This is a wealth of really fine poetry and prose.I recommend getting the first volume of the poetical works, but it probably isn't absolutely necessary.Since the books are free, get them both. You can always delete them if you're not satisfied, because the language of this period can put your brain on overtime.

Torture Man, by Warren Adler

Review "Torture Man is drama on every page, with suspenseful and gripping scenes. The characters are portrayed realistically and blend easily with the plot. It is an imaginative and terrifying story, a thriller from the first page to the last. With many interwoven snippets of personal tragedies and events relating to almost all the characters, the 'story' in this tale reaches epic proportions. It is a worthy addition to one's collection of thrillers. Very well narrated, this keeps you immersed from the time you open the book till I reached the back cover." - READERS' FAVORITE

Torture Man personalizes very abstract but subtle moral conflicts By Shawn In Torture Man, Mr. Adler has fought nobly to respectfully represent the most intimate reflections of thoughtful people on the subject of terrorism and interrogation. I say "fought nobly" because with such hyper-charged political subjects it is all but impossible to have readers with any opinions walk away feeling their perspective has been properly portrayed. But for my part, I was surprised to feel both justified and challenged at various points throughout the story. To my thinking, both Carl and Sarah feel like very real people, with prejudices, assumptions, fears and goals, that drive their choices. Adler spends perhaps a bit too much time in their ruminations, but then, so do we all in our more difficult choices. The result is that once you step beyond the crucial suspension of disbelief in the circumstances, Torture Man feels like the essentially inevitable outcome of such intense personalities and convictions.Having said that, as a novel, the book could have been significantly more complex in plot (and longer), most particularly in terms of the conclusion. Clearly Adler's effort was in the people. I would genuinely like to know more about both of them after reading Torture Man, as well as one or two other individuals who make a fascinating appearance.A powerful emotional and intellectual point is made by actually living in these characters' shoes for a time: is not fair to make war and personal suffering into purely idealistic, impersonal concepts, on either side of the issue. Adler attempts to forcibly personalize both sides, and does so effectively. I can only imagine that every reader will to some degree seriously reflect on their own idealism in light of Carl and Sarah's very personal intimacy with the kind of pain that to most of us is merely abstract.

The drama follows a former CIA operative and a prominent anti-war activist whose 11-year-old daughter is kidnapped by Islamist terrorists for a $10 million ransom.Mr. Adler is an acclaimed author and playwright and knows how to address complicated themes and how to tackle contemporary social issues. “Torture Man” premise hits close to home by questioning interrogation methods and terrorism, it also touches the themes of family, love relationships and the power of money.Although I did not find the story to be original it was nevertheless very captivating and extremely visual. Without any doubts this hostage-suspense hot button thriller is an excellent choice to make it to the big screen. Many chapters are dedicated to learning about the main players (Sarah and anti-war activist and Carl a CIA operative), their opinions and viewpoints are at the forefront. Of course they don’t like each other and throughout the drama the sentiment is repeated numerous times. After the kidnapping the action moves to Sarah’s house where Carl’s years of training in interrogation technics become more than questionable. The scenes are descriptive but not gruesome and the action moves at a steady pace. The narrative is clear and simple. Nothing special about the characterization, the players are the run of the mill sort we have in all this type of story. Having said this, I like the story it held my attention from page one and I zipped through the pages in not time. I have been reading Mr. Adler for some time now I enjoy his style and especially the variety of topic each book brings.I received this book from the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This is the Way I see it.

The premise is promising By LazyDayBooks The premise of Torture Man is promising – take two individuals who are polar opposites in their worldviews and put them in a life and death scenario where they must rely on each other and then see if either of them changes their long-held belief system.A lot of time in the first five chapters was devoted to learning the main character’s opinions and viewpoints, mainly through their own internal thoughts. Neither Sarah nor Carl are likable characters, they came across more as caricatures of far-left and far-right political foes than real people. Sarah is an anti-war activist who thinks highly of herself and feels entitled to a privileged lifestyle while lambasting the excesses of everyone else’s lifestyle. Carl is a CIA operative who has years of specialized training in how to interrogate the enemy and believes people like Sarah are naive because they’re not privy to the intelligence reports he has seen or the cases he has worked. They don’t like each other, but it’s based mainly on what they think they know. Their meeting early in the novel is fairly short , not something you would use in real life to make such harsh judgments about a person you just met. And just in case you missed something the first time, it was repeated often, which I found quite annoying.Torture Man is only 197 pages long and it takes 87 of them before the daughter is kidnapped, which doesn’t leave much time for an investigation, interrogation and rescue mission. Most of the action takes place in Sarah’s New York City apartment, where she constantly undermines and interferes with Carl’s interrogation of the suspect and her husband cries a lot about his own stupidity. Carl quickly loses control of the interrogation and then has to react to events around him instead of controlling the situation as his years of training have taught him. The repetitive nature of the character’s thoughts and external dialogue makes this part of the book unbelievable and tedious. Also, for someone who the reader is supposed to believe has no problem with actual torture of suspects, Carl is surprisingly mild in his methods, especially when time is a factor. Duct tape, a slap across the face and threatening the suspect’s family would not sway a terrorist who truly believes in his cause. Meanwhile, Sarah thinks talking to the terrorists and appealing to them as a mother is all it will take to get her daughter back. I mean, if she just explains to them how much she loves her daughter, surely they’ll understand and just bring her home, right?I expected more from such an accomplished author as Warren Adler. I feel that cutting out the repetition and tighter editing would have made Torture Man an excellent 80-100 page novella, but the substance of the story couldn’t support the full length of the book.Having said all that, Variety reported earlier this year that Torture Man is in development as a movie. I actually think the story will translate better on the big screen than it does on the page, and I’m looking forward to seeing it.*This review was first published on the Lazy Day Books blog. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The writing is captivating. The author’s prose is clear and precise. She has an acute power of observation. It is such a pleasure to read it. The protagonist Isobel, a writer struggling to survive on very limited financial resources and even less social support, is truly endearing in her struggle to become a writer. She becomes destitute, sick and eventually breaks down mentally and collapses with tuberculosis. Every stage of her illness and disease is described so beautifully and precisely. The story brings us into a sanatorium where slowly Isobel describes her mental and physical recovery. Although the subject matter is grim, the narration is by no means depressing. Isobel’s struggles are heartbreaking but narrated with such clear insight and in a way that is witty and light to read. I enjoy books set within a medical context so this story was just right for me.THE ISLAND GIRL (THE MAURITIUS MIGRANTS SERIES Book 2)

On a spring morning in 1872, former Civil War officer Ben Champion is discovered dead in his Chicago bedroom—a bayonet protruding from his back. What starts as a routine case for Detective Frank Hanley soon becomes anything but, as his investigation into Champion’s life turns up hidden truths best left buried. Meanwhile, Rivka Kelmansky’s long-lost brother, Aaron, arrives on her doorstep, along with his mulatto wife and son. Fugitives from an attack by night riders, Aaron and his family know too much about past actions that still threaten powerful men—defective guns provided to Union soldiers, and an 1864 conspiracy to establish Chicago as the capital of a Northwest Confederacy. Champion had his own connection to that conspiracy, along with ties to a former slave now passing as white and an escaped Confederate guerrilla bent on vengeance, any of which might have led to his death. Hanley and Rivka must untangle this web of circumstances, amid simmering hostilities still present seven years after the end of the Civil War, as they race against time to solve the murder, before the secrets of bygone days claim more victims.

DO NOT MISS THE HANLEY AND RIVKA STORIES By Linda Hoffman Another great story with continuing characters from Ms. Pirrone's previous novel, "Shall We Not Revenge". Like her previous novel, this book does not disappoint. Ms. Pirrone has a way of making her characters believable. Her story weaves history, religion, social issues, mystery and romance in a storyline I hate to see come to an end, and has me looking forward to her next Hanley and Rivka adventure.

Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton KCMG FRGS was a British geographer, explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer and diplomat. He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia, Africa and the Americas as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian, and African languages. Burton's best-known achievements include travelling in disguise to Mecca, an unexpurgated translation of One Thousand and One Nights (also commonly called The Arabian Nights in English after Andrew Lang's abridgement), bringing the Kama Sutra to publication in English, and journeying with John Hanning Speke as the first Europeans led by Africa's greatest explorer guide, Sidi Mubarak Bombay, utilizing route information by Indian and Omani merchants who traded in the region, to visit the Great Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. Burton extensively criticized colonial policies (to the detriment of his career) in his works and letters. He was a prolific and erudite author and wrote numerous books and scholarly articles about subjects including human behaviour, travel, falconry, fencing, sexual practices, and ethnography. A unique feature of his books is the copious footnotes and appendices containing remarkable observations and unexpurgated information. He was a captain in the army of the East India Company serving in India (and later, briefly, in the Crimean War). Following this he was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa and led an expedition guided by the locals and was the first European to see Lake Tanganyika. In later life he served as British consul in Fernando Po, Santos, Damascus and, finally, Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded a knighthood (KCMG) in 1886.

Nearly everyone can tell you about his scandalous doings with native women, his marriage to an ultra-Catholic Englishwoman, and the latter's destruction of the author's private papers after his death. Ever since I read Fawn Brodie's excellent biography, THE DEVIL DRIVES, I have collected some 20 different Burton books and read most of them. If you make allowances for Burton's diabolical thoroughness (involved footnotes, appendices, foreign language quotes, tables, etc.) and his Victorian circumlocutions in dealing with taboo subjects, he is a truly wonderful read. Although FIRST FOOTSTEPS is not his most famous book, it is probably the best one to start with. The action is not only more focussed, but Burton did feel he needed quite so much of a scholarly carapace to report back to the scholarly organizations back in Britain. And it finishes up with a stirring postscript about an attack on Burton's camp by Somalis in which the author barely escaped with his life. Perhaps this is a book that Presidents Bush and Clinton should have read before committing U.S. troops to the region: Burton shows us that not much has changed in the region in 150 years. He was in constant danger, and survived only because his knowledge and guts were more than an a match for his enemies. This is an exciting book and deserves to be better known.

Junkins Though I was aware of Burton before reading this text, I had no idea how much I would enjoy his writing. His language is eloquent, with an almost stereotypically dry British wit, especially as he describes his companions. At times, Burton seems to lose himself in the aesthetic response to Africa's environment, allowing his writing to swell to almost purple prose in his descriptions.I also enjoyed reading this text through the lens of Edward Said's notions of Orientalism. Burton certainly falls prey to the Eurocentrism typical of his era, and at times his descriptions of the rationale of his Arab / Somali companions is borderline offensive. However, what I found most interesting in this text is Burton's own critique of Europeans. In First Footsteps, one could argue that Said's Orientalism isn't driven by culture but class. Burton is just as disgusted by the English working class as he is by Somali nomads. The Kindle version contains no illustrations; I would highly recommend referring to a map while reading First Footsteps. Also, the footnotes are not linked, but I didn't find that particularly bothersome.

Pyne The reviews of some of Richard Burton's books, as well as those of other 19th century explorers, strike me as hilarious. It's as if people expect that these books to be written in a style that would make for some blockbuster Hollywood movie. This is the REAL DEAL people! Burton didn't write this or other books with the idea in mind of entertaining 20th century couch potatoes starved for action. Apparently people's attention spans get seriously taxed when detailed observations about a country's people and culture are brought into play. When in fact, what could be more important in a first hand account of previously unexplored (at least by Europeans) regions? If you want action at every turn and tailor made story lines then stick with Tom Clancy novels or some such. Maybe faketion turns some would be adventurers on, but not me. This book is a truly incredible account of a larger than life adventure!

"My Two Cents" is the first book of short stores by New London, CT, writer, Arthur Dean. He writes in his introduction: I have always envied writers who lived through difficult times-war, famine, international intrigue. If they followed the old adage, "Write what you know," they had plenty of material. When I first began to write, in my mid-forties, often at 4 or 5 in the morning, I feared that my "ordinary life," as a first generation Jewish-American, was far from interesting. Yet, despite my misgivings, I plunged ahead, letting my everyday concerns surface in my writing."

From the Author DEDICATIONThis book is dedicated to my wife, Barbara. We met on line 40 years ago while students at the University of Pennsylvania before that meant a computer aided encounter. We have rarely been separated since. She edited my stories, and encouraged me, fueling me with her enthusiasm, listening to my ideas at al hours of the day or night. At times I think I write just to see if I can make her smile.

About the Author Artie Dean was born in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. After finishing a BA at New York University in 1974 he attended the University of Pennsylvania for his dental degree, where he met his wife Barbara. After a residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia he trained at Boston University until 1981 to become a Periodontist, a specialist in dental implants and gum diseases. He has been practicing in Groton, Connecticut since 1981.  While his scientific training may not be relevant to his writing career, certainly raising his four children was. In fact his storytelling truly began while putting the kids to bed. In the Dean household bedtimes were an elaborate affair. Artie told "chose your own adventure," stories each night and the children would choose the outcome. As his four children entered adolescence their desire for bedtime stories understandably waned. But their father's imagination did not. He began to write stories and essays for both the Waterford Times newspaper and the Jewish Leader of Eastern Connecticut. His column, "My Two Cents," has appeared biweekly in the Jewish Leader for the past ten years. This collection includes a variety of stories from the "My Two Cents" column and sports related essays originally printed in the Waterford Times. Three of the stories: "My Father's Shoes," "The Kiddush Cup," and "A Family Found," were published in the Masorti/Conservative Judaism magazine, an international publication distributed to members of the Conservative Movement throughout the United States and Canada.Artie lives with his wife, Barbara, in Waterford, Connecticut. He continues to write, and Barbara edits all his work. Currently he is working on a novel. He plans to publish another collection of short stories next year.

A Contemporary Descendant of Isaac Bashevis Singer By Two Upper West Side Readers This writer captures the essence of humanity in its imperfection, humor and full spectrum of emotional life. He is a gifted writer who knows how to tell a tale. You will read through this with recognition and insight. You will be at once entertained and moved by the vision of humanity mined by this writer. When you finally put this book down, it will be with the awareness that you have become a better person for having read it.

The pages flipped and before I knew it, I was on the last short story. It was hard not to fall in love with the characters with all of their human characteristics. The author wove such a beautiful picture of interesting people and places in one's mind, it truly had the reader desiring more. It stirred the heart and I found myself laughing, crying and gasping out loud many times over.
