Widdowson Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, best remembered as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, produced an excellent historical drama with The Refugee, a story about the Huguenots. Although Doyle wasn't a Christian, he writes with a great deal of sympathy as he describes the plight of French Protestants in the late 17th century. The courage and resolution of the Hugenots was legendary as the majority went into exile rather than recant their evangelical faith in Christ. Consequently, they lost family, friends, property, and employment. It's a cruel chapter in France's history. The novel begins in France but finishes in Canada. Along the way we visit the inner sanctum of King Louis' palace, travel through the ice-berg infested waters of the north Atlantic sea, and journey in the wilderness of New France.Doyle also wrote The Tragedy of the Korosko,: And the Green Flag, and Other Stories of War and Sport,

This book is quite lengthy for a Conan Doyle novel. The thread throughout the novel is the experiences, adventures, travels, joys, trials and tribulations of a family of three Huguenots (father, daughter, nephew) and their American friend, first in 17th century France, and then in the French owned provinces of Canada on the American frontier. The first two-thirds of the book is set primarily in the Versailles court of Louie XIV where the Huguenot nephew is a fast-rising, well-respected young captain in the king's guards, and in Paris in the home of the Huguenot father, a wealthy cloth merchant, and his daughter, who is in love with her cousin. The author has clearly done much research and provides many historically accurate details of court life and intrigues, while keeping the story fast moving and interesting even for those of us ignorant of this era and setting. The first part of the book ends with Louie's revocation of the Edict of Nance, which had assured French Huguenots of political and religious freedom. The second part of the book takes place primarily on the French Canadian frontier, with the three Huguenots in the company of their American friend having fled France barely ahead of French military authorities. Their initial destination was the English colonies, specifically Boston and New York, but because of a misadventure in the crossing, they are briefly stranded on an iceberg and picked up by a French ship transporting the new governor to Canada. From Quebec the refugees travel southward by river and land through a frontier filled with warring Iroquois and followed by an obsessive Franciscan priest who is determined to have the Huguenot daughter and nephew (now husband and wife) returned to France, the elderly Huguenot father/uncle having died soon after arriving in Canada. The travel south is full of frontier adventures more dangerous even than those at Versailles' court. The story ends a bit abruptly for my taste, but the author includes interesting and informative historical after-notes that bring the whole to a satisfying conclusion. I am tempted to give this novel a 5-star rating. It certainly is a very, very high 4-star.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Down for who By Queena It's funny how quickly the tables turn. Jewel's dad is awesome. She is lucky to have him. Didn't like Parker in book one, but she all right with now. Angel is a miserable miserable woman. Jason is cool as heck! Since everybody's world has been shook this book was everybody dusting themselves off, licking their wounds and regrouping, kinda slow, but still good. My nerves ain't as bad as they were after book one because I think I know what happening. Kellz I need book three before Christmas please!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I'm hoping Jewels had a plan! By tani8604 Jewels sure had a lot of redeeming to do. It was crazy how much she had to go through before she realized she had made a mistake. Kadris was showing out knowing there wasn't anything he could do for Kadrick. The pain he felt was evident in how he talked to both Kendrick and Jewels. Here I thought Parker was just some love sick ex, but the love she had for Kadrick was real. Angel needed a life and the more she showed up the more she pissed me off. She needed to stay out of her kids business and allow them to live their life. Unique was just grimy and her only concern was herself. I couldn't feel bad for her because she deserved everything that came her way. I could only shake my head at Legacy and Saga. Saga really needs to stop talking sometimes. I can't wait to find out the role Pablo has been playing all these years because after the ending I know he isn't who he claims to be. Hopefully things will work out for Jewels and the one she was down for doesn't complicate things.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ....Please hurry with the next By Tarra Please hurry with part 3.......the ending has me on edge right now. DAMN.....I thought Unique and Jewels were alright but they turned out to be snakes, especially Unique. I feel for Jewels because she truly loves Kadris. This is one rollercoaster ride I can't wait to see play out. The writing is as usual amazing, you ladies really put this together well. I know Angel's no good self is up to something n I know Pablo has something to do with it. I'm going to wait patiently for next part but please hurry with it.

I brought this book as kind of a guilty pleasure, and I could not put it down all night. Mia is a really believable character, and I love that she has issues and emotions. She's so real, she was always saying exactly what I was thinking. I liked that she had a personality, and wasn't too boring or naive like most of these romance books. Mia had great chemistry with Jared, I loved all the drama and tension in their relationship. I actually cared about them as a couple. I was so nervous when *it* happened. (No spoilers!)You're going to love the epilogue, too. It was the perfect ending.

When i first started to read i didnt think it would have that kind of kink but it was great. This a great book it love, friendship, insecurities, self doubt, love it was a great read. I really enjoyed this book the middle of it however got a little distracting because i felt like she would have ended up falling for the next hottie but i didnt happen. Because Jared was the love of her life

Reading this Over & Over By Amazon Customer Great from beginning to end, the only thing that would have blown the story over the top, making love after you read it. Yes, it was that good, and yes, I went there. Jared took Mia through some stuff, I know a lot of black women would not have taken that from him, they would have kicked him so far to the curb he wouldn't have found his way out. But, this still was a awesome read. This is one I know I will be reading again and again.Ztoria

“A taut, suspenseful psychological journey from which there is no escape. The 6:41 to Paris shatters any illusions that acts of cruelty committed in our youth are of little consequence later in life. A gripping yarn for our time.”—Kati Marton, author of Paris: A Love Story

“Clever and gripping, The 6:41 to Paris offers an intimate look at what happens when, during a fateful meeting, two old flames are unexpectedly forced to face their lives and the choices they’ve made in the past. Through his masterful use of a dual narrative, Blondel takes the reader on an intense emotional journey, and, as the train rumbles down the tracks, the suspense builds. Unputdownable.”—Samantha Vérant, author of Seven Letters from Paris: A Memoir

"A terrific read. Jean-Philippe Blondel writes masterfully about the astonishing private realm, with two alternating monologues that echo one another."—L'Express

"A fine book, in wonderfully precise and sensitive language, unpretentious and full of small truths."—Die Presse

"Funny, wise and conciliatory."—Stern

Cécile, a stylish forty-seven-year-old, has spent the weekend visiting her parents in a provincial town southeast of Paris. By early Monday morning, she's exhausted. These trips back home are always stressful and she settles into a train compartment with an empty seat beside her. But it's soon occupied by a man she instantly recognizes: Philippe Leduc, with whom she had a passionate affair that ended in her brutal humiliation thirty years ago. In the fraught hour and a half that ensues, their express train hurtles towards the French capital. Cécile and Philippe undertake their own face to face journey—In silence? What could they possibly say to one another?—with the reader gaining entrée to the most private of thoughts. This is a psychological thriller about past romance, with all its pain and promise.

Jean-Philippe Blondel was born in 1964 in Troyes, France where he lives as an author and English teacher. His novel The 6:41 to Paris has been a bestseller in both France and Germany.

By Eli This is a fabulous novel, moving as quickly as the train the characters are riding, yet containing great insight into the human psyche. For anybody who's ever loved, ever lost, ever done something they regret forever in a relationship, this is a wonderful novel. By the end of the book, Blondel does a great job of showing you all sides of the character. It's difficult to make judgments, the more you know somebody, and that's what this author does - he lets us get to know the man and woman at the center of the novel, allows us to see them in all their faults and glories, too. A great book - this will be on my Xmas gift list for the many readers in my life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Charming French Book By Melissa Beck Cécile is a stylish and confident forty-seven year old entrepreneur who owns a successful cosmetics company, has been married for twenty years and has a teenage daughter. When the book opens, she has just visited her elderly parents for the weekend and is about to take the 6:41 a.m. train back to her home in Paris. As her parents age, her weekend visits to their home are becoming harder for her and more depressing. The only thing that Cécile wants to do on the train is to relax and have a few hours of peace and quiet. But when she realizes who sits down next to her on the train, her commute back home is anything but restful.Philippe Leduc is also forty-seven but time has not been as kind to his physique as it has to Cécile. Philippe is divorced and his teenage children pretty much want nothing to do with him and he has a monotonous job selling televisions in a big box chain store. He is also on the 6:41 a.m. train to Paris but for a very different reason than Cécile. Philippe’s childhood friend is dying of cancer and Philippe is on his way to the hospital in Paris to say his final goodbyes. Philippe also assumes that his train ride will be quiet, until he realize that the only seat left on the train is the one next to his ex-girlfriend, Cécile.Philippe and Cécile had a four month relationship when they were in their early twenties. They were both very different people at the time: Philippe was the most popular boy in school, handsome, and very popular; Cécile was plain looking, shy and did not have many friends. They immediately recognize one another on the train, but neither one of them has the courage to speak up and acknowledge one other’s presence. They each sit in silence and contemplate the disaster that was their short-lived romantic relationship that ended more than twenty years ago. While they were dating, the relationship, for the most part, seemed fine but Cécile always had the feeling that Philippe was better than her and that he would inevitably dump her for someone better. They go on a trip to London together which ends up being an awful memory for both of them because it is on this very trip that Philippe decides to end the relationship in the worst possible way. What is interesting about the end of their affair is the effect it has on each of them. Cécile decides she will never again be made to feel inferior and will not be treated so badly by anyone. Philippe, on the other hand, knows that he has behaved in a very mean and churlish way towards Cécile and this eats away as his pride and confidence. He is never able to recover from the guilt of this bad breakup and never has a successful relationship after his time with Cécile. The ending to this book is very interesting as the author builds up to the conclusion. We are left wondering if Cécile and Philippe will ever speak with each other; and if they do have a conversation will it be amicable? New Vessel Press has provided us with another entertaining translation of a charming French book.

It’s a really short book at only 170 pages, but it’s impact on you will be huge.Imagine being seated on a train with a ride of one and a half hours in front of you. Suddenly someone sits down in the empty seat beside you. Of course you look at the person. Now imagine that person is someone who you knew thirty years ago. A person you had an affair with. A person who hurt you badly and embarrassed you terribly. What would go through your mind? What would go through his? This is the situation that Cecile and Philippe find themselves in. In this book you’ll read the thoughts and conversations of Cecile and Philippe, told in alternate chapters.I loved getting into the heads of Cecile and Philippe. I can’t imagine being in that situation. I would just not say anything and pretend to sleep :)This is a book unlike any I’ve ever read, and it is well worth the time it takes to read it. I would definitely recommend this book.

None of the damn answers got answered. So they found ol girl Jamerica but for what? And what was the point of introducing Sunja into the book at all? They some hood men, but they jumping out of planes wading through swamps and forests. Nothing got resolved. Damar was suppose to be so smart and witty but he got jacked ore times than I can remember in this series. Im just not impressed. I gave this book an "okay" because I read all three and I figured I would be nice about it. But quite frankly Im irritated with this series. The most interesting point to the story was the beef between Fresh and Damar. I could see someone doing some petty s*** like that over a female, but other than that I was utterly disappointed.

The Rabbi Who Knew Too Much is the story of Jonathan Jacob Kadison, a young man from Minneapolis who is inspired by the Six-Day War to settle on a border kibbutz in Israel. As the kibbutz comes under fire from the other side of the Jordan, Jonathan spends his days helping build the community's defenses. But when idealism leads to disillusionment, he leaves the Holy Land for the Golden State to go into the ''family business'' and become a rabbi--a tradition that spans thirteen generations.

Soon he is called to a pulpit in New Zealand, where he stumbles over some covert information that Israel's Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations--the Mossad--will do anything to keep hidden.

Travel the world with JJ Kadison from the Midwest to the Middle East, then to California, the South Pacific, Dubai, and Singapore in this fictional memoir that goes behind the scenes of some recent real-world events and provides a rabbi's-eye view on ethnicity, patriotism, vengeance, and justice.

IMHO possibly would have been better written as a straight autobiography By Norniedel I'm not a big reader of fiction, and I took a while to get used to the style of this 'biographical novel'. IMHO possibly would have been better written as a straight autobiography. Interesting look at life on the kibbutz in 1960s-70s Israel. As far as the story goes, I felt there was too much detail and too many dates, which, for me, disturbed the flow of the narrative.Otherwise a good read and a colourful tale.

Mossad Covert Actions By Jill Bemis This fiction account of Rabbi Kadison slows down significantly as chronological events starting in 1967 and ending in 2007 hint at but do not capture the urgency, thrill or mystic of the opening event. Readers who enjoy international espionage will appreciate the way author Kopstein include real location and events in the story.

It has been four years since Eli made the biggest mistake of his life – and it’s about to come back to bite him in his ass. Eliodoro “Eli” D’Amato has finally found happiness: his marriage to Faith is stronger than before, they’ve expanded their family, and Madre’s is doing better than ever thanks to a very popular reality show featuring three of the brothers. But when a blast from Eli’s past comes back – with an unforgettable gift – will he once again be tempted by what could’ve been? When Eli decided to work on his marriage, Simone Harris couldn’t get out of New York fast enough. The only problem is she has a constant reminder of what she wanted with Eli – her daughter, Elena. When Elena keeps inquiring about her father, Simone is put in a precarious position – to reach out to Eli or forever burn his memory. A return trip to New York will prove to be disastrous – and a blessing in disguise. Faith D’Amato is a forgiving Christian woman who doesn’t believe in divorce. Years of therapy plus two additional children have made her marriage to Eli solid. But when Simone reappears in town with a daughter claiming to be Eli’s, Faith finds her belief system severely tested – and she’s not sure if she can weather this storm. Love… is a sequel to Where I Wanna Be and the fifth book in the D’Amato Brothers series. A sensual/erotic book deals with forgiveness, trust, commitment, and revenge.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. WOW!!!!! IT'S ABOUT TO BE A MESS! By Nirah I never liked Simone and this book doesn't help her character at all. Everything about her is wrong. I never liked Darren either. There is something about him that just doesn't feel right. I'm proud of Eli for being able to not only admit his part but still be true to his convictions. No more just taking what Faith dished out. He manned up with her and it was great to see. Faith needed a kick in the butt to see that she played just as much a part in her marriage!s decline Eli did. Without giving anything away, Simone and Darren have no idea what they are about to unleash with this family. Ms. Roberts you did a wonderful job with this book. I can not wait for the conclusion. Also, thank you for a bit of Scott and Mari. Can't wait to read the finished product of that story as well.

I love the rich character development. I am rooting for Eli & Faith. I don't blame Faith for what happen this go around as I feel I would do the same but I'm glad she had a come to Jesus moment and actually got through this a stronger and better person. I still can't stand coconut. Can't wait for the war book! Love the visit from Scott & M and hints regarding Tony & Krista. (They need a book asap)
