George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. One of Bernard Shaw’s early plays of social protest, Mrs Warren’s Profession places the protagonist’s decision to become a prostitute in the context of the appalling conditions for working class women in Victorian England. Faced with ill health, poverty, and marital servitude on the one hand, and opportunities for financial independence, dignity, and self-worth on the other, Kitty Warren follows her sister into a successful career in prostitution. Shaw’s fierce social criticism in this play is driven not by conventional morality, but by anger at the hypocrisy that allows society to condemn prostitution while condoning the discrimination against women that makes prostitution inevitable.

About the Author Born at 33 Synge Street in Dublin, Ireland to rather poor Church of Ireland parents, Bernard Shaw was educated at Wesley College, Dublin and moved to London during the 1870s to embark on his literary career. He wrote five novels, none of which were published, before finding his first success as a music critic on the Star newspaper. He wrote his music criticism under the pseudonym Corno di Bassetto. In the meantime he had become involved in politics, and served as a local councillor in the St Pancras district of London for several years from 1897. He was a noted socialist who took a leading role in the Fabian Society.In 1895, Shaw became the drama critic of the Saturday Review, and this was the first step in his progress towards a lifetime's work as a dramatist. In 1898, he married an Irish heiress, Charlotte Payne-Townshend. His first successful play, Candida, was produced in the same year. He followed this with a series of classic comedy-dramas, including The Devil's Disciple (1897), Arms and the Man (1898), Mrs Warren's Profession (1898), Captain Brassbound's Conversion (1900), Man and Superman (1903), Caesar and Cleopatra (1901), Major Barbara (1905), Androcles and the Lion (1912), and Pygmalion (1913). After World War I, during which he was a staunch pacifist, he produced more serious dramas, including Heartbreak House (1919) and Saint Joan (1923). A characteristic of Shaw's published plays is the lengthy prefaces that accompany them. In these essays, Shaw wrote more about his usually controversial opinions on the issues touched by the plays than about the plays themselves. Some prefaces are much longer than the actual play.

Taylor Although it was written in the late 1800s, censorship issues kept George Bernard Shaw's MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION off the stage for close to a decade, and it did not debut publically on the London stage until about 1900. Even after this delay, moralists denounced it as a scandalous play--and it remained controversial well into the mid-20th Century.The basic story concerns a pragmatic young woman, Vivie, who has spent her life in boarding schools, seeing her mother only on rare occasions. Upon graduation, she now directly confronts her mother and learns the bitter truth: Mrs. Warren is a former prostitute who has risen to the rank of a high class madam, and all of Vivie's education has been built on the profits of her profession. But the play takes an unexpected twist, for instead of sensationalizing or sentimentalizing prostitution, Shaw gives us Mrs. Warren as a business woman who took the only opportunity available to her and through commonsense and a strong work ethic parlayed her meager beginnings into a fortune of note.The obvious reason for public outcry against the play was Shaw's refusal to condemn Mrs. Warren for prostitution; less obvious but more powerful is the fact that Shaw condemns virtually every character and the society in which they move as grossly hypocritical. It is an incredibly hypocritical society that has forced Mrs. Warren to decide between the virtue of starvation and the sin of success; while easily the most sympathetic role in the play, Mrs. Warren emerges as a garden-variety hypocrite of limited insight; and while we may admire Vivie for her clarity of thought and apparent virtue, she emerges as a young woman of such ferocious self-determination that she is ultimately difficult to like.MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION was among Shaw's earliest plays, and it pales a bit in comparison to his later, more theatrically sophistocated works; consequently it is seldom revived today. Even so, it is a powerful example of the new style Shaw would forge in theatre, a dark comedy overflowing with complex ideas and wickedly funny ironies. Shaw's tone of voice is both distinct and unique, he reads from the page as well as he plays on the stage, and he would exert a profound influence on drama throughout the 20th Century. By Kylie Edwards In this wonderful play Shaw brilliantly takes on a forbidden subject that got him into trouble back in his day but that's now praised as an excellent and insightful masterpiece. I must agree that it is truly excellent even though the subject it takes on is a very uncomfortable one even now.You can't help but root for Vivie as she cleverly deals with the hypocritical rogues around her in this hilarious tale.This story was smart and funny. I loved it and wanted more when it was over. I'll have to buy another one of his books. I just love his style.I can't resist any chance I can get to peek into the mind of a genius, and Shaw was a true genius. This story was delightful and brilliant.

Shaw has given us yet another strong and intelligent female character in a brilliantly humorous tale that exposes the seedy underbelly of prim and proper Victorian society. It's a powerful indictment of Victorian era society, which exposes its corruption and hypocrisy. Even today the subject matter of this story is shocking, so I can certainly see why it would have caused such a ruckus back then.As is always the case with Shaw's works, the characters are very well fleshed out and mirror people you know in real life. The circumstances are wildly, laugh-out-loud entertaining, the plot is beautifully ironic, and the message is as serious as a heart attack. In this work he doesn't pull a single punch.Shaw is my favorite of the Victorian playwrights. His works were revolutionary in many ways. Use of humor was rare and exceptional for playwrights during that era, but Shaw was not afraid to make audiences laugh. He also tackled serious moral, political, and social issues in his plays at a time when sappy dramas were all the rage. He was truly bold and innovative and greatly contributed to dramatic art. He had an amazing gift, the ability to make people think while simultaneously making them laugh.Reading Shaw's works are a genuine treat. All of his plays are fabulous. His characters are memorable, and his humor is brilliant.This is a wonderful book, charming, significant, and insightful. I can't recommend it enough.

100 of 104 people found the following review helpful. One of the most entertaining novels ever By JR Pinto I read criticisms of this book that it is not one of Dickens' best. For me, it is up there with Great Expectations and David Copperfield as one of his most enjoyable novels (A Christmas Carol is a short story).The social axe that Dickens had to grind in this story is man's injustice to children. Modern readers my feel that his depiction of Dotheboys Academy is too melodramatic. Alas, unfortunately, it was all too real. Charles Dickens helped create a world where we can't believe that such things happen. Dickens even tell us in an introduction that several Yorkshire schoolmasters were sure that Wackford Squeers was based on them and threatened legal action.The plot of Nicholas Nickleby is a miracle of invention. It is nothing more than a series of adventures, in which Nicholas tries to make his way in the world, separate himself from his evil uncle, and try to provide for his mother and sister.There are no unintersting characters in Dickens. Each one is almost a charicature. This book contains some of his funniest characters.To say this is a melodrama is not an insult. This is melodrama at its best. Its a long book, but a fast read.

Dickens is as much a social critic as a storyteller in "Nicholas Nickleby," which basically pits the noble young man who gives the novel its title against his wickedly scheming rich uncle Ralph in a grand canvas of London and English society. At the beginning of the novel, Nicholas's father has just died, leaving his family destitute, and Uncle Ralph, a moneylender (specifically, a usurer) and a venture capitalist of sorts, greedy and callous by the requirements of the story, reluctantly feels obligated to help them, and does so by securing for Nicholas a position as headmaster's assistant at a school for boys in Yorkshire, and for Nicholas's sister Kate a job as a dressmaker for a foppish clown named Mr. Mantalini, while Nicholas and Kate's scatterbrained mother is left in her room to mutter incoherent reminiscences about random events in her life.This Yorkshire school, called Dotheboys Hall, turns out to be little more than a prison in the way it is run by its headmaster, an improbably cruel cyclops named Wackford Squeers who badly mistreats and miseducates the students. Now, historical records indicate that while Squeers may be an exaggeration, his school is definitely not, Dickens intending to warn his readers of the day that some such places were indeed that bad. The duration at Dotheboys Hall constitutes only a small portion of the novel, but Squeers and his grotesque family reappear throughout the rest of the story like gremlins who are always causing bad things to happen to our hero.Nicholas's fortunes after escaping from Dotheboys Hall with Smike, a particularly abused older boy whom Squeers had worked like a slave, revolve largely around the circumstances of Kate and Uncle Ralph, who is starting to view the young man as a nuisance inclined to interfere in his machinations. Having been vilified by Squeers for his brash conduct at the Hall, Nicholas takes to the road with Smike in tow, where in Portsmouth they meet a thespian named Vincent Crummles who persuades the fugitives to become actors in his theatrical troupe; this episode, the strangest of Nicholas's adventures, seems more than anything else to reflect Dickens's own interest in the theater. Eventually Nicholas returns to London and gets a job as a clerk at a counting-house owned by a pair of merchants, the cheery Cheeryble brothers, where he encounters a beautiful girl in distress who will become a major factor in the final showdown between Nicholas and his uncle.The supporting characters are numerous and extremely colorful to the point of cartoonishness, such as Miss La Creevy, a talkative spinster and amateur painter; John Browdie, the gruff Yorkshireman whose dialect is so severe he needs a translator; Sir Mulberry Hawk, the arrogant suitor whom Kates tries to rebuff; Newman Noggs, Uncle Ralph's benevolent clerk who helps our hero when he can. In fact, the most curious thing about the characterization in this novel is that its main characters are almost completely devoid of personality; Nicholas and Kate, perhaps being by necessity innocuous paragons of virtue, are practically mere mannequins to whom people talk and things happen. Even the sickly and wretchedly humble Smike, the mystery of whose parentage becomes a part of the plot, does not induce as much pity as Dickens probably intended because he seems trapped in a story that doesn't really want him except as a device to expose even more of Uncle Ralph's villainy.There is much to like in "Nicholas Nickleby": The prose is finely detailed, the satire of various types of characters is on target, the humor is sharp -- there is a particularly funny and suspenseful scene with an unexpected outcome in which Nicholas dispatches Newman to discover the identity of the mysterious beautiful girl. And there is much not to like: The plot coincidences are ridiculously contrived in typical Dickensian fashion; the drama is manipulative, designed to cheer the reader all the more when the author comes to rescue the heroes from their despair and hopelessness; the sentimentality is overwhelming -- by the end "Nicholas Nickleby" becomes so saccharine it makes "David Copperfield" look like "Blood Meridian." But Dickens remains eminently readable because of his flair for portraying and celebrating human oddity in all its varieties, his knowledge that life is all about taking the bad with the good, and his sense that fiction is all about maximizing the contrast.

I detested it, swore I would never read Dickens again, only to find that my junior year held in store for me what would become one of my favorite novels, Great Expectations, a book heinously bastardized years later by a 'modernized' film adaptation, with Anne Bancroft being the only redeeming feature.Through the years since high school, I have begun to read Dickens of my own free will, and have greatly enjoyed his works.Nicholas Nickelby, one of my all time favorites, is a wonderful novel, typical Dickens, chock full of characters, plots, satire, and story. Nicholas and his immediate family are the 'black sheep' of the Nickelby name. Humble, gentle, and common in the eyes of their well-to-do relative, Uncle Ralph Nickelby, who denounces Nicholas as a boy, and man, who will never amount to anything.In typical Dickens fashion, Nicholas encounters adversity first at a boarding school, then in society, as he forges a name for himself. Along the way he befriends many, enrages some, and invokes the wrath of his Uncle Ralph, determined to prove himself right in bemoaning the shortcomings of his nephew.One point of interest in this novel for me is the major revelation that comes toward the end involving the character of Smike. Throughout the novel he is loveable, pitiable, and utterly realistic, and his significance to the life of Nicholas, as revealed in the final chapters, is a true plot twist, and a charming, if not bittersweet, realization.For anyone forced to read Dickens early in life, if you appreciate quality satire and an engaging look at the London society of more than 125 years ago, visit this novel sometime, it is one of Dicken's finest.

About the Author Originally born in Detroit, MI, Bri moved to Ann Arbor, MI with her family when she was 11. In high school she was introduced to the world of urban fiction when she read "The Coldest Winter Ever" and was hooked! She started writing her own short stories and novels soon after. After she graduated Huron High School in 05, she attended Central State University and from there went on to graduate with an Associate's Degree from Washtenaw Community College. After leaving WCC, she attended Eastern Michigan University where she majored in Theatre Arts. After taking a screenwriting class and falling in love with a new form or writing, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in screenwriting. Being and a new city with a refreshed state of mind, sparked a few ideas that led to a full fledged novel. After reading a novel by Jessica Watkins called Secrets of a Side Bitch, she was inspired to submit what she was working on and the rest is history!

Nakami is still crazy and after introduction of a certain character I see where she gets it from. Nakami is ruthless and she is still dwelling on something that never happen, but did she really pull that trigger on ole girl....I can't deal. I knew Blaze had more to her, but that was a lot to deal with. Glad to see Kimani is back in love..Awwww. Grey and Blaze..say it isn't so???This story line is just simply amazing, heck it's intense. There are so many shocking reveals that you definitely can't put it down. This story took me through it and some points I just had to pause to say "Did she really do that." The book will leave you wanting more. As there is so much more to discover luckily there is a part 3.

The battle between Christianity and atheism By Guillaume As a Catholic I had heard of this little story for years, but only got around to buying it last night. I read it in one sitting. This is a story of two Scots -- one a staunch Roman Catholic, the other a militant atheist. The Catholic is enraged by the blasphemous display in the latter's shop windows and an vicious row ensues. They are both hauled away by the police. But it does not stop there. They agree to fight a duel. But where? Each time they think they have found a perfect spot, they are interrupted. Eventually, after some further adventures, they realise that they -- the one who actively accepts the existence of God and the other who actively denies it -- have more in common with each other than with the mass of self-satisfied humanity who could not care less if He exists or not. This is a brilliant story, and a perfect allegory of our sad times.

94 of 98 people found the following review helpful. Faster, Higher, Cooler By Gord Wilson So many people wrote great reviews of GKC's best-known books here that I'll concentrate on this one. It happens to be my favorite novel by him, but I was quite surprised that this nearly unknown book would be so good. My suggestion is don't read Martin Gardner's foreword first--read it as a backword, after the book, and then see if you agree.I am editing this review because Amazon won't let me review the book again. The Martin Gardner introduction is in the Dover edition The Ball and the Cross. There is a new, 2015 illustrated edition from Chesterton Press which is slightly abridged (very slightly from what I can tell), and has black and white full page illustrations by Ben Hatke in each chapter, along with little Chesterton-like sketches at the ends of the chapters. It's a 9 X 6 inch paperback with larger print and more white space. The blurb on the back cover calls The Ball and the Cross a 1909 "Steampunk novel", which is the same sense I had when I read it (and recently reread it). The Ball and the Cross. It's frankly dazzling. If you plan to read the physical book, these are the two editions I would recommend.Chesterton later wrote a little poem about how he didn't like this book, and how it didn't make any sense, but I found it to be the clearest thing I've ever read, and it has forever instilled lucid pictures in my brain. It starts with a scene that seems to be some sort of dizzying science-fiction story from Victorian England--sort of like something Jules Verne would write if he suddenly became a better writer.That's not the only unforgettable visual image in this book, which is pieced together like so many cliff-hanger serials. Someone else will likely write about all the debates over points of view implicit in the title and fiercely held by the characters, but what attracts me is the excitement of a wildly heroic life (which both characters live). GK shows, of course, that it's found in the romance of orthodoxy, but by the time the book winds up, he has me panting like a thirsty hart to find those cooling streams.Another novel that does this is Manalive!, which a friend of mine said is her second favorite book, next to C.S.Lewis' Perelandra. Manalive! is very light, but it just flies, and opens with the most intriguing first page I've ever read. Both these stories, although written in different ways, seem modern or even post-modern. They seem like they were translated into modern English from another language, even though they both date from the early 20th Century.Recently, I had the chance to see the world premiere of a play of The Man Who Was Thursday, which put these three novels into perspective for me. Chesterton wrote at a time when anarchist dynamiters --the terrorists of their day--were causing havoc about London. Many social conditions were chaotic and in the world of ideas, things were up for grabs.Chesterton did not have an easy conversion, nor did he come by his views without a hard-won struggle. In this sense, he didn't arrive at the "right" answer by working a puzzle or stumbling on the secret to life, but like his story about a man who walked around the world, came back with a new perspective, able to see things in a new way for the first time. Although I did come to embrace his romantic orthodoxy, I don't think his big gift is in convincing us of the wisdom of the Creed, but rather in opening our eyes to the wonder around us.

GKC is a big fat Genius By Clark Massey Chesterton's hilarious story of how an adamant Catholic duels to the death with an ardent atheist is a worthy read. Chesterton systematically critiques popular delusions of educated thinking as the book unfolds. Chesterton's wit is second to none and if you liked Pilgrim's Regress by C.S. Lewis, you will love this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very interesting read By Bellamusica I would recommend this book to a wide range of age-groups - older and younger females in particular. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and I related to the area and the convent in which it is set as I have visited there often. It was an interesting social commentary on religeous life pre Vatican II, as well as an accurate depiction of a teenager's life in this era. I also liked Maureen McCarthy's sensitive insight to the emotional issues in this story. All in all, very enjoyable and highly recommended.

I live close to the Convent and have been in the gardens a few times, but now I really want to do a tour of it all.I found it very sad to think this happened in my life time. Thank goodness they don't take inpressionable young ladies in to the cloisters any more. I have recommended this engaging book to several of my friends.

Highly recommended to women of all ages By Amelia68 Based on her mother's own history as ward of the state at the Abbotsford Convent in Victoria, the author tells the story of three generations of women whose lives have been affected in different ways by the convent's historical past. Ellen, who at age four became a ward of the state living at the convent, after her father had her mother declared an unfit parent; Cecilia, Ellen's only daughter, who at age nineteen took her vows and joined the secluded order as Sister Anunciata; and 19-year-old Peach (or Perpetua), Cecilia's daughter adopted out at birth and as yet unaware of her heritage.With insight and sensitivity the author tackles the subjects of motherhood, religion and the changing role of women in our society, as well as the search for our origins and the legacies of past generations which shape our lives though we might not be aware of them. I really enjoyed reading this book, and the characters came alive for me. McCarthy is one of the few authors who manages to pull off switching characters and times between individual chapters, without distracting from the main storyline or confusing the reader. Whilst we hear from Peach in the first person, her mother's and grandmother's stories are narrated in the third person, and skip back and forth between 1916 and the present time - which slowly unveils their personal histories and fleshes out their characters as the reader learns more about them.Having visited several convents on our travels around Australia, I could picture the austere room Cecilia would have inhabited at the convent, as well as the isolation, the heat and a life totally removed from anything she would have known previously. Not a stranger to the Catholic religion (after spending my childhood in Europe), I was still somewhat shocked by the harsh boundaries imposed on the convent's young recruits and charges - as well as learning that a man had the power to have a child taken away from her mother without a proper trial and prove of neglect. Despite the messages contained in the story and its sometimes controversial themes, the author tells the story without judgment or righteousness, but creates an interesting contrast between the different life stories which stimulates the readers to make up his/her own mind. Though some of the later elements of the story where predictable, I savoured every opportunity to learn more about its protagonists, hoping for all the threads to come together in the end.Tackling issues affecting every woman at some stage of her life, this book will appeal to women of all ages - even if only to muse how conditions have changed for our gender in the last century. The Convent also provides a fascinating insight into a chapter of Australian history not often addressed in fiction - of convent life in rural Australia. An insightful, thought provoking and enjoyable read - highly recommended.

About the Author G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. His prolific and diverse output included journalism, philosophy, poetry, biography, Christian apologetics, fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton has been called the "prince of paradox". Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories-first carefully turning them inside out."For example, Chesterton wrote the following: Thieves respect property. They merely wish the property to become their property that they may more perfectly respect it. Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both liberalism and conservatism, saying: The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position with Catholicism more and more, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius".

Chesterton is well known as a novelist, essayist, storyteller, poet, philosopher, theologian, historian, artist, and critic. He's less well-known as a journalist these days, yet all evidence indicates that he viewed his work for the various newspapers as his primary raison-de-etre. Therefore anyone interested in exploring the works of this colossal genius should include a sampling of his newspaper columns along with all of his other brilliant books."All Things Considered" brings together about thirty columns that Chesterton wrote for the London Daily News in the years before World War I. There's no theme here; as the title suggests, this is a hodgepodge that wanders over everything imaginable. The only unifying thread is high quality.Chesterton writes about politics. In an essay on canvassing, he ponders some unusual double standards. We mere mortals cannot even offer our fellow citizens food for their vote. Politicians, on the other hand, can allow bribes to run into the stratosphere. We also can't threaten each other. The MPs, however, can threaten the downfall of civilization. Lukring behind this apparent hypocricy is the apparent lunacy of expecting the power-hungry to be the most moral voluntarily, even as the crack down on the rest of us.Chesterton writes about daily annoyances. While on vacation, he learns that his beloved home at Battersea has been flooded. Far from despairing, he sees it as a chance to look at that home in a new light. Could it be that our daily lives have grown so boring and monotonous that we barely see the things around us at all? Maybe a forced change of scenery is the only thing that can make us look at daily life anew.Chesterton writes about literature. He ponders a copy of The Eatansville Gazette, a newspaper that's supposed to exist only within the fictional world of Dickens' "Pickwick Papers". Moreover, the imaginary rag was a vile and repulsive publication; why would anyone want to drag it into reality? It seems that two distinct towns are vying to be recognized as the model for Eatansville. In doing so, Chesterton notes, they are trivializing the meaning of the book.There's lots more considered in "All Things Considered". But while every essay here is amusing and almost everyone is a masterpiece, the selections in this book are by no means higher quality that average for Chesterton's career. Pondering that fact, you may well decide that you have to track down all 4,000 of Chesterton's newspaper columns the minute you finish this little selection.

By Christine Richardson I bought this with out looking at the reviews (generally they liked the book and did not like the edition), anyway, I wanted to report back that somehow this has been fixed, as this edition is perfect in every way! Fell good to get it, and read GK's views on everything, as he considers 'all things'. Ok, I'm not witty, but I know a good book when I read it! This is it!

Chesterton was a genius, but do NOT buy this edition By A Seeker If a publisher is going to reprint a work in the public domain, that publisher can at least go to the trouble of typsetting the book in a readable font, with a readable line width. This edition is simply unreadable, and I am returning it forthwith. The 5-stars is for anyone unfamiliar with these essays, which are exquisitely, vintage Chesterton at his best.
