George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. Originally earning his way as an influential London music and theatre critic, Shaw's greatest gift was for the modern drama. Strongly influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he successfully introduced a new realism into English-language drama. He wrote more than 60 plays, among them Man and Superman, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Pygmalion. With his range from biting contemporary satire to historical allegory, Shaw became the leading comedy dramatist of his generation and one of the most important playwrights in the English language since the 17th century.

Taylor Like many writers at the turn of the 20th Century, Shaw was very much interested in "the woman question," for women were becoming increasingly independent and more of a challenge to men in both public and private spheres. Although he also addressed these issues in such other plays as PYGMALION and MAN AND SUPERMAN, CANDIDA is perhaps his clearest statement on the subject. Written in 1894, it is a statement that has proven timeless. It is easily among the favorite performance pieces of world theatre. The plot is quite simple. The Rev. Morrell is a minister with a taste for reform--and he has had the good fortune to marry the perfect wife, a remarkable woman named Candida who has a talent for smoothing every path she encounters. One of the paths to which she has turned that talent is that of Marchbanks, a poetic young man who is the grip of all the emotional turmoil delayed adolescence implies. But Marchbanks has fallen in love with Candida, and when he informs her husband of this all hell breaks loose.Throughout much of the play Morrell and Marchbanks engage in a series of brilliantly written duels over Candida, each of them espousing what Candida means to them and what they can give her, arguing through numerous philosophical issues in the process. But neither gentleman has actually troubled to consult Candida herself; when they eventually lay the issue before her and insist that she decide between them, she responds in a way that not only demonstrates how little they know of her, but how little they know about both women and the world in general. The climax of the play has been dropping jaws in theatres for well over a hundred years and it seems likely that it will do so for at least a hundred more--and although Shaw presents his play as a comedy, it will be the rare husband who leaves it without a quick glance at his wife and the disturbed thought that like Candida, she may not be entirely what he has always believed her to be. Brilliantly written and reading as well on the page as it plays on the stage, CANDIDA is easily among the great plays of this or any other era; a personal favorite and very strongly recommended.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Amazing introduction By Sibylle Peter Gahan's introduction to G.B. Shaw's play Candida in the new Penguin Classics edition shows an old favorite play in a very new light. Not only does Gahan read between the lines of the plot, he also draws the reader's attention to on-stage props, names, and even off-stage happenings, which might otherwise easily go unnoticed. He makes some truly amazing connections with a multitude of other works of art, such as Yeats' poetry, pre-Raphelite paintings, and Wagnerian opera. This new edition of Candida is worth buying for its introduction alone.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A great play By Israel Drazin Comparing Shaw's Candida and Voltaire's Candide adds a dimension of understanding to both. Voltaire's Candide focuses on the enlightenment of a very naïve young boy who is influenced by his teacher, the philosopher Pangloss, who teaches him that this is "the best of all possible worlds" and therefore everything in it and everything that happens is not only good but the best that could possibly be. Voltaire was pocking fun at the philosopher Leibniz who taught this notion. Leibniz argued that God is good and all that he creates must of necessity be good. Voltaire shows that this is a ridiculous notion - according to this view, why save a man who is drowning since his death is "obviously" the best thing there is. The boy comes to understand that philosophy/thinking is not good; one should instead live life to the fullest. Shaw's Candida focuses on a woman and what women want from men. However, the comedy in three acts also contains a very naïve young boy and it too enlightens men who have a wrong concept. The eighteen-year-old boy falls in love with the wife of an approximately forty-year-old pastor. She is fifteen years older than the boy. Both the pastor and the boy argue about who Candida should live with. Both want to give her the best of all possible worlds. Both ask Candida to decide between them. But, as in the Voltaire tale, Candida is not interested in the best of all possible worlds. She makes her choice based on an entirely different desire.

Alonzo Fitz and other stories, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

Jessica was fun, because her character opened you up to the whole world of RnB singers. Their lives can be filled with hurt and pain. Brody takes away that pain. He's funny and pleasant. And from moment they meet, Jessica finds herself in the most sexy scenario. Anyway, no more spoilers. This was more than just your average 'run of the mill' BWWM romances. I definitely recommend it.

The history of Mr. Polly, by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

He has a shop that is not doing so well and a wife who is unhappy with him and what he does and his stomach aches and.... He disparages of being able to be happy. As I started to listen to this story I was thinking this is not much of a story. Where is the science fiction? Where is the action? Who knew that Mr. Wells wrote social commentary literature? But I continued to listen, and I was entranced. The story starts as mentioned above, then you read of his history, his schooling and first job, he parents, etc. His story is one of normal English lower middle class at the turn of the century. He was nothing special and had no drive to excel at anything, and skated by as best he could with as little effort as he had to put forth. He was also one to not rock the boat. I would have to say he was trying to be a good guy, but he failed at that, as it turns out, miserably. He grows up, starts working, looks to change jobs, his father dies, leaving him some money to start his own shop with, and he gets married, on and on. At this point Mr. Wells inserts his social commentary – some middle class people get a chance to better themselves, but make a hash of it, partly because of the way society is arranged and partly because they are not capable of doing it right for one reason or another. These poor souls spend their inheritance trying and then have to just get out and do whatever to survive, ending up poorer in soul and wallet. This is the fate of Mr. Polly, but he makes mistakes that leave him a bit better off, but still bothered and unsatisfied, so he goes off walking and this saves him. He wanders into the life of a simple woman trying to keep her granddaughter and run an inn. He settles down and his life becomes the best he could hope for. He is not a Buddha, but living by the river and helping with the inn, he absentmindedly enjoys his life. I was surprised to feel that this was a really good story, mundane, for sure, but really rather enjoyable.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A very fine free book By Israel Drazin I have written in the past in my reviews of books by Francis Trollope, the mother of Anthony Trollope, that it is possible today to get classical books for free from sources such as amazon, and many of them are fun to read. I encouraged readers of good literature to take advantage of these sources. The books are now made available at no cost because they are public property; their copyright has expired. "No Thoroughfare" by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, two superb writers, is a good example of an excellent book to read. It is a mixture of a play within a novella. There are essentially three plots filled with interesting characters, the kind that these master writers are able to invent. One plot focuses on a foundling who believes that he was taken by his real mother from the institution when he was just entering his teen-age years. She, a wealthy woman, was also convinced because of unusual circumstances that the boy is her own son. The two lived together in a warm and loving relationship for about half a dozen years. When she died, she left her estate to the young man she believed was her son. Then a circumstance arose that revealed to the young man that he was not the woman's true son. He feels very guilty and thinks that the woman who gave him his current wealth really wanted it to go to her natural child. He makes every effort he can to find this person. The second plot focuses on this young man's business partner. He falls in love with a young Swiss woman who also loves him, but the woman is young and under the control of a guardian who refuses permission to the marriage unless the young man can double his income. The young man feels confident he can do so. The young woman goes along with the agreement feeling she owes it to her guardian who is apparently considering what is best for her. However, there is something strange about this guardian. The young man is unable to put his finger on the problem. The third plot is that just at this moment, when the young man needs all the money he can get to double his income, a huge amount of money is stolen from the firm. Who took the money and how was it done. The guardian is acting strangely. Is he involved? Readers will enjoy this tale and those who are familiar with the style of the two great writers will, besides enjoying the drama and the manner in which it is presented, find it interesting to see how the two styles intertwine.

My best advice: get it!!!! and read it!!!! and PLEASE, PROVE ME WRONG!!.
