Beyond the city, by Arthur Conan Doyle

About the Author The creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous literary detective. Born in Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a practising doctor when he began to write tales of mystery and adventure. In addition to the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle also wrote the Professor Challenger adventures, and his classic, The Lost World, is one of the original fantasy novels. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School. Graduating in 1881, he set up practice as an occultist, but as patients proved elusive he turned to writing. An important influence upon his literary career was his professor, Dr Joseph Bell, who could observe the most minute detail regarding a patient's condition. This master of deduction became the model for Conan Doyle's legendary literary creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, introduced in 'A Study in Scarlet' in 1887. Conan Doyle also espoused spiritualism and devoted considerable time and effort to a campaign of support for this cause. He also wrote successfully in genres other than detective fiction. His non-fiction includes military writing on the Boer War and pamphlets on spiritualism. It is known that he felt constricted at times by the popularity of Holmes, but it is nevertheless for Sherlock Holmes and his foil, the ponderous Dr Watson that he is best remembered. As Sherlock Holmes was the first detective to solve cases by deduction rather than due to an error by the criminal, Conan Doyle can be credited with creating the modern detective novel. He was knighted in 1902 for his support of the British cause in the Boer Wars. After the death of his son in the First World War, he devoted the rest of his life to spiritualism on which he wrote and lectured.

Ebeling This 1893 novella from the creator of Sherlock Holmes is a reminder that Arthur Conan Doyle was a productive writer across many decades, who worked in genres other than detective fiction. This is a lightweight social comedy, easily read in a couple of hours. It really does not have quite enough going for it to attain classic status--Diary of a Nobody by the Grossmith brothers runs circles around it in wit, invention, style and what it divulges about Late Victorian middle class suburban society. This is the story of four families that live in a new subdivision of the McMansion counterpart of suburban London in the 1890s. There are the elderly spinster sisters, stalwarts of Victorian manners, out of whose family land the subdivision was created; a widower doctor and his two marriageable daughters; a recently retired naval admiral, his wife and adult son; and another young man and his aunt, an attractive woman of a certain age, who stridently advocates suffrage, who is an adventurer and popular lecturer. There ensues some couplings--the daughters and the son and nephew and the doctor and the aunt, but then there are the necessary complications to true love. Two of the three couplings will survive, but all end up happy. The sisters provide amusing perspective of the goings on. Masterpiece Classic could take this and with the right cast and stylish approach make a winsome production. This edition is print on demand. The cover is thick, glossy photo stock, the back cover has a minimal description, and the interior is laid out competently (not all PODs are, believe me) but is minimal, with no critical introduction to put this in context.

Otherwise, I never would have bought this book. Actually, I never even heard of it. The freeness made it very appealing. It is about a suburb of London where three families converge. The three have a variety of problems that only seem to happen in Victorian England--bad brother who scams family members for money and then does a physical attack for revenge, the 'new' game of tennis, the launch of women's rights, and other issues that is so "England".It was a cute and short story but not one I would ever want to pay for! If you're reading the classics, stick with other English authors and if you want Doyle, then stick with his Holmes stories. Cute, but that's about it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Doyle's Best Work By Grampy As a rule, I tend to like everything I've ever read of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings. I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, but a lot of what Doyle wrote was superior to the Sherlock stories. Beyond the City was okay - I did like it, but it wasn't one of his better pieces.

The Old Testament story of Mephibosheth, the grandson of King Saul, who is summoned to the palace of the new king, David. What does David want with him in Jerusalem? Perhaps he is being summoned to his death as a potential rival to the throne. And what part does King Saul's former servant play in all this? Prince Jonathan, the young man's father, and king David's best friend had died in battle many years before, the same day that the young man became crippled in both legs. Living in a place of great poverty, perhaps God was about to bless the young man far beyond his wildest dreams. Author Charles Millson brings the reader into this intriguing and exciting Bible story, as Mephibosheth witnesses King David at the height of his power and as he meets the woman who would change his life forever, Bathsheba. Palace intrigue, murders, revenge, but most of all, the blessings and mercy of God are all found in these pages. And the story poses the question: Could this young man be the inspiration for one of the scripture's most beloved passages, Psalm 23? Included in the book are maps, a timeline, a genealogy, and a description of each main character, as well as the author's notes on the background of the story.

Fantastic Read By Constance Parrish This story captured me from the start and put me in the midst of events that transpired in the time of King David. It made that period of history so real to me. True, the details of Mephibosheth’s life were fictional, but everything happening around him is documented in the Bible. Charles Millson has put so much love and good, hard work into the writing of this novel. The maps and other explanatory notes on the characters and time period are very helpful. I learned a lot in the reading of this book, and look forward to reading more from this very talented author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By MsB Charles Millson does an incredible job of putting together stories from the Bible and giving those stories new insights and meaning. His knowledge of the "official records" allows him to tell the story in a refreshing way that helps today's readers understand and learn from the trials and joys of the Old Testament heroes and villains. The story is fast-paced but also filled with details that add depth to the characters. It is predictable for those who know the story but still filled with new insights as to why those characters might have acted as they did. A great read!

It makes you feel through Mephibosheth that you are sitting at David's table, in the throne room with David, and in conversations with Bathsheba. One of my best reads yet.

The only thing I didn't like was how hard it was to decipher who was speaking and thinking what. The shift in the character change with no indication was a but annoying. Few grammatical errors but I've seen worse. Overall, a drama filled page turner.......Chance's character confused me somewhat from time to time.Especially when he spoke saying "nah" instead of "no". Just didn't seem he would speak like that from the description of his character.

George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was a Nobel-Prize and Oscar-winning Irish playwright, critic and socialist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics stretched from the 1880s to his death in 1950. Originally earning his way as an influential London music and theatre critic, Shaw's greatest gift was for the modern drama. Strongly influenced by Henrik Ibsen, he successfully introduced a new realism into English-language drama. He wrote more than 60 plays, among them Man and Superman, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Saint Joan, Caesar and Cleopatra, and Pygmalion. With his range from biting contemporary satire to historical allegory, Shaw became the leading comedy dramatist of his generation and one of the most important playwrights in the English language since the 17th century.

37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. A True Gem of World Theatre By Gary F. Taylor Like many writers at the turn of the 20th Century, Shaw was very much interested in "the woman question," for women were becoming increasingly independent and more of a challenge to men in both public and private spheres. Although he also addressed these issues in such other plays as PYGMALION and MAN AND SUPERMAN, CANDIDA is perhaps his clearest statement on the subject. Written in 1894, it is a statement that has proven timeless. It is easily among the favorite performance pieces of world theatre. The plot is quite simple. The Rev. Morrell is a minister with a taste for reform--and he has had the good fortune to marry the perfect wife, a remarkable woman named Candida who has a talent for smoothing every path she encounters. One of the paths to which she has turned that talent is that of Marchbanks, a poetic young man who is the grip of all the emotional turmoil delayed adolescence implies. But Marchbanks has fallen in love with Candida, and when he informs her husband of this all hell breaks loose.Throughout much of the play Morrell and Marchbanks engage in a series of brilliantly written duels over Candida, each of them espousing what Candida means to them and what they can give her, arguing through numerous philosophical issues in the process. But neither gentleman has actually troubled to consult Candida herself; when they eventually lay the issue before her and insist that she decide between them, she responds in a way that not only demonstrates how little they know of her, but how little they know about both women and the world in general. The climax of the play has been dropping jaws in theatres for well over a hundred years and it seems likely that it will do so for at least a hundred more--and although Shaw presents his play as a comedy, it will be the rare husband who leaves it without a quick glance at his wife and the disturbed thought that like Candida, she may not be entirely what he has always believed her to be. Brilliantly written and reading as well on the page as it plays on the stage, CANDIDA is easily among the great plays of this or any other era; a personal favorite and very strongly recommended.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Amazing introduction By Sibylle Peter Gahan's introduction to G.B. Shaw's play Candida in the new Penguin Classics edition shows an old favorite play in a very new light. Not only does Gahan read between the lines of the plot, he also draws the reader's attention to on-stage props, names, and even off-stage happenings, which might otherwise easily go unnoticed. He makes some truly amazing connections with a multitude of other works of art, such as Yeats' poetry, pre-Raphelite paintings, and Wagnerian opera. This new edition of Candida is worth buying for its introduction alone.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A great play By Israel Drazin Comparing Shaw's Candida and Voltaire's Candide adds a dimension of understanding to both. Voltaire's Candide focuses on the enlightenment of a very naïve young boy who is influenced by his teacher, the philosopher Pangloss, who teaches him that this is "the best of all possible worlds" and therefore everything in it and everything that happens is not only good but the best that could possibly be. Voltaire was pocking fun at the philosopher Leibniz who taught this notion. Leibniz argued that God is good and all that he creates must of necessity be good. Voltaire shows that this is a ridiculous notion - according to this view, why save a man who is drowning since his death is "obviously" the best thing there is. The boy comes to understand that philosophy/thinking is not good; one should instead live life to the fullest. Shaw's Candida focuses on a woman and what women want from men. However, the comedy in three acts also contains a very naïve young boy and it too enlightens men who have a wrong concept. The eighteen-year-old boy falls in love with the wife of an approximately forty-year-old pastor. She is fifteen years older than the boy. Both the pastor and the boy argue about who Candida should live with. Both want to give her the best of all possible worlds. Both ask Candida to decide between them. But, as in the Voltaire tale, Candida is not interested in the best of all possible worlds. She makes her choice based on an entirely different desire.

Alonzo Fitz and other stories, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Keeping his Baby was a fun read By Kennycool Brody was really funny for being Canadian, but still convincingly hot. Jessica was fun, because her character opened you up to the whole world of RnB singers. Their lives can be filled with hurt and pain. Brody takes away that pain. He's funny and pleasant. And from moment they meet, Jessica finds herself in the most sexy scenario. Anyway, no more spoilers. This was more than just your average 'run of the mill' BWWM romances. I definitely recommend it.
