Our internal struggles of growth plus the stress of dealing with others' difficult problems caused us to lean on the Lord continually for guidance and wisdom. The author, a former Pastor, portrays all of this in a slower-paced novel set in the 1800s. His ability to apply spiritual understandings to everyday people/problems is unsurpassed. I admire MacDonald's writings, and would go so far to say he's my favorite author.

Schwerdt I'd gladly recommend this novel to anyone in pastoral ministry, involved in the "cure of souls." It relates the ministry of a pastor new to his parish and the relationships that he encounters in the course of his service to the community, as well as his own interior wrestling over personal matters. It's slow paced (as befits a story written in the late 1800s), but wonderful. It's hard to tell how much might be autobiographical from George MacDonald's own life, but clearly his interest in ministering to the hearts and souls of people comes through.

They require slower reading, come from a time when people had the time to meditate on higher values and the importance of leaving a true life. Mr. McDonald shows how a true life in the spirit is woven into our life through the simple events of every day life.

Even though it has a few mistakes it doesn't take away the interest of continuing reading. The more you read the more intense and thicker it gets. I dislike Jerome. Emma seems cool but damn she is weak to men. That can be her downfall. Moving on to book 2

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good book!! By Chanell Nicole I gave this book 4 stars because of the errors but this was a very good story. It was very exciting and had a lot of drama going on.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good story, I laughed out loud By Book Me This is my first read from this author but I really enjoyed it. It's totally different than what I expected, but once I got into the story, it was fast paced and enthralling. I actually found myself laughing out loud and how terrible a judge of character Emma is at times only because the situations were crazy. The scene with the yellow panties...I cracked up. Anyway, this chick needs some counseling and higher self esteem but I could see this being a situation that other chicks who think they are bosses could get into. It's always the ones who think they have it all in the bag that don't know squat. Looking forward to book 2

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. Originally earning his way as an influential London music and theatre critic, Shaw's greatest gift was for the modern drama. Strongly influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he successfully introduced a new realism into English-language drama. He wrote more than 60 plays, among them Man and Superman, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Pygmalion. With his range from biting contemporary satire to historical allegory, Shaw became the leading comedy dramatist of his generation and one of the most important playwrights in the English language since the 17th century.

The Dark Lady of the sonnets, by Bernard Shaw

From Library Journal CBC Radio has recorded skilled actors of the renowned Shakespeare Festival of Canada reading dramas in front of audiences. The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, a playlet set in London around 1600, involves a palace guard, a quirky Shakespeare, and his lady of the title. A peevish Queen Elizabeth lords it over them amusingly. On the same cassette, a shorter Shakes vs. Shaw has Shakespeare debating George Bernard Shaw about which writer is greater. The author is clever, but these curtain raisers are trifles. Filumena is a worthy production of a popular 1946 Italian classic. For 25 years Filumena, a Neapolitan prostitute, has been the sometime mistress of a stolid businessman from whom she stole money to support her three illegitimate sons. Now she wants to marry him and make them legitimate; only then will she tell him which one is his. The majority of the actors do not affect Italian accents. Brisk pacing keeps this romantic comedy lively. This play, frequently revived in Italy, is recommended for general libraries where drama, especially of foreign origin, is sought. Stephen and Mr. Wilde fictionalizes events in 1882 when Oscar Wilde was in Toronto on a lecture tour. Stephen, his 39-year-old black valet, an illiterate slave until he was 19, uses words like dignified, spontaneous, and modulated. Oscar receives brash reporters at the hotel, one of whom identifies Stephen as a fugitive murderer. This mixture of biography, stock characters, and melodrama lacks conviction. Not recommended. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Shaw does a great job of imagining that the "dark lady" is Mary ... By Marette Stiritz Shaw does a great job of imagining that the "dark lady" is Mary Fitton, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, and of imagining an encounter between Elizabeth and Shakespeare when he slips in to meet Mary. Although Shaw knows by the time that he publishes his play that Mary Fitton is a blonde, this does not take away from his interesting depiction of Elizabeth nor his giving Shakespeare the eloquence he undoubtedly had.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Shaw and Shakespeare By Anthony T. Nasuta A cleverly written play in which Shaw presents his appeal for a National Theater by having Shakespeare appeal to Elizabeth the Queen. One of the main characters that Shaw incorporates in the process is Shakespeare's famous and controversial "The Dark Lady of the Sonnets". A truly enjoyable little sketch of a play.

He is now best remembered for his science fiction novels, and Wells is called the father of science fiction, along with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. The new Machiavelli, by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not about Machiavelli, a story of life and loves By Ken H.G. Wells is known best by his Science Fiction—War of the Worlds, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, and other classics—but he also wrote stories that more properly fit in the "Literature" genre. The New Machiavelli seems to fall into this category.I very much dislike "Literature." This genre has produced many great stories, but so many stories of this genre that I've read seemed boring and pointless, a slice of life best left uncovered. For the most part, this story is no exception. To me, Wells was a genius as a writer, and it shows here, but his tendency to belabor even the smallest observations about his characters, his scenes, or topographical areas leads to a tedium that encourages the reader to put the book down and go watch a movie. With his writing, Wells has the ability to make it all seem real, to often bring the reader to tears, or to make him laugh out loud. This story contains all of that, and some high-flown emotional language into the bargain. Wells held nothing back. That's part of the problem; but it also gives the reader some good moments as well. The most tedious part was the first half of the story. It's written in an autobiographical style (whether based on Wells's actual life, or made up, I have no idea). The interesting part is the childhood, but when it starts into his adulthood, it concerns itself tediously with politics. He's mostly immersed in Socialism of early 1900s England, and uses disturbing Socialist ideas like, "...serve that end, to subdue the undisciplined worker and undisciplined weath to it..." or "An uneducated, underbred, and underfed propertyless man is a man who has lost the possibility of liberty...A man who is swimming hopelessly for life wants nothing but the liberty to get out of the water; he'll give every other liberty away for it—until he gets out."But about halfway through the story Wells's character discovers that it all seems false to him, his way of life, his political views, his marriage, and he switches to the Opposition. This is where the story becomes more interesting. He uses phrases like, "We Liberals have done more mischief through well-intentioned benevolence than all the selfishness in the world could have done."The story ends without a firm resolution of what he is to do with the rest of his life. He's with his mistress—itself an episode extremely well told, as he wars with himself about the propriety and the scandal of it—and they are leaving London, his home, perhaps forever. He has regrets, and he has a bit of joy about the future, and the story leaves it there. In fact, the last few chapters of the story almost make the reading of the story worth while.I rate this one at three out of five stars. I wouldn't read it again, but reading Wells is an experience, and I'm glad I didn't miss this one.

Michelle Davis I anxiously awaited the sequel to part 1 and unfortunately upon completion I did not have the overall feeling of satisfaction that I felt at the end of pt. 1. The situationship that Smoke and Karreuche were involved in was seemingly endless causing the reader to have a feeling of tedium while reading. Geek and Tommy were plain and simple a--holes. They have absolutely no redeeming qualities and if the truth be told should have been ousted from the crew long ago. I thought Smoke was a lot smarter than his actions showed in the book. The fact that he was sleeping with the enemy and was unable to pick up any negative or bad vibes from her spoke volumes to me. Even Shantinka was leary of Tango upon meeting her and she plainly stated she was a snake up to no good. Karreuche, Karreuche, Karreuche, when she continued to deal with Geek after she became aware of his marital status I lost a little bit of respect for her. Not only did she allow herself to be regulated to the sidelines as a sidepiece, but on top of that she willingly accepted his physical abuse. How or Why she felt it necessary to stick by a man that constantly physically, mentally, and spiritually abuse her person was mind boggling to me. She left the blinders on so long that when she finally became aware of what was happening in her face she consciously chose to continue in this toxic relationship. While I totally disliked the Draya character, Karreuche deserved that a-- kicking and then some. The fact that she had a friend like Shatinka who was willing to speak plain truth without sugar cxoatinf or downplaying the error of Karreuche's ways was extremely rewarding.

Plewse , please, please, why is Eyana getting away with murders. I can't believe she killed Kareem and now she was able to kill her lover Brad and dump his death on CheChe. Please let her go in part 3. Another one deserving karma is Tangi. The girls were worse than the men. Just crazy set-ups and beat downs. I'm sorry I don't like Draya, but I'm happy she gave Geek and CheChe a nice mace filled beating. CheChe may be young, but she should know better than to cheatb with a married man. She was a weak side chick. I'm glad she moved on with Dale, but rooting for her and Smoke. I really hope she matures in part 3. She had to stand up for herself and put Tangi, Draya and Eyana in their place. Especially if she's hooking up with Smoke. She needs to hook up with Lala and get schooled. Aw Geek so disappointed me. I thought maybe, his character would have some explanation about Draya. I so was not expecting this, but not surprised. Him and Tommy deserve a slow painful exit. I hope Shauntika is OK. Wow! The ending with CheChe's mom. Like wow! I'm so geeking for part 3!!! Lucinda hurry up!!!!

Tommy was no better I can't wait for them to get theirs. I'm happy that CheChe was showing some growth and hopefully she'll find her happily ever after. That ending was like whoa! I can't wait for part 3.
