Amazing By Renato Passos I am a frequent consumer of the so called sub-literature (like most teenagers), but forgive me my dear friends Anne Rice, Marion Bradley, Stephen King, Sidney Sheldon, etc... I love your work, but finally I found myself reading a DECENT and INTELLIGENT and USEFUL book by a genious called Maquiavelo. "The Prince" deserves to be used as a manual, not barely read... I don't say it should be followed blindly, though it should be mentally discussed by all. ESSENTIAL READING !

By A Customer Considered by many MacDonald's best novel, Alec Forbes of Howglen contains a diversity of characters, personalities, and locales, yet maintains an unstrained and unforced continuity in that there appears no attempt to contrive or incorporate that which is ill-suited or unbelievable. The plot and various subplots flow, commingle, diversify, and rejoin with no break in the natural stream of the story line. Whereas in many novels of such diverse and complex characterization, the reader is forced to backtrack or rethink that which has gone before, there are no such obstacles placed in the road of those who journey alongside Annie and Alec. This is an absolutely wonderful tale of the lives of two children, Annie and Alec, as they grow into adulthood. Although from two distinct social classes, which occurrence provides ample and diverse challenges for our beloved hero and heroine, Alec and Annie find, after considerable difficulty, trials innumerable, soul-rending afflictions, natural disasters, and, in general, some rather horrific catastrophes, a slender, yet all-powerful, thread which binds them together. Upon the death of her parents, Annie, who has known nothing but the idyllic life of the small farm, awakens to find everything that she has known and loved gone; her sole childhood companion and dear friend, Brownie-the family cow, as well as the remainder of the livestock, farm implements, furniture, and accessories sold, and she, poor little soul, on the way to live with her father's miserly, mean, hypocritical cousin, Robert Bruce, and his family of ill-bred mongrels, above their shop in town. She and a very small trunk, which contains her meager belongings, are unceremoniously stowed in an attic room which contains no curtains, no lights, holes in the floor, and is shared by rats. Grieved by the loss of her parents and her home would seem misery enough for one small child, but she is further tormented throughout the day by the Bruce children, and throughout the night by her fear of the rats. School is no sanctuary, for it is ruled by a petty tyrant who holds the firm, unequivocal belief that "to spare the rod is to spoil the child," and he cannot abide a spoiled or disobedient child. Alec, although far from wealthy, lives with his mother in a modest, but quite comfortable home near the edge of town. It is here that Annie eventually is driven to seek refuge from the countless horrors that stalk her days and nights. It is here, through the eyes of a mother, that Annie sees love sparkle and shimmer as it gently caresses, nurtures, and develops the soul of young Alec. Follow Annie and Alec, as well as all who cross their paths and touch their lives, in this compelling narrative of real life. For life is not without its trials and tribulations, sorrows and sadness, pains and afflictions, yet it is by and through all such as these,-the manner, means, and motives by which we face and overcome all such obstacles-, that we grow into the men and women that God would have us to be. As a muscle will atrophy if it never meets resistance, so then will a soul wither and die unless forced to encounter the oppressive weights of affliction, self-sacrifice, and self-denial. We, not unlike water, ever seek the path of least resistance. In this book, MacDonald adeptly illustrates that the best laid plans of men may not provide that which is best for men. God will pursue His plan regardless of our idle hopes, dreams, and speculations. As a result, we often find life, at best, difficult and trying, while, at worst, it may appear all but unbearable. There is, of course, a simple means by which we may "make the way smooth," and that is by doing as Jesus did-the will of His Father.

It has more laughs by far, though the story as a whole tends tward the melodramatic. It is George MacDonald's most complex work, intricately weaving together the stories of the two main characters: Annie Anderson (approx. 10 years old) and Alec Forbes (approx. 13 years old) as they meet and grow up to young adulthood. Annie looses her father and is forced to move in with her miserly cousin Robert the Bruce, one of the town's shop keepers. Alec eventually goes off to the big city to medical school and is forced to decide whether he will face life's disappointments or dissapate his life away with alchohol. The first half of this book is too sentimental and bucolic for my tastes and seems geared more tward an adolescent audience. However, the action in the second half more than makes up for it. I would caution the reader that this book has much more Scots dialect in it than some of George MacDonald's other popular works like "David Elginbrod" and "Donald Grant" and you would probably do better to tackle one of these first, so that you don't get too discouraged. This book stresses character development and has little or no sermonizing. Much of the first half of this book is taken up with the experiences of the two main characters in the town's one room school house and the overly strict disipline meeted out by the school master. His favorite method of disipline is the tawse (a small leather wip flung down from the shoulder) and indeed in one instance he almost beats young Alec to death. The apex of the novel is a tremendous flood, and you will find your eyes filling with tears as your favorite characters struggle for their lives. And you will be satisfied when your least favorite character gets his just deserts.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Touching, satisfying, and often humorous MacDonald story By Maggie Jarpey This MacDonald story has a LOT of the Scots dialect, which I've become accustomed to now, but if I had read it earlier, it would have discouraged me. The Kindle version, however, has a glossary at the end with Scots words defined! So helpful! I will read Sir Gibbie again and use that glossary. Alec and Annie, the two main characters are very likable and very real (but, then, all MacDonald's characters are very real). As always, there are a few villains you will love to hate even though MacDonald keeps reminding you that as a Christian you shouldn't hate them but instead feel sorry for them. And Cosmo Cupples's relationship with Alec is oftentimes hilarious and in the end one of the most touching and satisfying things I have ever read. Some of Alec's adventures in his younger days dragged for me, but once he grew older, he was always interesting. Through Annie Anderson, MacDonald shows the tender love of God as well as he ever has. She brought tears to my eyes by making me see, through her words, how loving God is. My favorite MacDonald books are Donal Grant and Sir Gibbie, but this one is high up.

Ebook PDF De Profundis (Spanish Edition), by Oscar Wilde

De Profundis (Latin: "from the depths") is a letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, to "Bosie" (Lord Alfred Douglas). During its first half Wilde recounts their previous relationship and extravagant lifestyle which eventually led to Wilde's conviction and imprisonment for gross indecency. He indicts both Lord Alfred's vanity and his own weakness in acceding to those wishes. In the second half, Wilde charts his spiritual development in prison and identification with Jesus Christ, whom he characterises as a romantic, individualist artist. The letter began "Dear Bosie" and ended "Your Affectionate Friend". Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897, close to the end of his imprisonment. Contact had lapsed between Douglas and Wilde and the latter had suffered from his close supervision, physical labour and emotional isolation. Nelson, the new prison governor, thought that writing might be more cathartic than prison labour. He was not allowed to send the long letter which he was allowed to write "for medicinal purposes"; each page was taken away when completed, and only at the end could he read it over and make revisions. Nelson gave the long letter to him on his release on 18 May 1897. Wilde entrusted the manuscript to the journalist Robert Ross (an ex-lover, and rival to "Bosie"). Ross published the letter in 1905, five years after Wilde's death, giving it the title "De Profundis" from Psalm 130. It was an incomplete version, excised of its autobiographical elements and references to the Queensberry family; various editions gave more text until in 1962 the complete and correct version appeared in a volume of Wilde's letters. In 1891 Wilde began an intimate friendship with Lord Alfred Douglas, a young, vain aristocrat. As the two grew closer, family and friends on both sides urged Wilde and Douglas to lessen their contact. Lord Alfred's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, often feuded with his son over the topic. Especially after the suicide death of his eldest son, the Viscount Drumlanrig, Queensberry privately accused them of improper acts and threatened to cut off Lord Alfred's allowance. When they refused, he began publicly harassing Wilde. In early 1895 Wilde had reached the height of his fame and success with his plays An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest on stage in London. When Wilde returned from holidays after the premieres, he found Queensberry's card at his club with the inscription: "For Oscar Wilde, posing somdomite [sic]". Unable to bear further insults and encouraged by Lord Alfred (who wanted to attack his father in every possible way), Wilde sued Queensberry for criminal libel. Wilde withdrew his claim as the defence began but the Judge deemed that Queensberry's accusation was justified. The Crown promptly issued a warrant for his arrest and he was charged with gross indecency with other men under the Labouchere Amendment in April 1895. The trial was the centre of public discussion as details of Wilde's consorts from the working class became known. Wilde refused to admit wrongdoing and the jury were unable to reach a verdict. At the retrial Wilde was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, to be held to hard labour.

Cobra, by Deon Meyer

Review Shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association International DaggerA Publishers Weekly Top 10 Mystery & Thriller for Fall“Mr. Meyer, the leading thriller writer in his native country, traffics in crime-novel situations familiar the world over: drunken cops, charming robbers, dangerous murderers, sudden violence—and sometimes, issues of race. Mr. Meyer’s South Africa, however, is unique. His books, translated from Afrikaans, are usually set in the Cape Town region, where mountains spectacularly meet the sea on the Horn of Africa. Amid these vistas his detective confronts his own—and his country’s—tortured past and the legacy of Apartheid.”—Wall Street Journal“Meyer . . . vividly depicts the story of South Africa in his novels, from the hope and turmoil of the fall of apartheid to the corrupt and desperate aspects of present-day Cape Town. . . . Meyer’s novels have an insistent forward motion, and the ones featuring Captain Griessel in particular have a pleasing relentlessness.”—Los Angeles Review of Books“An excellent South African thriller featuring one of the best ensemble casts of policemen currently pounding the crime beat.”—Deadly Pleasures“Meyer’s assured fourth Bennie Griessel thriller takes the Cape Town homicide detective to South African wine country. . . . Suspense builds as the action shifts between Griessel’s and [Cape Town pickpocket] Tyrone’s increasingly life-threatening exploits.”—Publishers Weekly“Meyer combines intricate plotting, a compelling cast, and timely themes in this fourth novel featuring Captain Benny Griessel. . . . Meyer has added another provocative novel to his impressive oeuvre.”—Booklist“A chase-themed thriller set in the tense political climate of post-apartheid South Africa. . . . As always, Meyer writes with a strong sense of character and an eye on post-apartheid politics.”—Kirkus Reviews“Deon Meyer’s series . . . grow[s] richer and more sophisticated with each new book. This progression makes Cobra the most dazzling of the bunch.”—Toronto Star“In this ninth thriller, Deon Meyer shows his mastery of the form once again. He tells a great story with suspense that doesn’t let up. Highly recommended.”—I Love a Mystery

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Another gripping, pulse-pounding winner from Meyer By "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn South African Deon Meyer is the putative giant of second-tier thrillers (but he should be first-tier!). He stays consistently at the top of my pile of crime fiction literature, and never fails to pull me in with his muscular prose and taut, thrilling plot lines, the kind of narrative that usually takes place in a narrow period of time and with a lot at stake. In COBRA (and I won't reveal *why* the title, since it is fun just getting to it!), Benny Griessel is back again, fighting his personal demons as well as the external ones.Meyer has hit on the global zeitgeist of crime in his latest book, placing technology at the center of the plot. It is also fun watching Luddite Benny Griessel struggling to get a handle on 21st century telecommunications. Meyer, while keeping pace with progress, nails down the importance of creating rich characters to engage readers. He doesn't rely on technology alone to fasten us to the story. The first pages open with murder and abduction, with the Hawks (South Africa's top police) investigating the bloody mess at a remote guesthouse. Captain Griessel lines up a team to chase down the killer and the kidnapped. The next chapter introduces us to a petty pickpocket named Tyrone, who is trying to help his sister, Nadia, pay for university. We don't know how Tyrone figures into the multiple-homicide case, but Meyer seamlessly provides a juncture for the disparate threads to connect and catapult the story into thicker and more dangerous territory.Meyer is expert at enriching the story while moving forward vertically. For new readers, the author blends in enough for you to know that Griessel is a recovering alcoholic, and providing some backstory for his current circumstances. Although Benny is a tough, strong guy with plenty of mettle, the veteran detective has some burning issues that cause him to question aspects of his nature. Meyer has created a believable, long-suffering character in Benny.I was also delighted that he included the heavy-set, sharp, sometimes-comical Captain Mbali Kaleni, the only female in the DCPI Violent Crimes team. I first met her in Thirteen Hours, a memorable character who is both sympathetic and, in the latter book, periodically the brunt of a joke. However, when it comes to fighting crime, she is a force to be reckoned with, a crackerjack detective who is decisive, authoritative, and morally unequivocal. In COBRA, we also see new facets of her character. I'd like to see Meyer write a series of books with Kaleni as the primary protagonist. If you are new to this author, I am confident that COBRA will not be your last Meyer book. If you are already a fan, your expectations will be amply met; you'll be addicted from the first page. And, the answer to all COBRA's questions aren't guaranteed until the very last page, which keeps you guessing. Meyer is at his peak without being over-the-top! And the Glossary at the back of the book is not only edifying, but enjoyable.

One of the best things about COBRA--which is a very good spy thriller--is the South African setting. I like police procedurals, and was particularly interested in the descriptions of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and its Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (the "Hawks"), as well as the interactions between SAPS and other South African law enforcement bodies (the State Security Agency (SA), and the Crime Intelligence Unit (CI)).The plot is complicated: Captain Benny Griessel (a SAPS captain, a Hawk, and a recovering alcoholic) is lead detective in the investigation of a triple homicide and apparent kidnapping. Two of the victims are highly trained bodyguards, who were hired to protect a mysterious, now-missing person (a man with a British accent who was traveling on a forged French passport under an assumed name). Bullet casings at the scene are engraved with a cobra and the letters NM--strongly suggesting that the kidnapping/homicides are the work of a hit man. When Benny and his Hawks team query Interpol about the "cobra" bullets, they learn that similar bullets are connected with a series of probable murders-for-hire committed by a known, cold-blooded individual. But when the British Consulate reluctantly provides a possible identification for the kidnapped man, everything goes south. Benny learns that the Hawks' offices and cellphones are being bugged by their own government security forces; and SAP is ordered to turn the case over to SA and CI. If it continues, Benny's investigation must go underground, and every participant's career will be in jeopardy. But continue it must, because the kidnapped man is the key to an international secret that threatens the entire world's banking system. It's a secret so important that the hit man will stop at nothing to obtain it--and the British, South African, and United States governments will likewise stop at nothing to prevent that from happening. The novel includes many up-to-the-minute references to current world events, as well as some interesting, generalized forensics material about tracking cell phones and retrieving password-protected data. There are a lot of memorable, likeable characters. To name a few, there is Benny himself, his ramrod-stiff superior (Nyathi), Benny's ranting partner (Cupido), the formidable female detective (Mbali), and the clever pickpocket (Tyrone), who makes an already-impossible situation even worse by stealing the wrong thing at the wrong time. This intricately plotted novel works well as translated from Afrikaans for English-speaking readers. It's a page-turner, with many exciting action scenes. Without question, author Deon Meyer is a true master of the spy thriller genre.Warning: COBRA contains a lot of very coarse Afrikaans language. (There is a glossary of expletives and of some Afrikaans expressions that is included in my Advance Reader's Copy. This glossary may or may not be included in the book as finally translated and published.)

Keen I love Deon Meyer's thrillers. They are terse, evocative and beautifully textured, bringing alive the people and problems of the new multiracial South Africa. The plots have pace and intrigue. This one, though, was very flat for me and I found it difficult to stay with. I see three explanations beyond my own limitations. First, the translation from the Afrikaans seems -- for me -- lacking in smoothness. It reads awkwardly. Second, the story takes far too long to take off and cohere. It's on a grander scale than Meyer's previous ones and mixes international intrigue and native killer villain. It also has a diversionary theme of the complex lovelife of the police hero, jaded, alcoloholic, fearful and anxious about the dangerous dynamics of his intense relationship with a singer, ex-alcoholic, etc. The stories don't mesh and the first hundred pages drag. Third, the key figure in the overall drama remains a cipher before he finally appears so that there is no anchor to relate to. the characters and narrative don't seem to cohere.OK, that's my review, which is the responsibility for being in the Vine program. Let me offset it by raving about Meyer's other books and suggest that if you haven't read any then Trackers and Thirteen Hours are outstanding. My own views of Cobra seem to be in a distinct minority among reviewers.

If you are a first time reader of his you might want to pick his more recognized works - Jungle Book, Kim, etc. And don't forget his poetry - it 's powerful.SCN

In 1866, (Herbert George) H.G. Wells was born to a working class family in Kent, England. Young Wells received a spotty education, interrupted by several illnesses and family difficulties, and became a draper's apprentice as a teenager. The headmaster of Midhurst Grammar School, where he had spent a year, arranged for him to return as an "usher," or student teacher. Wells earned a government scholarship in 1884, to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Normal School of Science. Wells earned his bachelor of science and doctor of science degrees at the University of London. After marrying his cousin, Isabel, Wells began to supplement his teaching salary with short stories and freelance articles, then books, including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Wells created a mild scandal when he divorced his cousin to marry one of his best students, Amy Catherine Robbins. Although his second marriage was lasting and produced two sons, Wells was an unabashed advocate of free (as opposed to "indiscriminate") love. He continued to openly have extra-marital liaisons, most famously with Margaret Sanger, and a ten-year relationship with the author Rebecca West, who had one of his two out-of-wedlock children. A one-time member of the Fabian Society, Wells sought active change. His 100 books included many novels, as well as nonfiction, such as A Modern Utopia (1905), The Outline of History (1920), A Short History of the World (1922), The Shape of Things to Come (1933), and The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind (1932). One of his booklets was Crux Ansata, An Indictment of the Roman Catholic Church. Although Wells toyed briefly with the idea of a "divine will" in his book, God the Invisible King (1917), it was a temporary aberration. Wells used his international fame to promote his favorite causes, including the prevention of war, and was received by government officials around the world. He is best-remembered as an early writer of science fiction and futurism. He was also an outspoken socialist. Wells and Jules Verne are each sometimes referred to as "The Fathers of Science Fiction".

In the days of the comet, by H.G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.
