Thomas Hardy, OM, was an English author of the naturalist movement, although in several poems he displays elements of the previous romantic and enlightenment periods of literature, such as his facination with the supernatural. He regarded himself primarily as a poet and composed novels mainly for financial gain. The bulk of his work, set mainly in the semi-fictional land of Wessex, delineates characters struggling against their passions and circumstances. Hardy's poetry, first published in his 50s, has come to be as well regarded as his novels, especially after The Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The term cliffhanger is considered to have originated with Thomas Hardy's serial novel A Pair of Blue Eyes in 1873. In the novel, Hardy chose to leave one of his protagonists, Knight, literally hanging off a cliff staring into the stony eyes of a trilobite embedded in the rock that has been dead for millions of years. This became the archetypal — and literal — cliff-hanger of Victorian prose.

Wessex tales, by Thomas Hardy

From Library Journal Hardy tests the skill of any narrator. Not only must the reader dramatize differences of age, sex, region, and class among the characters who inhabit the fictional county of Wessex in the last century, but the straight narration must also showcase the eloquence of Hardy's prose. Vincent Brimble manages all this with ease. Which is fortunate, since the seven uneven tales here might seem downright dull in print. The first and best piece, "The Three Strangers," pulls out all the stops: a violent storm on the downs, three mysterious strangers who seek shelter in a shepherd's cabin where a rousing christening party is in progress, and the booming of a cannon to announce the escape of a prisoner nearby. In other stories (e.g., "Fellow Townsmen") the characters seem wooden, with plots turning too much on coincidence. Woven through all, however, are lively descriptions of life in Somerset 50 years or so before Hardy's time: accounts of milking cows all day in a dark dairy ("The Withered Arm"), smuggling tubs of brandy over the cliffs ("The Distracted Preacher"), and preparing for the anticipated invasion of Napoleon ("A Tradition of 1804"). Recommended for classic literature collections.Jo Carr, Sarasota, Fla.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Hardy's novels, in my experience (admittedly a long time ago, when I was going through a serious misery-lit phase), are emotional marathons. They leave you drained, desolate, in shock but ultimately satisfied that you finished the course. Ever since listening to Clare Tomalin's biography, The Time-torn Man, I've been meaning to dig out Tess, Jude, Bathsheba, Eustacia and the rest of the Wessex clan, but it will be a mission. I need an incentive. Here it is. Five minutes into the second tale, The Three Strangers, you can feel the old Hardy magic beginning to work its spell. The scene has been set, where else but on his favourite stamping ground (trudging ground might be a better word), the bare, dark, rain-sodden, wind-lashed heath five miles from Casterbridge (Dorchester to you), where 'the tails of little birds trying to roost on some scraggy thorn were blown inside out like umbrellas'. In a small, lonely hut, shepherd Fennel, his dairymaid wife and 19 guests are celebrating the birth of a new baby beside a crackling fire with mead, victuals, music and dancing. Then comes a knock at the door. 'Walk in!' cries our merry host, the latch clicks and in comes a stranger, 'dark in complexion and not unprepossessing as to feature', hat 'hung low over his eyes', which take in the room 'with a flash more than a glance' and like what they see. 'The rain is so heavy, friends, that I ask leave to come in and rest awhile,' he says in a deep, rich voice. Leave is given and a pull of the mead mug, and minutes later there's another knock, and in comes a second dripping stranger, who turns out to be the hangman on his way to Casterbridge to top a sheep-stealer in the morning. I'd forgotten what a consummate yarn-spinner Hardy is. Roald Dahl's end-of-story twists are famous, but Hardy's tales surprise you all the way through, holding your attention as firmly as old Solomon Selby does his audience's at the tavern in A Tradition of 1804. As soon as they see him take his pipe from his mouth and smile into the fire from his inglenook seat, they know what's coming. 'The smile was neither mirthful nor sad, not precisely humorous nor altogether thoughtful. We who knew him recognised it in a moment. It was his narrative smile.' And thus begins the wonderful tale of young Selby's encounter on a Wessex clifftop with Old Boney himself, recce-ing the long-planned invasion of England with one of his Frenchie generals. Next stop, The Return of the Native. --Sue Arnold - The GuardianOriginally published in 1888, Hardy's classic collection of short tales set in early 19th-century Southwest England examines the lives of everyday folk, many of whom go through otherworldly occurrences. Neville Jason deftly narrates this audio edition. With only minor shifts in tone, Jason lends each character a distinct voice that is easily recognisable to listeners. Additionally, Jason's narration possesses an eloquence that will delight listeners and transport them to another time and place where the magical was indeed possible. While the book's language may seem dated to some listeners, Jason does his best to incorporate a slightly modern approach into his performance, and this brings a sense of immediacy to the stories. An enjoyable listen from start to finish and a must for Hardy fans. --Publishers WeeklyHardy's collection of stories takes place in an imaginative locale, Wessex, based on the area around the author's home in Dorchester, England. Combining the real with the imagined, Hardy unfurls the ironies of everyday life; his introduction gives the listener an appreciation of what is to come. Neville Jason, an experienced actor and reader, is virtually flawless in rendering these vignettes. His diction, pacing, and inflection are spot-on, glorifying these tales of love, death, and the seeming supernatural and presenting the listener with a veritable audio Masterpiece Theatre. The dialogue is rendered as ably as the narrative. --Michael T. Fein, Central Virginia Community College, Lynchburg

About the Author Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in Dorchester, Dorset. He enrolled as a student in King s College, London, but never felt at ease there, seeing himself as socially inferior. This preoccupation with society, particularly the declining rural society, featured heavily in Hardy s novels, with many of his stories set in the fictional county of Wessex. Since his death in 1928, Hardy has been recognised as a significant poet, influencing The Movement poets in the 1950s and 1960s.

Spectacular Stories By HardyBoy64 I'm convinced that Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest writers in the English language because he mastered so many different literary genres. He was a master poet, and his novels have received great attention, as they should have. His short stories, however, seem to have received less attention, which is a shame. These stories are beautiful examples of how well-written literature can capture the fragility of life, affairs of the heart, and human sentiments which Hardy masterfully couches in the cultural and regional traditions and lifestyles. My favorite story here is called "Fellow-townsmen" where Hardy shows us town life mixed with love and the many regrets associated with it. These are stories of hangings, mystic manifestations, ghost-like appearances, foreigners and smugglers all in the English rural landscape of Wessex. Hardy portrays the ever-changing life in this countryside through characters whose lives are like flower blooms blown around in the Wessex wind.Highly Recommended reading! Also read the other collection of short stories by Hardy called "Life's Little Ironies".

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Immersive By Deb An excellent anthology of tales from yore. I used to think that O'Henry (nee William Sidney Porter) specialized in the 'twist in the tale', also called 'O'Henry twist'. But now I'd say Hardy beats him hollow. The bonus is the usual rich description of locale - the land, the flora & the fauna, the distinctive characteristics of the people (both physical and as to the disposition). Once you get the taste, Hardy has this uncanny ability to keep you mesmerized; even in tales which are not 'mystery stories' in the conventional sense, a Hardy tale is as good as (or better than) any page turner. It keeps your attention riveted, and you can almost feel the terrain and the people as if walking around you...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Brilliant Storyteller By CJA I read a couple of Hardy's novels 40 years ago and forgot just how good this guy is. He can write short stories too. They tend to be leisurely affairs, longer and more deliberate than you commonly find in this post-Hemingway world. But after a slow beginning he draws you in and you are hooked. Sometimes there is a surprise ending; usually there is some emotional wallop at the end. His heroes tend to be common rural folk and he likes to set his stories in the early 1800s, though the collection was published in 1888.For the most part, Hardy is a critic of conventional morality and social constraints. As a consequence, his stories play well to the modern reader.Magnificent work.

The chief purpose of this book is, if fortune helps, to entertain people interested in the kind of narratives here collected. For the sake of orderly arrangement, the stories are classed in different grades, as they advance from the normal and familiar to the undeniably startling. At the same time an account of the current theories of Apparitions is offered, in language as free from technicalities as possible. According to modern opinion every "ghost" is a "hallucination," a false perception, the perception of something which is not present.

I don't like browsing kindle books and not being able to know if I might want to read or not based on the reviews and the description. From the little I have read, the book tells stories about ghosts but not ghost stories. It's not about horror stories, just tells about people who saw a ghost and what they did... Anyway, here is a description I took from the paper back version:A bocan was not the only inhabitant of the spirit-world that Donald Ban encountered during his lifetime. A cousin of his mother was said to have been carried off by the fairies, and one night Donald saw him among them, dancing away with all his might. -from "Donald's Hymn" Not merely an assortment of spooky ghost stories suitable for a foggy Halloween night-though it is certainly that as well-this is a history of the ghost story told from the perspectives of mythology and anthropology. Written by one of the late 19th century's foremost experts on folklore and first published in 1897, this is an early scientific study of the occult that features some of the best-documented ghost stories from the history of humanity. The chilling case studies examine:.the deathbed of Louis XIV.the restraining hand.the wraith of the czarina.Sir George Villiers' ghost.the slaying of Sergeant Davies.the dream that knocked at the door.the lady in black.the dancing devil.and many, many more.About the author:Scottish journalist and author ANDREW LANG (1844-1912), the son of the sheriff-clerk of rural Selkirkshire, was educated at Edinburgh Academy, the Universities of St. Andrews and Glasgow, and Balliol College, Oxford. A contemporary and friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, he produced a stunning variety and number of volumes, including books of poetry, novels, children's books, histories, and biographies, as well as criticism, essays, scholarly works of anthropology, and translations of classical literature.

It was fascinating to read Andrew Lang's "other" interests (besides folk and fairy tales). This read a bit dry and was not "stories," but mindset of the day and retellings of actual sightings and events of people in the late 1800's and earlier. There was nothing spooky about it, as it was written very matter-of-factly. Interesting, but not a quick read. Curious people and thoughtful (thinking) people who wonder about such things could benefit from its contents.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Ehh... By andrea freeman I'm not going to say this book was horrible because it wasn't but some of the things that happened were over the top. The last few chapter felt rushed. On minute Hakim's crazy and he's forcing her to leave with him but then out the blue he has a change of heart? Then all the cheating for absolutely no reason. Then the baby momas. It swas just to much in such a little time frame. Also for them to be older women both of them are just as naïve as younger women.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well By L. S. Washington Everyone got their love in the end. It was a little much to take in with all the different relatives coming out of the wood work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Gang is All Back By Tierra The Gang is back and with so much more drama. Everyone this time has crazy ex or baby mama drama, a few murders and a lot of trust issues. The love Hakim has for Paige is stronger than ever so much so he goes way off the deep in. Paige however has found a new love interest after finding about Hakim's little secret. Hope and Eric go through their drama. Eric finds himself in a predicament that leads him with almost ruining his life. Hope is still the same loyal girlfriend she has been, so much so that she still ends up loving all of Eric's baggage. With so much dirty Laundry being aired, somewhere along the lines they all find it within each to make a mends. It was a definitely a Thin Line.

I read the first book and was left wondering what had happened later. The book is written in such a descriptive tone that I felt like I was watching a movie while reading.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Another timeless classic. By Bill Bickley This is Dafoe's sequel to his Robinson Crusoe novel. This is an excellent story that some say is based on an actual person. I encourage readers to read Robinson Crusoe first and then this book. This is another terrific book to share with younger family members. What a great way to interest children in classic fiction. Definitely worth two thumbs up!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Redundant By Cg35 Ok, not near as captivating as his first Robinson Crusoe adventure on the island. I'm having difficulty finishing the book because he just goes "on and on" with the same stuff in a different setting. Two chapters are devoted entirely to religion being preached to the reader through the characters. That has its place but if I wanted a book on religion I would have purchased one in the religious section. I like his writing style very much but he ran out of fresh material...something like trying to do a good movie sequel and somewhat failing at it.

Angel and Raquel possess two very strong personalities separately. They are alphas to the core. The problem comes when these two fire-filled individuals come together. One needs to be in control while the other refuses to be controlled. Angel Leonetti, the complete Alpha Male “Let me first address this ‘using you’ shit that you mentioned. To be clear, I asked you to be on the team for no other reason but that I trust you. You were actually the only one I trusted in that meeting, besides my father. I don’t know what’s up with Victor. I haven’t a clue where the hostility he displayed stemmed from, but, best believe, if he says anything to me again, I won’t hold back. He has you to thank for him breathing without assistance right now. Consider this his reprieve.” Angel moved closer to her, as he continued, “And that ultimatum bullshit you just spat at me; that’s not an option. I’m growing tired of repeating myself. I’ve told you already that you are who and what I want. I won’t say it again.” Raquel Waters, the uncontrollable Alpha Female… No matter how she felt about him, how much she wanted him, she wasn’t taking his controlling caveman ways lightly. “You are so full of shit! You and I haven’t seen or spoken to each other in three years; three-long-years. You know nothing about me, and I don’t know shit about you. All I can say is that we know how to fuck each other’s brains out with a skill that should be taught to the masses, but that’s it. So what!” She moved closer to him. “I went away and grew up. I have likes and dislikes that you have no clue exist. So if you think I’m just going to sit here and let you claim me without me having something to say about it, you’re sadly mistaken.” Angel can’t live without this woman. He refuses to. He’s determined to have her no matter what. Raquel equally has a need that only Angel can fulfill. She wants him, there’s no doubt about that. However, she doesn’t want to sacrifice who she is to get what she wants. Will Angel be able to break down the walls of the woman he’s desired since the moment they met? Will Raquel be able to surrender her free will for the man that has managed to dominated her mind, body, and soul? Can these two find a way to be together or will their fire consume them both?

I have to strongly urge readers to please read Desired the first book first!!!!! Loved Drake and Georgia's story but this book is all Angel and his other half Raquel. A lot of questions were answered especially regarding why the relationship between Angel and his brother Eddie was broken. S.K Lessly did a tremendous job and this book was worth the wait. If you read other books by this author you will truly get a treat as she has included two other favorite characters Max & Mason West from RUINED!!!! How she was able to incorporate them into book was just awesome. Loved it, Loved it, Loved it!!!

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Took Forever.... By TJ7109md This book is my least favorite by this author. The first half was so repetitive and regurgitated that it took me days just to get past the 50% mark hence my three stars. I mean how many times does one have to read about Angel and Roxy going at each other then dirtying up the sheets - the dialogue and storyline just seemed so redundant at times. Thankfully the story started to turn (for the better) when the real action started. One thing for sure, after all the gun fire someone please tell me why Hugo was still left standing. I also like to read the back story about Mason and Maxine and read more about my favorite alpha Drake.

Even her love scenes are full of beautifully written metaphors. No need for explicit words and descriptions. Its still great chemistry. My ONLY complaint is.... I have to wait for the next installlment. I'd rather pay more for a full book then wait weeks for the next part. Authors need to think that some readers like me .... read alot. So sometimes, alot of times, I forget all about a new part of a book, because I've moved on to something else. Anyhoo, I'm anxious to know how this will all turn out. I'm just frustrated that it will not be today.

I want no need the kind of love that Elias has for Natalie. I mean what woman wouldn't want a man to love her that much. At the same time I can understand Natalie being a little hesitant about Elias's love for her it does come as a bit overwhelming. I'm so glad that Natalie is starting to see the light now. And Solomon?! Shoot that fool can go to help as far as I'm concerned. Can't wait till the next installment comes out.

Eli and Allie's marriage and then the immediate problems was so heartbreaking. The reveal about Solomon's real job was a shocker. I knew he had an agenda, but I was not expecting his actual role. This story took us down another fox hole that appeared to have to ending. Again , I liked the extra characters to add more meat to the story. Allie's sister, mother and his family added the extra depth.

Like all of them (and the short stories) it is near impossible to put down, and leaves you awestruck at Holmes's genius. Doyle's writing style is extremely impressive as always, his characters seem so very real! This book is believable, a true masterpiece of mystery literature, and in the top tier of the long list of the great English detective stories. It just doesn't get any better than this. Even the long section without Holmes and Watson in it ("The Scowers") is enjoyable to read, and not boring (unlike the Mormon part in a Study In Scarlet). Highly reccommended.

By Mary Whipple The last of the four complete Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Valley of Fear gives the reader two plots for the price of one. More accustomed to writing short stories than well-developed novels, Doyle creates two story lines, only loosely connecting them. He then throws Moriarty, the arch-villain, into the mix, though Moriarty was killed off in a previous novel. In the first plot, which directly involves Sherlock Holmes, a letter warns, in code, that something dreadful will happen at Birlstone, an ancient manor house surrounded by a forty-foot moat. Before Holmes can act, however, the owner, Jack Douglas, is found shot to death, his face destroyed in the blast from a sawed-off shotgun. Douglas was an American, and the nature of his death and the weapon "proves" to the local police that the killer was also an American. As Holmes investigates, with the help of Scotland Yard, the mystery deepens. Douglas always raised the drawbridge at night, the moat was too big to leap, and there were no strangers in the house. Gradually, Holmes uncovers Douglas's background in America. In the second plot, a group of coal miners belonging to a secret society welcome a new member, Jack McMurdo, someone accused of murder in Chicago who needed to escape someplace where no one knew him. His lodge has recommended that he go to the Vermissa plain, "the Valley of Fear," and see Boss McGinty, the Bodymaster of the lodge there. McGinty and his men belong to a group which wreaks havoc on the community when it believes injustices have occurred. Seemingly above the law, they have avoided being caught, though rumor has it that a Pinkerton man has been sent to unmask the members of the group. Holmes plays little or no part in this whole section. The two plots have seemingly little in common, except that the dead man from Part I is branded with the mark of the lodge of miners. The second part, about the lodge of miners, provides the motivation for the murder of Douglas in the first part. It is too bad that Doyle did not separate these two stories, since the story of the miners, though not involving Holmes, could have been developed as a powerful "one-off." It is a story filled with all the ingredients of great fiction--even including a love story--a dramatic and relevant mystery with connections to the social issues of the day. For anyone interested in watching a writer try to bridge the gap between short stories and novels, this "novel," though fun, shows the errors of using two plots with too little integration of ideas. n Mary WhippleA Study in ScarletThe Hound of the Baskervilles: 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics)The Sign of Four (Penguin Classics)The Naval TreatySpeckled Band/Mystery of the Second Stain (Sherlock Holmes)

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Easily the second best Holmes Novel - Wonderful Read!!! By Albert J. Valentino The Sherlock Holmes canon includes a total of 60 stories from the original author, AC Doyle. Of the 60, only four were full novels including this one. The rest are short stories published in five books, totaling 9 books. The first two stories penned by Doyle were the novels, Study in Scarlet (where Holmes and Watson first meet), and A Sign of the Four (which includes Watson meeting his wife). This is followed by short stories in book 3, the Adventures of SH. Ideally the stories are best read in order, but not critical. Unlike the rest of the canon, the two novels, Hound of the Baskervilles and Valley of Fear, can be read at any time - especially since they each defy the chronology. Hound was written about 8 years after the short story, The Final Solution, when Holmes died in a mortal struggle with the Napoleon of crime, Professor Moriarty, who was also killed. (But, Holmes doesn't die and is brought back, very cleverly and very credibly, 10 years later, in the story, The Empty House, written 2 years after Hound. Anyway, 10 years after all that Doyle wrote, The Valley of Fear - which is one of two stories that include Prof Moriarty - this is not a spoiler to the story and the Prof is only talked about in present tense. I guess my point is, this novel, and Hound of the Baskervilles can be read at any time whereas everything else is slightly better if read in order. Okay, enough of the background on the canon.Valley of Fear is simply a great read with wonderful twists at the end that the reader will not likely see coming. I would put Valley and Hound as the two best novels, with Hound perhaps slightly better, but better is all about taste and preference. Anyway, this novel is broken down into two main parts, Part 1 is the Murder mystery, who killed...? Part 2 is a backstory, about 20 years earlier and has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. The part 2 story provides the motivation for the murder mystery in part 1. This format is the same as found in the first two novels but the backstory here is probably the best of the three - Doyle now has almost 30 years of writing experience. There is a very short part 3, the Epilogue which brings us back to Baker Street for a final update. The Valley of Fear part 1 mystery the reader gets most of the clues the same time as Holmes does and is more or less free to try to figure things out himself but as I mentioned, there are twists and nothing in Valley of Fear is what it seems!!!! One noticeable difference for myself, who has now read 7 of the 9 books, and possibly fellow Sherlockians, is that the deep friendship between Holmes and Watson is just not there. The first page was almost disturbing in that regard. Watson is more of an object then a subject to Holmes, more like the modern adaptations. It's just something that jumped out at me since other than the Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series series, which is extremely faithful to the original stories, Holmes and Watson have a deep personal friendship and respect. Watson is a friend, gentlemen, medic, soldier, and chronicler - not the bumbling sidekick of the Basil Rathbone movies. Anyway, the story, both part 1 and 2, are excellent and much better than I expected. Highly recommended.

In the Days of the Comet by H. G. Wells, humanity is exalted. A comet changes the world forevermore. Happiness and beauty are our atmosphere; there is peace on Earth and good will to all men.

I saw a gray-haired man, a figure of hale age, sitting at a desk and writing. He seemed to be in a room in a tower very high so that through the tall window on his left, one perceived only distances - a remote horizon of sea, a headland, and that vague haze and glitter in the sunset that many miles away marks a city.

Surprisingly good; gentle, and well written By Mike Smith As a kid, I must have read "War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine" two dozen times apiece. H.G. Wells appealed to the most fantastic parts of my imagination, and he still does. As a kid, I also read this book once, "In the Days of the Comet," but I don't remember being quite as impressed. As an adult however, I have re-read "War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine," and while I still enjoyed them, found them to be more along the lines of paperback thrillers. When I re-read this book, however, I found a treasure. This book tells the story of a world changed by a comet--a comet that passes by the earth and allows everyone to see themselves and one another as they truly are. It affects everything from relationships, to the structures of towns, to how people look at one another. It allows the world to become truly socialist in a non-political way. It shows the world as what it could be if only everyone viewed one another as equally important as one's self. It is not a political manifesto, because by its very premise it suggests the impossibility of such a wondrous happening and of such a change. It is not a violent, dynamic book that hurtles itself forward the way "War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine" do--it is a gentle, thoughtful look at people, at people's motivations, at the problems of the world, and at a wish to be better than we have been.It is also astoundingly well written. That's what hit me the most about it. It is full of powerful phrases, poetic sentences, and clearly expressed ideas and metaphors. As an adult, I recommend this book as one of Wells's very best. It's a treat that I plan to re-read yet again.

Wells was a known socialist for much of his life, although his opinions seemed to have change after the rise of the Stalinist Soviet Union. This book, with the misleading title, is NOT science fiction in the classic sense. However, this 1906 Wells' work is clearly an effort by Wells to show why the world should become socialist. He constantly ridicules the capitalist world by pointing out how capitalism breeds social classes which in turn breeds an unequal lifestyle among human beings. The rich get all the benefits of life, while the poor are left in squalor. Perhaps Wells' best illustration of this comes late in the book when the mother of the main character tells how her daughter died because she couldn't afford to pay the doctors who demanded their fee up front. Wells' also tries to convince the reader that socialism will not mean an end to the family, although it apparantly will mean the end of the single family home, all of which are destroyed in several! English cities by the socialists in this book. In fact, Wells claims people will find true love as a result of socialism because people will no longer think they are better than others. If you are looking for something in the realms of WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE INVISIBLE MAN or THE TIME MACHINE, this book is not for you. If you are a die-hard Wells fan you will probably enjoy this look into Wells' socialist ideas.

Utopia through extra-terrestial influences By A Customer I first read this and saw that it was a Utopian Novel which was much more positive than others I had also read(by Orwell, for instance). However,I can see now that, although highly disguised through the science-fiction and humanity, this was Wells' own Socialist ideas of the world.Wells is an author whose works can be read as either science fiction, human interest or social commentary.

PDF Ebook The Sixth Republic, by Howard Robinson

What happens when the country you have always called home decides you're not welcome anymore? A new novel, which imagines what life might be like in France under a future Far Right President - as told through the stories of a series of different characters, The Sixth Republic is Howard Robinson’s third novel. It begins with France having elected her first Far Right President, Marianne Mercier, who wastes no time in moving to create a nation only for those she deems to be “authentically French”. This includes the closing of France’s borders, the imposition of bans on ethnic minorities and the creation of guarded communes in remote parts of the country to which all members of ethnic communities must be sent. The novel explores the implications of such moves for those labelled the enemy within - people like young Muslim woman Inura Badour, her parents and her partner or Jewish teacher Andre Saloman and his family, including his grandmother Mathilde, who had been a member of the French Resistance during World War Two. The plot continues in the United Kingdom, where admirers of the new French President are poised to engineer a similar scenario. The rise of the National Independence Party and its leader Hugo Sherriden threatens anyone deemed undesirable by virtue of colour, religion or sexuality. But amid the darkness, there is always hope that tolerance can win out over extremism.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great series By woodsever Okay...where us the fourth installment to this series? I can hardly wait. This is, so far, a truly great story. I had a bit of a problem with this particular installment, though, as it went a bit overboard (no pun intended) with the angst and anxiety woven into the plot. There were a vast amount of grammatical errors and typos, but I could easily overlook them because the writing is basically very good and the storyline gold. I definitely recommend the entire series!

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the small seaport of Taganrog, southern Russia, the son of a grocer. Chekhov's grandfather was a serf, who had bought his own freedom and that of his three sons in 1841. He also taught himself to read and write. Yevgenia Morozova, Chekhov's mother, was the daughter of a cloth merchant. "When I think back on my childhood," Chekhov recalled, "it all seems quite gloomy to me." His early years were shadowed by his father's tyranny, religious fanaticism, and long nights in the store, which was open from five in the morning till midnight. He attended a school for Greek boys in Taganrog (1867-68) and Taganrog grammar school (1868-79). The family was forced to move to Moscow following his father's bankruptcy. At the age of 16, Chekhov became independent and remained for some time alone in his native town, supporting himself through private tutoring. In 1879 Chekhov entered the Moscow University Medical School. While in the school, he began to publish hundreds of comic short stories to support himself and his mother, sisters and brothers. His publisher at this period was Nicholas Leikin, owner of the St. Petersburg journal Oskolki (splinters). His subjects were silly social situations, marital problems, farcical encounters between husbands, wives, mistresses, and lovers, whims of young women, of whom Chekhov had not much knowledge – the author was was shy with women even after his marriage. His works appeared in St. Petersburg daily papers, Peterburskaia gazeta from 1885, and Novoe vremia from 1886.

Language Notes Text: English, Russian (translation)

About the Author Anton Chekhov, in full Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (born Jan. 29 [Jan. 17, Old Style], 1860, Taganrog, Russia—died July 14/15 [July 1/2], 1904, Badenweiler, Ger.), major Russian playwright and master of the modern short story. He was a literary artist of laconic precision who probed below the surface of life, laying bare the secret motives of his characters. Chekhov’s best plays and short stories lack complex plots and neat solutions. Concentrating on apparent trivialities, they create a special kind of atmosphere, sometimes termed haunting or lyrical. Chekhov described the Russian life of his time using a deceptively simple technique devoid of obtrusive literary devices, and he is regarded as the outstanding representative of the late 19th-century Russian realist school.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Skilled at minute description By Kathryn C. Hogan Checkhov is skilled at the minute description. When he describes the plight of a trapped bug, that description stays with you. And even more important, he describes relationships - the man and estranged wife, the ready-to-retire doctor and his long suffering wife...With Checkhov's background as a medical doctor, his observations and detailed analyses make a lot of sense. I enjoy his short stories (though some are pretty darned long!) Some of his descriptions will stay with you a very long time.

HATED THE FACT THE IT WOULD GO FROM AN EXTREME SITUATION TO WANTING SEX. LYNISE SEEMED LIKE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSON IN THIS BOOK AND SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WERE HAPPENING SEEMED OUTLANDISH. EITHER WAY IT WAS A DECENT READ AND I WILL READ PART 3 JUST TO FINISH THE STORY. HOPING THAT THERE ISN'T ANOTHER PART AFTER 3.
