George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. Originally earning his way as an influential London music and theatre critic, Shaw's greatest gift was for the modern drama. Strongly influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he successfully introduced a new realism into English-language drama. He wrote more than 60 plays, among them Man and Superman, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Pygmalion. With his range from biting contemporary satire to historical allegory, Shaw became the leading comedy dramatist of his generation and one of the most important playwrights in the English language since the 17th century.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A funny tale with a twist By Israel Drazin In this is a one act comedy, a lover is a very handsome youth who just turned age 18. He is fatuous and passionately and deeply in love with a married woman aged 37, who is not at all pretty. He wrote her adoring poems that she only glanced at. She lost the poems. Her sister-in-law who dislikes her found them and gave them to her brother, the woman's husband. The play explores what happens next. Among other things, the boy and the wife tell each other that they were drawn to each other when they saw George Bernard Shaw's play Candida. Readers who are familiar with Candida will recognize that the plot in this play is similar in some respects to the earlier play. Both plays explore the reactions of a husband to such a situation. This is not the only time that Shaw introduces himself into a play; he wrote elsewhere that he liked to quote himself.
