About the Author Honoré de Balzac was born in 1799 in France. As a novelist and playwright, he is widely regarded as the founder of realism in European literature. His work had a profound effect on generations of writers who have followed him, from Proust to Dickens to Faulkner to Kerouac. He is best known for his La Comédie humaine, a multivolume collection of linked novels and stories. He died in 1850 in Paris at the age of fifty-one.

Only contains the first twenty stories By Z Hayes French author Honoré de Balzac wrote a collection of stories which were published in three sets of ten stories each, and these stories came to be known as Droll Stories. Written in a lively manner with Balzac's characteristic wordplay using 16th century language, the stories make for engaging reading. Although this 1978 Franklin Library edition is a fine, leather-bound edition, it features only the first twenty of the thirty stories, from the first and second decade, respectively. I wish I had known this prior to ordering. The book itself is of high quality like others in The Franklin Library series of The Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers, and contains the translation by J. Lewis May, and illustrations by Elaine Raphael and Don Bolognese.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dated and boring By medfair I have to admit that I have not managed to read more than a sixth of this book. It is very well written (if you accept the archaic style) and the subject was supposed to be funny, usually the virtue of losing virtue. Alas, like Yogi Berra's famous quote - "It's deja vu all over again". Once you've read Chaucer or Boccaccio, it seems as novel and tasty as yesterday's gruel. Moreover, despite the translator claims, Decameron or The Canterbury Tales still read much better. It seems that both classics have more insight into the human psyche than Contes Drollatiques and possess the virtue of brevity and directness, which Stories lack very badly. Actually, one is soon lost in practically endless verbiage that detracts rather than adds to the enjoyment of the reader. Only of historical value. Sic transit...
