Well organized and insightful summary of The Nightingale By Amazon Customer As a co-facilitator of a book discussion group, I use these summary type books as a guide to help me organize the meetings. I like the way the chapters are broken down and include study questions, analysis and important terms and characters. The glossary/character list is an excellent quick reference tool to assist in conversation about each one. This is a very well done guide and I find it to be not only useful, but insightful as well.

By Jamie These review studies help me a lot when I want to get a deeper understanding of the novel I'm reading. This one in particular is was especially insightful with many observations and ideas about the characters, the relationships between them and the world/situation, and the subtext therein. Each chapter is broken down and easily digestible for whenever you can spare a minute to read. I think this would be a valuable book for any student or book lover who just wants to get a fuller experience of The Nightingale. Great job to the author.

I liked the original and I was looking for something that would show me more about the book, and this in depth analysis was really great at demystifying so many parts of it for me. I liked how it discusses various chapters and themes in the story, and I got to know the characters and what really drives them even better with this one. I was definitely surprised at how much it has furthered my understanding of the novel. Thumbs up for this one, and I am glad I found it.

Wells is known best by his Science Fiction—War of the Worlds, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, and other classics—but he also wrote stories that more properly fit in the "Literature" genre. The New Machiavelli seems to fall into this category.I very much dislike "Literature." This genre has produced many great stories, but so many stories of this genre that I've read seemed boring and pointless, a slice of life best left uncovered. For the most part, this story is no exception. To me, Wells was a genius as a writer, and it shows here, but his tendency to belabor even the smallest observations about his characters, his scenes, or topographical areas leads to a tedium that encourages the reader to put the book down and go watch a movie.With his writing, Wells has the ability to make it all seem real, to often bring the reader to tears, or to make him laugh out loud. This story contains all of that, and some high-flown emotional language into the bargain. Wells held nothing back. That's part of the problem; but it also gives the reader some good moments as well.The most tedious part was the first half of the story. It's written in an autobiographical style (whether based on Wells's actual life, or made up, I have no idea). The interesting part is the childhood, but when it starts into his adulthood, it concerns itself tediously with politics. He's mostly immersed in Socialism of early 1900s England, and uses disturbing Socialist ideas like, "...serve that end, to subdue the undisciplined worker and undisciplined weath to it..." or "An uneducated, underbred, and underfed propertyless man is a man who has lost the possibility of liberty...A man who is swimming hopelessly for life wants nothing but the liberty to get out of the water; he'll give every other liberty away for it—until he gets out."But about halfway through the story Wells's character discovers that it all seems false to him, his way of life, his political views, his marriage, and he switches to the Opposition. This is where the story becomes more interesting. He uses phrases like, "We Liberals have done more mischief through well-intentioned benevolence than all the selfishness in the world could have done."The story ends without a firm resolution of what he is to do with the rest of his life. He's with his mistress—itself an episode extremely well told, as he wars with himself about the propriety and the scandal of it—and they are leaving London, his home, perhaps forever. He has regrets, and he has a bit of joy about the future, and the story leaves it there. In fact, the last few chapters of the story almost make the reading of the story worth while.I rate this one at three out of five stars. I wouldn't read it again, but reading Wells is an experience, and I'm glad I didn't miss this one.

Michelle Davis I anxiously awaited the sequel to part 1 and unfortunately upon completion I did not have the overall feeling of satisfaction that I felt at the end of pt. 1. The situationship that Smoke and Karreuche were involved in was seemingly endless causing the reader to have a feeling of tedium while reading. Geek and Tommy were plain and simple a--holes. They have absolutely no redeeming qualities and if the truth be told should have been ousted from the crew long ago. I thought Smoke was a lot smarter than his actions showed in the book. The fact that he was sleeping with the enemy and was unable to pick up any negative or bad vibes from her spoke volumes to me. Even Shantinka was leary of Tango upon meeting her and she plainly stated she was a snake up to no good. Karreuche, Karreuche, Karreuche, when she continued to deal with Geek after she became aware of his marital status I lost a little bit of respect for her. Not only did she allow herself to be regulated to the sidelines as a sidepiece, but on top of that she willingly accepted his physical abuse. How or Why she felt it necessary to stick by a man that constantly physically, mentally, and spiritually abuse her person was mind boggling to me. She left the blinders on so long that when she finally became aware of what was happening in her face she consciously chose to continue in this toxic relationship. While I totally disliked the Draya character, Karreuche deserved that a-- kicking and then some. The fact that she had a friend like Shatinka who was willing to speak plain truth without sugar cxoatinf or downplaying the error of Karreuche's ways was extremely rewarding.

Plewse , please, please, why is Eyana getting away with murders. I can't believe she killed Kareem and now she was able to kill her lover Brad and dump his death on CheChe. Please let her go in part 3. Another one deserving karma is Tangi. The girls were worse than the men. Just crazy set-ups and beat downs. I'm sorry I don't like Draya, but I'm happy she gave Geek and CheChe a nice mace filled beating. CheChe may be young, but she should know better than to cheatb with a married man. She was a weak side chick. I'm glad she moved on with Dale, but rooting for her and Smoke. I really hope she matures in part 3. She had to stand up for herself and put Tangi, Draya and Eyana in their place. Especially if she's hooking up with Smoke. She needs to hook up with Lala and get schooled. Aw Geek so disappointed me. I thought maybe, his character would have some explanation about Draya. I so was not expecting this, but not surprised. Him and Tommy deserve a slow painful exit. I hope Shauntika is OK. Wow! The ending with CheChe's mom. Like wow! I'm so geeking for part 3!!! Lucinda hurry up!!!!

Tommy was no better I can't wait for them to get theirs. I'm happy that CheChe was showing some growth and hopefully she'll find her happily ever after. That ending was like whoa! It's true that his name is still one of the most easily recognizable in the literary world, but since his death in 1946 his contributions to mainstream writing, feminism, and politics (he wrote the United Nations charter) have been all but forgotten--instead he has simply become known as a "science fiction writer," a reputation based on a handful of novels written early in his career. Books like "The Time Machine" and "The War of the Worlds" are indeed marvelous, and are the key texts in the development of modern science fiction; but to limit Wells's accomplishment to these books borders on calumny. Wells was one of the major writers of the past hundred years, with an oeuvre so vast and varied a reader could spend a lifetime working through it all. There is truly something for everyone in the work of H.G. Wells."The Wheels of Chance" is a classic example. This pitch-perfect tale of a Mr. Hoopdriver, who undertakes a bicycling tour of the English countryside, has to be one of the most charming light novels ever written. Mr. Hoopdriver's holiday from his job as a draper's assistant (a job Wells himself held in his youth) becomes a kind of lighthearted spiritual quest, as he meets and falls in love with the rebellious Jessie Milton ("the Lady in Grey"), an early "New Woman"--a proto-feminist, one might say--whose daring elopement with a much older man has gone disastrously awry. Can Mr. Hoopdriver save her? Can Jessie salvage her reputation? These questions are answered in a tale which combines glorious descriptions of the pastoral England of a century ago with uproarious scenes of early bicycling and bicyclists. And yet this "Bicycling Idyll," as it is subtitled, also carries with it a genuine poignancy--we are always aware that the characters' journey must eventually end, just as, with the coming of the automobile, the world Wells described here ended."The Wheels of Chance" is brief, easy-to-read, and highly memorable. Indeed, it is surprising that this fast-moving, picaresque novel has never been filmed--a company like Merchant-Ivory could do a glorious job with it. This comes through well in his Wheels of Chance, his first novel published in 1896. The plot has appeal, but the greater appeal of this book is its social history of cycling in Britain.In 2006, as a cyclist and author, I rode from Lands End to John o'Groats - the length of Britain. I frequently thought what a wonderful country Britain would have been pre all those dreadful M roads. H.G. Wells tells, superbly, what it was like.This is a much quoted book amongst 21st-century cyclists. For me it was great to read all the familiar quotes within their intended context. Wheels of Chance is a book for every cyclists' book shelf. Thankfully cyclists are typically prolific readers.

The language is difficult at times, but the laughs are huge. An interesting window into Victorian morality and social status in these early days of cycling.

A prolific writer, Defoe is known to have used at least 198 pen names over the course of a career in which he produced more than five hundred written works. Defoe is best-known for his novels detailing the adventures of the castaway Robinson Crusoe, which helped establish and popularize the novel in eighteenth century England. In addition to Robinson Crusoe, Defoe penned other famous works including Captain Singleton, A Journal of the Plague Year, Captain Jack, Moll Flanders and Roxana. Defoe died in 1731.

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

I am not a literary giant by any stretch, so you'll have to take my word, when I take the time to give some odd book on Amazon, that is 100 years old a 5 star rating. This book is best heard and read at the same time. (if you can, download the audio for free at librovox) For what it is, its 5 stars. And (dont start a sentence with and) It is a book about literary taste!! Make no mistake about it, its just that. A manual, of its time. Which to me, adds even another level of interest. The added bonus (no pun intended) was the list of books he tells you to get and the amounts of each book. Then he adds them up and tells you what a proper man should have for a literary start & the total costs, etc. After all, this is 100 years ago, so he certainly wasnt talking to women. 104 years; to be exact. Oh...It's a touch dry, for 2013. HA

He encourages his readers to dive into the old classics of English literature and modern works too. There are only two flaws I can think of: A) The UK-centric pricing is way out of date and B) there is some semi-annoying provincialism.
