About the Author George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which capacity he wrote many highly articulate pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. Nearly all his writings deal sternly with prevailing social problems, but have a vein of comedy to make their stark themes more palatable. Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege. He was most angered by what he perceived as the exploitation of the working class, and most of his writings censure that abuse. An ardent socialist, Shaw wrote many brochures and speeches for the Fabian Society. He became an accomplished orator in the furtherance of its causes, which included gaining equal rights for men and women, alleviating abuses of the working class, rescinding private ownership of productive land, and promoting healthy lifestyles... He is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize for Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938), for his contributions to literature and for his work on the film Pygmalion (adaption of his play of the same name), respectively.

I was most impressed with the author's ability to successfully create a colorful (as in inflection-filled) and thus dynamic commentary. As to the somewhat transparent but, as highlited in the title, central topic, socialism, I feel this book has equally shown the positive and the negative consequences of its application all the while keeping true to its satire.

An Unsocial Socialist By A Customer Shaw's last, and in my opinion, best satire, An Unsocial Socialist is a wonderful book that is sadly not well known. The plot is pulls you in and the book spawned an equally great play, "Smash". I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Brown I really enjoyed George Bernard Shaw's writing and I found this book was enlightening about socialism; both good and bad points. The characters are well developed and there are just enough twists and turns in the plot to keep it interesting. The descriptions of exporting jobs and importing goods in late nineteenth century England, and how it affects the rich and the poor, hits home for the USA today!

Wells takes us on a very entertaining and profound journey via a character named William who insists on living life nobly and thoroughly. Even as a child William had decided that this was the only aristocratic way to live and was determined to do so at all costs, and cost him it does.William gets into all sorts of hilarious trouble for living up to his ideals with a lot of it being ironic. The very people he seeks to defend or sacrifice himself for are the ones who take advantage of him, and often he finds himself subject to the logical consequences of adhering to his particular ideal. No matter what happens, he keeps pushing forward and sticking with his principles.I love H.G. Wells' works, and I think this is one of his best. Everything he writes is thought provoking, and this story provides plenty of food for thought. It takes on the subject of holding ideas vs. actually putting those ideals into practice without compromise. Even though the character, William, has problems as the result of doing this, he also lives a very full and exciting life.In a way I see this story as more of an indictment against people who don't adhere to their ideals than those who do. William certainly suffers hardships for sticking with his beliefs, but he acquires confidence and courage and lives an outstanding and adventurous life because of it. I strongly recommend this book. I enjoyed it immensely and got a lot out of it.

This is Wells at his best. The character he creates is a riot, a man who always practices what he believes. I couldn't help laughing at this guy and shaking my head, but I also admired him and must admit that I was even a bit envious of him.I often wonder if Wells was doing a caricature of himself when he wrote this book. He was also a strongly idealistic person and it got him into trouble as well. He even made the Nazi's hit list during World War II because of his beliefs. It seems his personal life would have given him plenty of ammunition to write this story. Maybe that's why it's so outstanding.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wells at his most brilliant By Ethan Parker This is a brilliant work that analyzes the tricky issue of living up to one's ideals. Wells gives us a character that takes living his beliefs to the extreme in that he follows them unwaveringly no matter how much trouble it gets him into, and it definitely gets him into trouble.This could have gone either of two ways. It could have just as easily been a tragic tale as a comedic one. I love that Wells decided to take it in a humorous direction. I really think the point he wished to make sinks in much more powerfully, because he chose to make this a humorous account. And the story is hilarious. The character gets into all sorts of ironically funny situations as the result of his insistence on following the ideology that he has embraced.Though the character gets into trouble and looks ridiculous at times, he's also very inspirational. He keeps getting back up no matter how many times he's knocked down and shows a lot of courage. He also lives a very full and amazing life. He sees and experiences things that most people only dream of because of the ideology that he adheres to. His life is one long adventure. I believe that's the way it is for anyone who refuses to let go of lofty ideals and insists on living true to them. Such a person would certainly run into trouble but also live an amazing life and grow stronger and more courageous each day.I really loved this book and just can't recommend it enough. This is Wells at his most brilliant. I absolutely loved the equally noble and silly character he created. This book really gives you a lot to think about and it makes you reassess your life. It's everything a book should be and more.

Mine included the poems, although it did not include illustrations. It includes "An Habitation Enforced", which I find cosy and heart-warming, and is one of my all-time favorite Kipling stories. Other stories: Garm-A Hostage; The Mother Hive; With the Night Mail; A Deal in Cotton; The Puzzler; The House Sugeon."Garm" is the story of a soldier and a dog in India. "With the Night Mail" is Kipling's foray into the world of Science Fiction; set in 2000 AD--- it is sooo steampunk. "The Mother Hive" is a cautionary tale of conservative wisdom. "A Deal in Cotton" is about Strickland's son's adventure in Africa. "The Puzzler" involves Penfentenyou and a Monkey Puzzle tree; grown men decide to determine empirically whether monkeys can climb Monkey Puzzles or not... "The House Surgeon" is about a haunted house and how it is cured; it is different from every other haunted house story I have read.Enjoy!

About the Author George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) is one of the world’s greatest literary figures. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he left school at fourteen and in 1876 went to London, where he began his literary career with a series of unsuccessful novels. Basically shy, Shaw created a public persona for himself: G.B.S., a bearded eccentric, crusading social critic, antivivisectionist, language reformer, strict vegetarian, and renowned public speaker. The author of fifty-three plays, hundreds of essays, reviews, and letters, and several books, Shaw is best known for Widowers’ Houses (1892), Mrs. Warren’s Profession (1893), Arms and the Man (1894), Caesar and Cleopatra (1898), Man and Superman (1903), Major Barbara (1905), Pygmalion (1913), Heartbreak House (1919), and Saint Joan (1923). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925.

An early social comedy by Shaw on the horrors of war By Lawrance Bernabo George Bernard Shaw takes the title for this play from the opening life of Virgil's epic poem the "Aeneid," which begins "Of arms and the man I sing." Virgil glorified war and the heroic feats of Aeneas on the battlefield. However, Shaw's purpose in this play is to attack the romantic notion of war by presenting a more realistic depiction of war, devoid of the idea that such death and destruction speaks to nobility. Still, "Arms and the Man" is not an anti-war drama, but rather a satirical assault on those who would glorify the horrors or war.Shaw develops an ironic contrast between two central characters. The play begins with accounts of the glorious exploits of Major Sergius Saranoff, a handsome young Bulgarian officer, in a daring cavalry raid, which turned the war in favor of the Bulgarians over the Serbs. In contrast, Captain Bluntschil, a professional soldier from Switzerland, acts like a coward. He climbs up to a balcony to escape capture, he threatens a woman with a gun, and he carries chocolates rather than cartridges because he claims the sweets are more useful on the battlefield.In the eyes of Raina Petkoff, the young romantic idealist who has bought into the stories of battlefield heroism, Saranoff is her ideal hero. However, as the play proceeds, we learn more about this raid and that despite its success, it was a suicidal gesture that should have failed. Eventually Saranoff is going to end up dead if he continues to engage in such ridiculous heroics. Meanwhile, we realize that Bluntshcil has no misconceptions about the stupidity of war and that his actions have kept him alive."Arms and the Man" is an early play by Shaw, first performed in 1894, the same year he wrote "Mrs. Warren's Profession." The ending is rather tradition for comedies of the time, with all the confusion between the lovers finally getting cleared up and everybody paired up to live happily ever after. The choice of a young woman as the main character, who ultimately rejects her romantic ideals to live in the real world, is perhaps significant because serving in the army and going to war is not going to happen. Consequently, her views are not going to be colored by questions of courage in terms of going to war herself. I also find it interesting that this play understands the horrors of war given that it was the horrors of World War I that generally killed the romantic notion of war in Britain.

By A Customer This play particularly wins you over if you see it performed live with a particularly acerbic, not too tall Bluntschli--it is a romantic farce that critiques Romanticism (but ends up in love with it, although in a roundabout way) and embraces early 20th c Realism and Capitalism, all through some fairly simple but very captivating characters. Good social sendup, a Shaw for people who still have soft hearts and want a quick read.

Like the chocolate cream soldier - tasty and satisfying By Bonnie A starving, exhausted soldier running for his life bursts into a young woman's room, finds outrage, criticism, solace, chocolate creams, and unexpected love -and that's just the opening scene. This clever, witty, subtle, and surprising treat from the author of Pygmalion still holds up well more than 100 years after its writing. Shaw fashions the subjects of false ideals, heroism, romanticism, and the fake glories of war into a well-constructed farce which sustains through the very last line. Can't wait to see a new production of the play, and a great read meanwhile....

I'd been dying for a good, 'intelligent' yet fluffy chick-lit for a while, and what lands in my review inbox? This book! Hallelujah!Have you read or watched The Devil Wears Prada? Well, Yes, Chef! is pretty much TDWP but set in the world of kitchens, restaurants, and chefs as opposed to fashion.I'll admit that had I not read Anthony Bourdain's 'Kitchen Confidential', I would've thought this book and its storyline totally over the top. I mean seriously - do we ever imagine restaurant kitchens to be such sexed-up places? Uhm, no...not exactly... But it's the truth, and the fact that Ms. Joy has worked in those same shoes as Becca and seen/experienced/viewed that world with her own two eyes adds a huge level of realism and grit and just oh-my-goodness factor to this story!I love a good tale where the heroine has a journey to get along to, and no story does this better than chick-lit (yes, I'm calling this chick-lit as opposed to the rom-com tag it's gotten everywhere!). You know there's going to be something deep and life-altering, but it's all done in the midst of lightness and laughter, of (sometimes) tears and ranting and just plain b*tching.Lisa Joy hits all those good notes in her book...or should I say she brings the best blend of ingredients to give a soul-satisfying read all while zinging your funny-ness tastebuds.I definitely, definitely recommend this book! Love rom-coms or chick lit or kitchen madness-type stories? Then this is the book for you! It's very devour-able, I swear!

It's written in first person, which usually isn't my thing but it really worked for me here. Becca is a woman in a rut trying to work out what she wants to do with her life. She works in a call center for a bunch of high flying restaurants owned by a nightmare Gordon Ramseyesque gargoyle, Damien Malone who terrifies everyone in his wake. It's not long into the plot that she's Shanghaid into being the man's PA and gets caught up in his crazy life.I genuinely enjoyed the black humor in this book, the narratorial voice was immediately one that clicked with me and the characters felt incredibly real.I don't read so much for escapism as to step into another world and this book took me there. Although I know nothing about the restaurant game, I felt like I'd learned a little more by the end of this story (in a good way!). More importantly, I found it super easy to relate to Becca trying to work out what she wanted in her life and more importantly, who she wanted in her life. It's something I think everyone goes through at some stage and the way Ms. Joy wrote Becca's conflict and the insight given along the way about the restaurant industry kept me hooked right to the end.If you want a fun, sometimes hilarious read that doesn't shave off the sharp edges, this is a story for you. Definite five stars from me.

If you ever watched and enjoyed one of those Gordon Ramsey restaurant shows on Food Network, then this is one book you should read. The best part of the book is it’s authenticity, as most of it was based on Lisa Joy’s real experiences in the exciting world of the gourmet empire. Becca Stone is a great character who is often funny, sassy and holds her own against the her boss from hell, professional chef Damien. There are some heart warming moments when Becca realizes what she really wants wasn’t what she thought it was and go after her hearts desire-but no spoilers, you will have to find out for yourself. “Yes, Chef” was thoroughly entertaining book full of jet setting and celebrity chefs. It is a must read for any foodie or romance junkie and laughing out loud is guaranteed. I devoured this book in one sitting because I could not get enough of it. For me, it was the perfect summer read and I can’t wait to see what Lisa Joy comes up with next.

About the Author Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on January 29, 1860, in Taganrog, Russia, the third of six children. His father ran a grocery store and was physically abusive. His mother was a wonderful storyteller. Young Anton attended a school for Greek boys and sang in the choir at the Greek Orthodox Monastery. His father went bankrupt in 1876 and fled to Moscow to avoid prison, leaving Anton behind to sell their belongings and finish his education, which he financed by tutoring and selling goldfinches that he had caught himself. Then he began writing for newspapers. In 1879 he entered medical school in Moscow, becoming a physician in 1884. During his career as a doctor, he treated the poor for free, making most of his money from writing. In 1885, he began showing signs of tuberculosis. Devoting much time to writing plays, he suffered a major lung hemorrhage in 1897, then a year later, his father died and he moved his mother and sister into a house that he built in Yalta. In 1901, Chekhov married Olga Knipper, but he lived in Moscow while he remained in Yalta. Chekhov died on July 15, 1904, from tuberculosis, at the age of 44, in Badenweiler, Germany. He drank a glass of champagne, turned over on his side and passed quietly away. His body was transported back to Moscow inside a refrigerated boxcar filled with oysters. During his funeral, thousands of mourners mistakenly followed the procession of the wrong man. He is buried next to his father.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Us on a skewer, for all time By D. J. Leedham Chekhov is a great master of Russian literature. But somehow I'd not gotten round to reading him. This very inexpensive collection proved to be a real find. I happen to appreciate the translation. Though there have been more literal and more deeply researched translations since. This works for me because the slightly antiquated translation reflects the time and sensibility of the writer. In this sense the more contemporary translations are anachronistic and ring false. He prefers to write vignettes for his short stories. Each one a very sharp beautifully articulated account of a particular sensibility or human foible in response to some particular circumstance. His linguistic mastery survives translation better than some great Russians. He is truly a universal and timeless observer ... of us. And a deeply satisfying read. Again and again.

By Devon Jones In addition it has "A Transgression", "A Tragic Actor", "The First-Class Passenger" as the comical highlights of the book. "In Exile" "Misery" and "A Nervous Breakdown", which are very good. Overall, I am very pleased. Since I've started reading Anton Chekhov's stories I've wanted to have a Russian ascent so, I can properly pronounce each name and say "plague take you!" how his characters do.

CHEKHOV A MASTER OF SHORT STORIES By Hari N.Spanou I chose the book because I feel that as a reader, I have "gaps" in classic literature.Chekhov's short stories seemed a good way to start 'filling the gap''of Russian literature.I enjoyed the short stories, because he is a master of character building in a background atmosphere of his era.

Cristina Grabiel Bridges to Cuba is a collection of art, poetry, personal essays, and fiction written by Cubans on both sides of the straits of Florida. A magnificent attempt to bring together all who are Cuban by birth, to share the complexities of what it has been like to be separated these many years. The submissions in this book capture magnificently the diversity of experiences, thoughts, emotions and conflicts caused by the separation of Cubans from each other, and for many, from the land of their birth. Having been born in Cuba and having lived in the U.S. for the last forty years, the contributions in this book spoke personally to me in a way that nothing I have ever read before has done. But the beauty of this book and the gift Behar has given, is to present the challenges and emotional depth of separation that all us feel in our lives. Each contribution gives us a different perspective, a unique view of the subject, and a deeper understanding of what it is like to be separated from that and those which we love.Ruth, thank you.

Relevant and Revealing By kubanna It has been over ten years already since this anthology was first published, but the writings, photos, art, and interviews contained within it are still as stimulating, inspiring and necessary as when Behar's beautifully edited book first came out. Despite what was hoped for in the mid-90's, relations between Cuba and the United States have worsened and it seems that the possibility for dialogue between the two countries has narrowed even further. But at least we have the dialogue that Behar has so elegantly revealed in this volume.Bridges to Cuba presents a diversity of perspectives in an attempt to piece back together the fragments of what politics and exile have divided. An excellent interview with poet Nancy Morejon succinctly summarizes this project. Morejon says, "the miracle that we could hold a conversation. That we could confront each other. Without imposing exile as a precondition, and without us imposing the precondition of being revolutionary islanders... it was only through [Cuban] culture that we could establish those links, recognize each other" (134).The conversations are physical, between Cubans on the island and exiled Cubans, as well as intertextual. Fundamentally, however, this book converses with the reader, challenging his or her notions of the Cuba that resides in the popular imagination. Until the embargo is lifted, this book is the closest the average American reader can get to Cuba.
