Both stories center around a valuable stolen painting with the same name as the novel title. Boston lawyer Teddy Murphy is handed a unique civil case to reclaim the painting for a foundation started by the original owner, Dr. Markus Steiner. Teddy must argue that the painting was stolen from Steiner's art gallery by the Nazis during the start of WWII and, regardless of how the current owner obtained it, it should be returned. In preparation for the trial, Teddy is given several of Steiner's diaries to read and then the other story begins. Shirar, the author, now takes us on a unique journey of historical importance that I was truly entranced with. Starting in 1907, Steiner's diaries follow his life from a young man who enters the First World War as a German Jew fighting in the trenches against the French and British, to living in a completely different Germany at the start of WWII where he is persecuted. His business is ruined and he is forced to flee. Shirar's renditions of the First World War are shockingly honest. His writing shows how life in the trenches was brutal and lonely. He also dwells on the sexual frustration of young men trapped with no release for weeks at a time. Be warned that is not a novel for adolescents as he continues on with the sexual exploration for the rest of the diaries. That being said, it shows how the human psyche needs release during difficult times to survive. The continuing diaries follow Steiner throughout the tumultuous 20's; Berlin at the height of its sexual awakening and Germany falling apart after WWI. The memoires of living through the 30's offer a history lesson that all should read on how the Nazis came to power.  What I found interesting was not only were Steiner's diaries written in the first person but Teddy, the narrator, was also written in the first person which made for a fascinating perspective.  Although Teddy's personal life was a bit dry sometimes, through his experience of Steiner's life, he began evaluating his own.  As the intriguing investigations and revelations of the upcoming trial continued, Shirar showed through the diary entries how the German people of the time, even some Jews, deceived themselves into believing that Hitler's rise to power through the early 30's was nothing at all - thinking that life would stay the same and eventually return to normal. The Girl Called Princess Charlotte, is a powerful novel that shows us the fragility of our world even in these modern times.

I never really understood the details of and always wondered how mindful, intelligent people could allow what went on in Germany to transpire. Shirar offers an extremely probable scenario.Through the portrait of Franz Winterhlters’, Young Girl Called Princess Charlotte, Gerard Shirar tells a tail of innocence lost, as he weaves the history of Germany and the persecution of the Jewish people, through the intriguing first hand journal accounts of an art dealer; Markus Steiner.I found a section when Teddy Murphy was talking to his girlfriend about Markus’s diary, very poignant.No matter how bad things seem avoid people with promises of easy solutions and radical ideas that prey on prejudice. What happened in Germany can also happen here and it reminds me of story they tell about Benjamin Franklin when the founding fathers were planning our form of government in Philadelphia. One afternoon a women stopped Franklin on the street and asked ,’What type of government are you going to give us Mr. Franklin?’ Franklin is reported to have answered “A Republic, Madam if you can keep it”This is a really good, thought provoking read. I got the kindle addition and think that the upload to pdf was a little off. However it didn’t distract from the story line, for me.

Nazi take what once belonged to the Jewish people of Germany. They had their rights stripped, their possessions taken, and countless thousands were killed. Families were torn, fear in every direction...any kind of resistance lured not only the Jewish owner but the owner's family to death. The Girl Called Princess Charlotte by Gerard Shirar is a startling truth that should be uncovered and read by all. Gerard Shirar's writing is well-developed and awe-inspiring. It shows readers that even after so much time has gone by that justice can prevail. Overall, I highly recommend this historical novel to readers worldwide.

While the lawyers are working on the case behind it, a story begins to develop from the diaries of a young man named Markus. The mystery behind the painting is fascinating and it makes for a great and intriguing read.Honestly, when I first began I wasn't sure how I felt about this book. It was a bit slow to start, but it soon had me deeply sucked into the story. This book has a lot of history and so it made it a great read to me. I absolutely fell in love with the character of Markus. His writing in the diaries is so real. He was in the war. He saw the Nazi parties, he saw the discrimination against the Jews.It all had a very real feel to it. It was hard not to like him and feel for him through all his journeys. He was very colorful in his diary and you see the world and the aftermath from all sides. He painted a very clear picture of his life and what was really going on in the world during this time.If you love history like I do, this book will be right up your alley....Stormi

Brilliant and seductive By Amazon Customer Often I end up on my pc a little late in the night after every tiring day’s job, and reading Jules Elbesheusen's work, especially this one, I kid you not, the writing gets me high, owing to the clarity, detail and subconsciously seducing style. The detail he pens just about anything goes to such minute as well as elaborate levels of reality. With Jules' writing it is not only old school, but also, a sort of an amusing dance of metaphors and contrasts. Pleasure to read, the work of a master, the imagination of a genius portraying the human condition.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855. Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record in the registry of St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh gives 'Arthur Ignatius Conan' as his Christian name, and simply 'Doyle' as his surname. It also names Michael Conan as his godfather. At the age of nine Conan Doyle was sent to the Roman Catholic Jesuit preparatory school, Hodder Place, Stonyhurst. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in 1875. From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. This required that he provide periodic medical assistance in the towns of Aston (now a district of Birmingham) and Sheffield. While studying, Conan Doyle began writing short stories. His first published story appeared in "Chambers's Edinburgh Journal" before he was 20. Following his graduation, he was employed as a ship's doctor on the SS Mayumba during a voyage to the West African coast. He completed his doctorate on the subject of tabes dorsalis in 1885. In 1885 Conan Doyle married Louisa (or Louise) Hawkins, known as "Touie". She suffered from tuberculosis and died on 4 July 1906. The following year he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie, whom he had first met and fallen in love with in 1897. Due to his sense of loyalty he had maintained a purely platonic relationship with Jean while his first wife was alive. Jean died in London on 27 June 1940. Conan Doyle fathered five children. Two with his first wife—Mary Louise (28 January 1889 – 12 June 1976), and Arthur Alleyne Kingsley, known as Kingsley (15 November 1892 – 28 October 1918). With his second wife he had three children—Denis Percy Stewart (17 March 1909 – 9 March 1955), second husband in 1936 of Georgian Princess Nina Mdivani (circa 1910 – 19 February 1987; former sister-in-law of Barbara Hutton); Adrian Malcolm (19 November 1910–3 June 1970) and Jean Lena Annette (21 December 1912–18 November 1997). Conan Doyle was found clutching his chest in the hall of Windlesham, his house in Crowborough, East Sussex, on 7 July 1930. He had died of a heart attack at age 71. His last words were directed toward his wife: "You are wonderful." The epitaph on his gravestone in the churchyard at Minstead in the New Forest, Hampshire, reads: STEEL TRUE BLADE STRAIGHT ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE KNIGHT PATRIOT, PHYSICIAN & MAN OF LETTERS Conan Doyle's house, Undershaw, located in Hindhead, south of London, where he had lived for a decade, had been a hotel and restaurant between 1924 and 2004. It now stands empty while conservationists and Conan Doyle fans fight to preserve it. A statue honours Conan Doyle at Crowborough Cross in Crowborough, where Conan Doyle lived for 23 years. There is also a statue of Sherlock Holmes in Picardy Place, Edinburgh, close to the house where Conan Doyle was born.

About the Author The creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous literary detective. Born in Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a practising doctor when he began to write tales of mystery and adventure. In addition to the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle also wrote the Professor Challenger adventures, and his classic, The Lost World, is one of the original fantasy novels. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School. Graduating in 1881, he set up practice as an occultist, but as patients proved elusive he turned to writing. An important influence upon his literary career was his professor, Dr Joseph Bell, who could observe the most minute detail regarding a patient's condition. This master of deduction became the model for Conan Doyle's legendary literary creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, introduced in 'A Study in Scarlet' in 1887. Conan Doyle also espoused spiritualism and devoted considerable time and effort to a campaign of support for this cause. He also wrote successfully in genres other than detective fiction. His non-fiction includes military writing on the Boer War and pamphlets on spiritualism. It is known that he felt constricted at times by the popularity of Holmes, but it is nevertheless for Sherlock Holmes and his foil, the ponderous Dr Watson that he is best remembered. As Sherlock Holmes was the first detective to solve cases by deduction rather than due to an error by the criminal, Conan Doyle can be credited with creating the modern detective novel. He was knighted in 1902 for his support of the British cause in the Boer Wars. After the death of his son in the First World War, he devoted the rest of his life to spiritualism on which he wrote and lectured.

The characters are so well described and the stories so well crafted that the book is a pleasure to read. In some, you will get, as in the Sherlock Holmes series, final twists that will surprise and bring a smile. The stories are set in a wide range of places, from Europe to Egypt, to the west indies.Included are : the Green Flag, Captain Sharkey, The dealings of Captain Sharkey with Steven Craddock, How Copley Banks slew Captain Sharkey, The Croxley Master, The Lord of Chat4eau Noir, The Striped Chest, A Shadow before, The King of Foxes, The Three Correspondents, The New Catacomb, The debut if Bimbashi Joyce and A Foreign Office Romance.

Tales of boxers, buccaneers, and British brigades By Karl Janssen I always enjoy diving into one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s non-Sherlock Holmes collections of short stories, because you never know what you’re going to draw from one of his fiction grab bags. The title of this 1900 collection, The Green Flag and Other Stories of War and Sport, held little appeal for me, but once I got into it I was glad to discover that the parameters of “war and sport” are decidedly broad. This volume does contain stories of battlefield combat, and “Sport” is covered by boxing and hunting, but it also includes tales of pirates, diplomats, reporters, stock traders, and even a pair of horror stories. Though the diversity is appreciated, overall the quality of the entries is not remarkable. With the exception of a few standouts, The Green Flag is one of Conan Doyle’s weaker story collections.The book opens with its worst piece, the title selection. It’s a drab narration of war in North Africa between British and Arabs. There’s a subplot about Irish soldiers rebelling against their English commanders, but it’s basically about gun calibres and troop maneuvers. This collection contains three other stories dealing with British colonialism in Egypt and the Sudan—“The Three Correspondents,” “The Debut of Bimbashi Joyce,” and “A Foreign Office Romance,” all of which are among its worst entries. They tend to have rather simplistic plots with a predictable twist, dressed up with the names of exotic locales and the sights and sounds of the desert. Each makes attempts at clever humor which mostly fall flat.Conan Doyle finds better success with his seafaring stories. “Captain Sharkey” is a triptych of tales featuring the adventures of the most nefarious pirate in the Caribbean. The title character is a ruthless and violent villain, but, like an Arsène Lupin of the high seas, one can’t help but admire his cleverness and derring-do. These stories are well-crafted with artful plots and well-decked with the trappings of pirate lore. Conan Doyle’s pirate writing ranks right up among the best with the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson.Another strong entry is “The Striped Chest.” A British ship comes across a vessel adrift. When the captain boards the craft to investigate, he discovers signs of a murder that seems linked to a mysterious antique chest. It’s a nautical mystery that touches on horror. The other aforementioned horror selection is “The New Catacomb,” an Edgar Allen Poe-esque story that also appears in the collection Tales of Terror and Mystery.Of the sporting stories, “The King of Foxes” is a mediocre effort about fox hunting. Conan Doyle describes the hunt itself with obvious love for the sport, but he approaches the subject from an odd angle and caps the story off with a predictable ending. “The Croxley Master” is about a medical student who, in order to pay his tuition, agrees to fight the local champion in a boxing match. It’s a good underdog story, and Conan Doyle’s writes about boxing almost as well as Jack London.Though I’ve mostly discussed the bright spots here, the bads outweigh the goods in this collection. However, a mediocre book by master storyteller Conan Doyle is still better than the best books of most short story authors. This one’s worth a download just to read “Captain Sharkey” and “The Striped Chest.”

He is best known for his La Comédie humaine, a multivolume collection of linked novels and stories. He died in 1850 in Paris at the age of fifty-one.

Only contains the first twenty stories By Z Hayes French author Honoré de Balzac wrote a collection of stories which were published in three sets of ten stories each, and these stories came to be known as Droll Stories. Written in a lively manner with Balzac's characteristic wordplay using 16th century language, the stories make for engaging reading. Although this 1978 Franklin Library edition is a fine, leather-bound edition, it features only the first twenty of the thirty stories, from the first and second decade, respectively. I wish I had known this prior to ordering. The book itself is of high quality like others in The Franklin Library series of The Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers, and contains the translation by J. Lewis May, and illustrations by Elaine Raphael and Don Bolognese.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dated and boring By medfair I have to admit that I have not managed to read more than a sixth of this book. It is very well written (if you accept the archaic style) and the subject was supposed to be funny, usually the virtue of losing virtue. Alas, like Yogi Berra's famous quote - "It's deja vu all over again". Once you've read Chaucer or Boccaccio, it seems as novel and tasty as yesterday's gruel. Moreover, despite the translator claims, Decameron or The Canterbury Tales still read much better. It seems that both classics have more insight into the human psyche than Contes Drollatiques and possess the virtue of brevity and directness, which Stories lack very badly. Actually, one is soon lost in practically endless verbiage that detracts rather than adds to the enjoyment of the reader. Only of historical value. Sic transit...

About the Author William Walker Atkinson (1862-1932) was a lawyer, businessman, publisher, and prolific author writing under his own name and various pen names. As with many brilliant people trapped in a high pressure world full of demands not in sync with their spiritual nature, Atkinson suffered a mental and physical breakdown, as well as financial disaster. He found renewal in the "Mental Science" movement that took the American religious landscape by storm in the late 1800's. After his adoption of this mode of thinking, Atkinson regained his mental and physical health as well as his material prosperity. The movement that Atkinson credited with his rejuvenation would come to be known as "New Thought", a uniquely American spiritual philosophy that would go on to contribute to 20th century American culture and religion in untold ways. William Walker Atkinson contributed immeasurably to the development of New Thought through his many books and articles and other activities.

By Steve Bailey If anyone has not read this gem of a book, just because it's a century old, you're missing out on a really good thing. I actually ordered the softcover from Amazon, because I had to have it a more portable easier to read format. Wasn't satisfied with just having the online text that is available easily through a search on the web by using his name and title.He clarifies really nicely, the concepts of how to never resist the negative, opposing thoughts that come into your mind, and how to just simply focus on what you want. It's amazing, how in 1906, he puts things so well in line with what I had already been reading in more current works.Also the area of deservingness is very well explained, in a humorous but home-hitting way.I think the most important concept he covers is his emphasis on how important it is to keep your energy on just one objective, and to never waver in your attention to it, and he uses the analogy of a lover flirting with others instead of his/her mate. Flirting with other potential goals, i.e. indecision, leaves your main goal to respond in kind by taking a step backwards. ( recommend Message of a Master by John McDonald for an 80-page reminder of the importance of one-pointedness, here's the link: The Message of a Master )Atkinson's quote on worry: "You do not need to fight Worry - that isn't the way to overcome the habit. Just practice concentration, and then learn to concentrate upon something right before you, and you will find the worry thought has vanished. The mind can think of but one thing at a time, and if you concentrate upon a bright thing, the other thing will fade away. There are better ways of overcoming objectionable thoughts than by fighting them. Learn to concentrate upon thoughts of an opposite character, and you will have solved the problem."

He points out the similarities between the law of gravitation and the mental law of attraction. He explains that thought vibrations are as real as those manifesting as light, heat, magnetism and electricity. The difference is in the vibratory rate which also explains the fact that thought vibrations cannot usually be perceived by our 5 senses.He argues that there are huge gaps in the spectrum of light and sound vibrations, wide enough to include other worlds. It is logical that these activities would be perceived by sense organs attuned to them. Increasingly sophisticated scientific instruments are able to register more and more of these hidden frequencies.There is constant interaction between negative and positive thought vibrations - it is the task of the individual to raise the keynote of their mind to a positive pitch by an act of will. Atkinson discusses the purpose of affirmations as twofold: firstly, to establish new mental attitudes, secondly to raise the mental keynote. He also mentions that there must be a balance between giving out expressions and taking in impressions in a receptive state.The many faculties of the mind are identified and discussed, and the author asserts that the current of will-power flows strongly along spiritual wires but the individual must train in order to optimally tap into this energy source. The "I" is the master of the mind and the "will" is the instrument of the "I." Affirmations for internalising this insight are provided here.Atkinson also shows how to overcome negative emotions like fear, worry, envy, anger and hate. He firmly believes in the operation of universal law in all circumstances and advises the reader to tune in to the harmony of the law. I found the chapters Asserting The Life Force and Training The Habit Mind particularly helpful and inspiring.Although this book was written years ago, the text still sounds fresh and contemporary. The explanations of mental laws and processes are clear and concise and the exercises are simple and effective. I enjoyed the author's infectious optimism and his simple, direct approach.

It's so appropriate for today.I love this part:THE first thing to do is to begin to "cut out" Fear and Worry. Fear-thought is the cause of much unhappiness and many failures. You have been told this thing over and over again, but it willbear repeating. Fear is a habit of mind which has been fastened upon us by negative race-thought, but from which we may free ourselves by individual effort and perseverance.What he says is choose "courage" instead of fear... heres more of what he writes:Therefore, instead of repeating, "I'm not afraid," say boldly, "I am full of Courage," "I am Courageous." You must assert, "There's nothing to fear," which, although in the nature of a denial, simply denies the reality of the object causing fear rather than admitting the fear itself and then denying it.Wow, this is powerful. I have affirmations that he suggests added to my brain bullet software.Plus I put some up on the outside of the shower.. This changes your mindset, and sets in motion what you DO want instead of what you don't want.A very good bookLinda
