to his impressive oeuvre.”—Booklist“A chase-themed thriller set in the tense political climate of post-apartheid South Africa. . . . As always, Meyer writes with a strong sense of character and an eye on post-apartheid politics.”—Kirkus Reviews“Deon Meyer’s series . . . grow[s] richer and more sophisticated with each new book. This progression makes Cobra the most dazzling of the bunch.”—Toronto Star“In this ninth thriller, Deon Meyer shows his mastery of the form once again. He tells a great story with suspense that doesn’t let up. Highly recommended.”—I Love a Mystery

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Another gripping, pulse-pounding winner from Meyer By "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn South African Deon Meyer is the putative giant of second-tier thrillers (but he should be first-tier!). He stays consistently at the top of my pile of crime fiction literature, and never fails to pull me in with his muscular prose and taut, thrilling plot lines, the kind of narrative that usually takes place in a narrow period of time and with a lot at stake. In COBRA (and I won't reveal *why* the title, since it is fun just getting to it!), Benny Griessel is back again, fighting his personal demons as well as the external ones.Meyer has hit on the global zeitgeist of crime in his latest book, placing technology at the center of the plot. It is also fun watching Luddite Benny Griessel struggling to get a handle on 21st century telecommunications. Meyer, while keeping pace with progress, nails down the importance of creating rich characters to engage readers. He doesn't rely on technology alone to fasten us to the story. The first pages open with murder and abduction, with the Hawks (South Africa's top police) investigating the bloody mess at a remote guesthouse. Captain Griessel lines up a team to chase down the killer and the kidnapped. The next chapter introduces us to a petty pickpocket named Tyrone, who is trying to help his sister, Nadia, pay for university. We don't know how Tyrone figures into the multiple-homicide case, but Meyer seamlessly provides a juncture for the disparate threads to connect and catapult the story into thicker and more dangerous territory.Meyer is expert at enriching the story while moving forward vertically. For new readers, the author blends in enough for you to know that Griessel is a recovering alcoholic, and providing some backstory for his current circumstances. Although Benny is a tough, strong guy with plenty of mettle, the veteran detective has some burning issues that cause him to question aspects of his nature. Meyer has created a believable, long-suffering character in Benny.I was also delighted that he included the heavy-set, sharp, sometimes-comical Captain Mbali Kaleni, the only female in the DCPI Violent Crimes team. I first met her in Thirteen Hours, a memorable character who is both sympathetic and, in the latter book, periodically the brunt of a joke. However, when it comes to fighting crime, she is a force to be reckoned with, a crackerjack detective who is decisive, authoritative, and morally unequivocal. In COBRA, we also see new facets of her character. I'd like to see Meyer write a series of books with Kaleni as the primary protagonist. If you are new to this author, I am confident that COBRA will not be your last Meyer book. If you are already a fan, your expectations will be amply met; you'll be addicted from the first page. And, the answer to all COBRA's questions aren't guaranteed until the very last page, which keeps you guessing. Meyer is at his peak without being over-the-top! And the Glossary at the back of the book is not only edifying, but enjoyable.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. South African Detective Tracks Down Cold-Blooded Killer Who Leaves Behind Bullet Casings Marked With Engraved Cobra By Lynne E. One of the best things about COBRA--which is a very good spy thriller--is the South African setting. I like police procedurals, and was particularly interested in the descriptions of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and its Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (the "Hawks"), as well as the interactions between SAPS and other South African law enforcement bodies (the State Security Agency (SA), and the Crime Intelligence Unit (CI)).The plot is complicated: Captain Benny Griessel (a SAPS captain, a Hawk, and a recovering alcoholic) is lead detective in the investigation of a triple homicide and apparent kidnapping. Two of the victims are highly trained bodyguards, who were hired to protect a mysterious, now-missing person (a man with a British accent who was traveling on a forged French passport under an assumed name). Bullet casings at the scene are engraved with a cobra and the letters NM--strongly suggesting that the kidnapping/homicides are the work of a hit man. When Benny and his Hawks team query Interpol about the "cobra" bullets, they learn that similar bullets are connected with a series of probable murders-for-hire committed by a known, cold-blooded individual. But when the British Consulate reluctantly provides a possible identification for the kidnapped man, everything goes south. Benny learns that the Hawks' offices and cellphones are being bugged by their own government security forces; and SAP is ordered to turn the case over to SA and CI. If it continues, Benny's investigation must go underground, and every participant's career will be in jeopardy. But continue it must, because the kidnapped man is the key to an international secret that threatens the entire world's banking system. It's a secret so important that the hit man will stop at nothing to obtain it--and the British, South African, and United States governments will likewise stop at nothing to prevent that from happening. The novel includes many up-to-the-minute references to current world events, as well as some interesting, generalized forensics material about tracking cell phones and retrieving password-protected data. There are a lot of memorable, likeable characters. To name a few, there is Benny himself, his ramrod-stiff superior (Nyathi), Benny's ranting partner (Cupido), the formidable female detective (Mbali), and the clever pickpocket (Tyrone), who makes an already-impossible situation even worse by stealing the wrong thing at the wrong time. This intricately plotted novel works well as translated from Afrikaans for English-speaking readers. It's a page-turner, with many exciting action scenes. Without question, author Deon Meyer is a true master of the spy thriller genre.Warning: COBRA contains a lot of very coarse Afrikaans language. (There is a glossary of expletives and of some Afrikaans expressions that is included in my Advance Reader's Copy. This glossary may or may not be included in the book as finally translated and published.)

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A fine writer; this book is a diappointment for me, but that's a minority view and I strongly recommend his others By Peter G. Keen I love Deon Meyer's thrillers. They are terse, evocative and beautifully textured, bringing alive the people and problems of the new multiracial South Africa. The plots have pace and intrigue. This one, though, was very flat for me and I found it difficult to stay with. I see three explanations beyond my own limitations. First, the translation from the Afrikaans seems -- for me -- lacking in smoothness. It reads awkwardly. Second, the story takes far too long to take off and cohere. It's on a grander scale than Meyer's previous ones and mixes international intrigue and native killer villain. It also has a diversionary theme of the complex lovelife of the police hero, jaded, alcoloholic, fearful and anxious about the dangerous dynamics of his intense relationship with a singer, ex-alcoholic, etc. The stories don't mesh and the first hundred pages drag. Third, the key figure in the overall drama remains a cipher before he finally appears so that there is no anchor to relate to. the characters and narrative don't seem to cohere.OK, that's my review, which is the responsibility for being in the Vine program. Let me offset it by raving about Meyer's other books and suggest that if you haven't read any then Trackers and Thirteen Hours are outstanding. My own views of Cobra seem to be in a distinct minority among reviewers.

In 1866, (Herbert George) H.G. Wells was born to a working class family in Kent, England. Young Wells received a spotty education, interrupted by several illnesses and family difficulties, and became a draper's apprentice as a teenager. The headmaster of Midhurst Grammar School, where he had spent a year, arranged for him to return as an "usher," or student teacher. Wells earned a government scholarship in 1884, to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Normal School of Science. Wells earned his bachelor of science and doctor of science degrees at the University of London. After marrying his cousin, Isabel, Wells began to supplement his teaching salary with short stories and freelance articles, then books, including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Wells created a mild scandal when he divorced his cousin to marry one of his best students, Amy Catherine Robbins. Although his second marriage was lasting and produced two sons, Wells was an unabashed advocate of free (as opposed to "indiscriminate") love. He continued to openly have extra-marital liaisons, most famously with Margaret Sanger, and a ten-year relationship with the author Rebecca West, who had one of his two out-of-wedlock children. A one-time member of the Fabian Society, Wells sought active change. His 100 books included many novels, as well as nonfiction, such as A Modern Utopia (1905), The Outline of History (1920), A Short History of the World (1922), The Shape of Things to Come (1933), and The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind (1932). One of his booklets was Crux Ansata, An Indictment of the Roman Catholic Church. Although Wells toyed briefly with the idea of a "divine will" in his book, God the Invisible King (1917), it was a temporary aberration. Wells used his international fame to promote his favorite causes, including the prevention of war, and was received by government officials around the world. He is best-remembered as an early writer of science fiction and futurism. He was also an outspoken socialist. Wells and Jules Verne are each sometimes referred to as "The Fathers of Science Fiction".

In the days of the comet, by H.G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. Originally earning his way as an influential London music and theatre critic, Shaw's greatest gift was for the modern drama. Strongly influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he successfully introduced a new realism into English-language drama. He wrote more than 60 plays, among them Man and Superman, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Pygmalion. With his range from biting contemporary satire to historical allegory, Shaw became the leading comedy dramatist of his generation and one of the most important playwrights in the English language since the 17th century.

This story was delightful and brilliant. This was great. Instead of a love affair, we get a high-stakes game of chess with Cleopatra making calculated moves to secure the throne of Egypt, but her opponent, Caesar, excels at the game as well. Shrewd takes on Wise in this excellent battle of wits, giving us a refreshingly original story that portrays Cleopatra as a crafty politician seeking power rather than a romantic siren interested in an affair of the heart. This story was smart and funny. I loved it and wanted more when it was over. I'll have to buy another one of his books. I just love his style.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Reading Shaw's works are a genuine treat... By Marie Martin This is a wonderful, and much more likely, interpretation of Cleopatra's romantic involvement with Caesar. Most writers are tempted to turn it into a great love affair, but Shaw reveals a clever and ambitious Cleopatra whose reasons for sinking her claws into Caesar are entirely political. As much as I'm a sucker for a good romance, I found this tale of sly and loveless manipulation to be much more intriguing. This story takes place when Caesar has occupied Egypt. Cleopatra wants to steal the throne out from under her brother and realizes that Caesar has the power to give it to her. The lengths she goes to in order to gain Caesar's favor or even stand in his presence are zany. She even goes so far as to roll herself up in a carpet that's to be delivered to him.Shaw is my favorite of the Victorian playwrights. His works were revolutionary in many ways. Use of humor was rare and exceptional for playwrights during that era, but Shaw was not afraid to make audiences laugh. He also tackled serious moral, political, and social issues in his plays at a time when sappy dramas were all the rage. He was truly bold and innovative and greatly contributed to dramatic art. He had an amazing gift, the ability to make people think while simultaneously making them laugh.Reading Shaw's works are a genuine treat. All of his plays are fabulous. His characters are memorable, and his humor is brilliant. This is a wonderful book, charming, significant, and insightful. I can't recommend it enough.

Published by MobileReference (mobi). This is a fine edition of the delightful Shaw play. Shaw's Caesar is a man of self-doubt and good humor, a vivid counterpoint to the haughty, aristocratic Caesar of Shakespeare.
